Scoliosis in Teen
SonshineLearner replied to SonshineLearner's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Hey Ellie :) So I haven't had the x-ray read by anyone besides our chiro. We had him look and he measured it with his computer program... It doesn't look like chiro would be covered by our insurance. (It would cost around $2500 for the 2x weekly adjustments... give or take a few hundred dollars) BUT, my friend mentioned that Osteopathic Drs are usually covered.... I've looked at Osteopathic Drs and can't figure out the difference between Osteopathic and Chiropractic care. We've gone to the Chiro for years..... but for this.. the chunk of $$$ is a lot me :( -

Hi There... Just wanting to ask and see if others have experience with scoliosis. My daughter, 14 in August, has been diagnosed with scoliosis. She has a 24% curve but I don't know what part of her spine. (lower part somewhere) She still has <some> growth to do but I'm not sure how much. We're seeing a specialist in a week and a half. In between I'm just freaking a bit... Our chiro has said he's worked with it, but I'm looking at a <pediatric> Osteopathic Dr. I haven't found one yet. We have an appt with Doernbecher's Hospital... so I'm set.. but just looking for who might be closer if I have to go 2x a week for adjustments and such... (and of course I'd like to get at least 2 professional thoughts on treatment plans) <Freak> my poor baby... wish I had found out a couple of years ago!! :(

I would beg out of the plans. I'd just say, "Gosh, I was thinking about the fact that my daughter will find out about the party and be devastated, and I decided it'd be best for her to go to the coast (or whatever is near you) instead of the last meeting." I hope you understand :) I'd choose to make other plans, because well.... my kids would be extremely hurt, and it wouldn't profit their long term health to be there with the others talking about a party that she isn't invited to.. Alternately, if you're brave you could say, "I didn't receive the invitation to the party, friend, so I didn't know if you gave it to my daughter and she lost it... or if it got lost in the mail"... (then you have to be silent..... and let your friend think of her answer) Good Luck!!

Reasons for Our Hope: An Introduction to Christian Apologetics I haven't often actually finished a book my dad has written, after all, I have him around :) But, I'm planning to finish this one... ;) I started it yesterday, when we had no internet. Funny how much time you have when there's no tv, netflix, WTM threads...etc... :) -

Yup... Sears is a great book for crunchy ;) It's not all the way, but pretty darn close. I think that for the important issues, he's spot on ;) -
5 yr old can spell a word, but struggles to read it
SonshineLearner replied to Mommie_Jen's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My son went around spelling simple words after sounding them out around 6... He started reading fine at 8. I didn't do more than just review phonics.... I made him start reading a bit at 7... but really this year is the first year I hear him and think, "He reads well." :) -
Need advice- work changing homeschool plans

Honestly, I'd let my sis decide. You don't want it to be too hard for her. I'd tell her that you're pretty relaxed about what he learns there, but/and you want it to be the easiest for her. Ask what she thinks :) You have years and years to tweak things... and you really do want it to be low stress for her and you :) -

I'm gonna be probably not the first to tell you... that is SUCH a simple name to spell. One of the only ones where people will absolutely assume that it's with a "c"... you're giving a great name, that will be a pain in the tush to always remind people about spelling. My daughter's name is "Caley" and while it's not spelled the same way much.... people always assume that it starts with a "K" so they start it off waiting for the rest... and of course.... she has to restart them. She hates it :( Just letting you know what a pain for them it will be. So... just a thought....

need help...complete curr. for HS??
SonshineLearner replied to Aura's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
If I wanted that, I would likely go with My Father's World. You would have 4 years of study, and it's "non-denominational" They do 4 days of work and you have a "review day" with mom for at least part of the 5th. I would then have them doing a Science and a Lab with a group. You also add Math.... :) -
I remember that it's hard to get work done in school. Heck, it's hard for me to finish up work around my house. I'd suggest talking about you keeping him on a short line this next year and letting go in small amounts. I like the way our PS does it. We get progress reports along the way. We can pull restrictions on our children if they're not keeping up. (Early bed, pull phones, FB... ) It's a hard process, but you want them able to be independent in College. This sets up how they will be able to keep on top of their work there, too. I also agree about getting him checked out... Does he have ADHD? Depression, Thyroid problems.... etc.
