  1. Wiener bean pot was good while we were camping. Little dinners in foil on the fire are good....And, my husband always makes these "pies" which the children love....(yuck for me...oh well) Anyway, white bread with butter on the outside...with fruit pie filling inside....I'm not sure what you'd use if you don't have a pie press. He has this press that you use....and hold over the fire. The pie is done when the outside is crispy looking. Carrie:-)
  2. It's fun, huh? My son started doing this, too....and it's a blast! (He's almost 6, now) I haven't had him do formal math, just oral and playing. He loves cuisaire rods and unifix cubes. He also likes skip counting..... Congrats...it's fun when the little ones like learning:-) Carrie:-)
  3. I don't have one for Coconut, but if she can have rice milk....I had some good rice milk icecream...so maybe that's a possibility. Also, if you do a search for "coconut" there was one person on here who I saw gave this to her child as a treat on Saturdays, I think? Maybe she makes it:-) Carrie
  4. Oh, I went and looked at it. I'm sure that there are many people who would need a refresher on it to pass. Carrie
  5. So what do most of you pay for...say...a chicken? Our local family that I purchase eggs from ($5 at the Farmer's Market...$4 if I pick up) ....sells chickens at about $15 a piece. I don't think I can afford this... We spend $16-$20 a month on milk(raw....$4 a gallon..I know...cheap!) $20-$30 on eggs....and if I have to spend $60 on chicken...(that's only one a week for a family of 6)....And, I really want to buy beef...still remember from getting it when I was younger.....(Not to mention that this way I get all of the organs for puppy....) Carrie
  6. Yes, The Ten Boom family was ordinary. The Dad was a watchmaker, I believe...Well..he worked with watches. The dad made a "faux" wall to hide some Jews. They helped...and spent time in concentration camps. I also saw on this board...that some of the countries did some resistance that was without weapons...and successful. Can't remember what the thread was called... This is actually a whole discussion about laws, the difference between legal and ethical...and the responsibility to protect individuals because of their rights as humans and not just because of the laws in place to protect them. Huge Discussion. And, what you think about laws...ethics...and humans...determines a huge part of how you view the world. What might be sad to study about history....molds how you think about the present. For an incredible read...try this book The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal. It's incredible because it poses this question. "You are a prisoner in a concentration camp. A dying Nazi asks for your forgiveness. What would you do??" (you..forgiving on behalf of all Jews...) It was an incredible read. (For adults/Highschoolers) Carrie
  7. With CC, I think we'll spend under $1500 for the year. About $1000 for CC (for two kids in Foundations and 1 in Essentials) and then some extras for us at home... Carrie:-) PS, private school would be way over $7000 a year for two...plus more gas...more time out...more...more..more... :-)
  8. Well, My first thought is some type of martial arts... Carrie:-)
  9. Corrie Ten Boom. There is her book The Hiding Place but also books about her. Her sister was Betsy, I believe. There are many books that are great about this time, when many fought for babies, children, and adults who could not fight for themselves. (sometimes with violence and sometimes with prayer and skill) There's also the info about Hitler being quite possibly "part Jewish" and I think that would make his history more interesting, if true. I have read a few books that are good for adults, but for children, The Hiding Place is as graphic as I would recommend. What I loved about it is how they trusted in God and talked about his mercy. Can you imagine????? Like the story when they really needed...I think it was vitamin E and they continued to have enough...until the next "smuggled" bottle arrived...and that very day...there was no vitamin(E) left! Or, the time when Corrie Ten Boom was telling her story at a church and how God forgives sinners. There was the man who came up and told him how much he appreciated her talk. He was one of the prison guards. He extended his hand (I think before Corrie Ten Boom) and she prayed/willed her hand up. Every bone in her body wanted to resist, and yet she was in control of her will to do what she considered right. The book I have about her is by Heroes of the Faith, although there are many others. Carrie:-)
  10. I voted, too:-) Makes me wanna check out the Humane Society page... I'm kinda wanting one other <small> dog. What's a little more hair?? Carrie:-)
  11. Hey There, I posted this on the networking, too, but I'd love to meet any of you who are coming to the conference/vendor Hall. I will be there for sure between 1-3pm on Friday.....Who else is coming???? (June 12&13)
  12. Their "vanity" knife...(It's like a spreader...but serrated knife) The other "must have" is their set of steak knifes...I use them ALL the time. Oh, and their kitchen scissors are great....(And so is their ice cream scoop!)
  13. Next year, when you have more time, we would be happy to do some sort of Klean Kanteen or this other water bottle that we sell....fundraiser. We have a fundraiser going for our local HS and I love it...I'd rather purchase water bottles...than say....teddy bear crackers...like me husband did...from the little girls next door:-) Carrie
  14. Hey There, We can have chickens here, no rooster, and I want 2 - 3 dozen eggs a week. I'm trying to figure out if that's possible. I have a outside dog kennel that I could make a coop out of....(somehow) and 2 small spots of grass for them to run around on....(so we could switch back and forth) How much room do you need to make your chickies happy? Can you tell me how much it costs to feed 1 chicken? (So I can figure out how much I would need to the chickens I get??) What kinds of chickens do you like best?? Any opinions on if this is harder than you thought?? I generally like my animals to be happy...and so I don't want to try to overcrowd them...the thing in it for me would be kinda having a little "chicken farm" and getting my fresh eggs. Thanks!
  15. I found them confusing, and my mom did enough to find some errors. I'd start with something more like either the Bludorn's or from Critical Thinking... Carrie:-) PS< I hear the Wilson's logic books are good, too, but don't know....
  16. I would just pick her up...say "kennel" or whatever....and stick her in the crate and lock the door. I'd leave her in there for a few minutes (15 or so??) and then let her out to play outside. (with you) and then do this a few times. At night, I'd pick her up and put her in. My current dog, I got at 1 1/2 years from a Humane Society about 4 hrs away. By the time we got home...it was 11pm. No time for gentle. I shoved him in (he wouldn't go) and said...good boy.... And went to bed. In the morning, I let him out....(Remember...don't get excited...unless you want them to pee all over) just casually let them out...and take them straight outside. After trying about 4 times or so...he goes straight in... The whole...don't get excited thing is really important....so that they can maintain control of their little bladders (when puppies:-) As an adult, I can let him out..and he can wait a couple of hours sometimes before he needs to go out.... Carrie:-)
  17. You need to call the crate something... I say "kennel" and my dog goes straight in. I also would not leave any cushy thing in the crate, because when they're little...they tend to chew it up...and if it gets ingested...you're in for a HUGE vet bill. Of course, they need to chew on something while being watched, I feed raw food...and so chewing isn't as much of an issue. (HE has to chew all his food...) Raw dogs bones that are doggy safe are great for getting the chewing out. (I think mine eats knuckly bones?? I just ask at the butcher's) The trainer that I had said....play hard (not to the extreme:-) and kennel...and if out....on a leash...so that accidents don't happen. Prevention is easier than fixing a problem. Carrie:-)
  18. I have NO idea what the custody terms are for Oklahoma. BUT, I love having sole custody of my daughter. Legally, I choose the school, religion, and medical care for her. For us, this comes in handy for vaccines, church and homeschooling. Yes, he can try to change those things...but he has to go to court. I would also have her think long-term. How will she enforce what's in the papers?? (usually court) But, she might have braces coming up....(should she get to pick...and he needs to pay what percentage??) And the courts will put things in about insurance (him maintaining) and such.... just go through each year of the child's life and see if there's something new in it. I'm really glad that my daughter's dad has to pay for all costs associated with her flying there....(and she has to go non-stop if there's a flight that does) Her mileage I keep for her future use.... I mean...it's a lot easier to think of now. I don't know how it would have ended up...had we gone to court....but I put in the papers...no one would smoke in her presence and she would be buckled in a booster until whatever the age is in our state...and that she wouldn't be left in charge of siblings or by herself until a certain age. At least I had him sign it..... I'm very lucky. My daughter goes to his state....3 times a year for about 12-14 days. PS, even though she doesn't think she'd homeschool, remember OK is very homeschool friendly right now... so she may want to take maintain that option... Carrie:-)
  19. We know someone who parked in their driveway, ran into the house to get something they forgot...and in that time got a fine. You were suppose to park only in the garage.... The rules of the homeowners assoc (this is in OR) .were just crazy! And, she's very much of a put together person....so I'm sure she really did just "run in the house".
