  1. Trig in cooking/baking: How to measure the angle of cake slices based on the length of 2 of the known sides. If you have to be precise, and don't have a lot of extra cake to work with. I don't know I'm just messing around. My dh was so excited to use trig when cutting tough angles while installing our new wood flooring. ;) I agree with a PP that the more math he can do, and understand well, the more options he'll have in future careers.
  2. My natural allergy med is to avoid the allergen and stay healthy in general. I've avoided taking most allergy meds just by removing carpeting from my home and staying away from the cat and other things I'm allergic to. When I do have a reaction, I go to Reactin. I need to know that I'm actually taking something that has enough active ingredients to do the job. And my Epi-pen is nearby. I wouldn't use homeopathy on my child. You can be a guinea pig for yourself, if you want. Allergies can kill people, you do realize, don't you?
  3. :iagree: I definitely pick activities that I love to do, and then I keep doing them year after year without feeling like it's a chore. Dh and I play tennis together, both doubles and singles. The dc and I ski, skate, snowshoe and cycle with me. I run by myself with I can't do more fun stuff (running is more of a chore for me). I walk the dog because I have to for his sake. It's not my favourite activity, but it does force me out off my chair and outside.
  4. Yup. That's our reality every winter. And the way our street bends and the plow drives, our driveway ends up being 6 - 10 feet longer after a couple snow dumps. We returned home to that massive "gift" from the plow. All the dc and I attacked it with shovels and overcame! I'm busting out the Baileys now. :p
  5. Skiing was epic today. It was snowing and blowing, but not too cold. It was hard going for the skate skiers because the base snow wasn't hard; similar to running on a beach. The banana bread was wonderful to keep up our spirits. The welcoming snow pile at the end of the driveway when we returned home was not so nice. We all pitched in (under threats of death) to remove it all. Pizza for dinner as a treat for all. :hurray:
  6. Do you actually have a bone density problem? Did you have a bone scan done? How are your calcium levels? Maybe you need Vit D and calcium. Ask for the best methods for the body to absorb the calcium. Body-weight baring activity is good for building bone density. So walking, running, jump rope, etc. Wear really good running shoes and don't go out too hard too soon. You want to gradually build up muscle and bone, not over-load your knee and ankle joints.
  7. Olga - Fencing is such a cool sport! I tried it for a couple weeks at the recreational level in university. I did NOT have the "killer drive" to score points. However, after 13 years of martial arts, I've developed a love of sparring, so I may try fencing again. It would be a lot easier on the body than Taekwon-Do, but still an amazing way to stay fit. Recommendations for recovering from tough plyometrics work-out: a cold or hot bath with a few magnesium salts sprinkled. Yes, the cold bath part sounds brutal, but it's very, very effective to reduce the initial pain from a work-out. You don't have to stay in the cold water long - just as long as your body can stand, and keep your shorts/tights on while in the bath. Then have a nice warm shower.
  8. I don't actually know how much gluten or grain content there is in various beers. Certainly there are calories. Go for it and enjoy your dark beer in this season of need. Maybe cut back slowly to 1/2 a bottle/glass a day, or a glass every second day. I'm in a season of needing maple syrup. It pops up this time of year when the sap is running and the body is feeling weak and weary from winter.
  9. You can't "spot remove" or target the removal of adipose tissue without surgical intervention (or whatever those lypo-suction and similar things do). Body fat comes off different places on different people in different order. For me, the thighs hold onto adipose tissue the longest. The good news is that fat there isn't as bad for your health as fat in the middle of your body. You can do some muscle building work in specific areas of the body. For overall muscle toning with low-impact on joints, I'd recommend cross-country skiing. It's amazing! You can be working upper, core and lower body muscle strength and endurance, aerobic conditioning, in a very efficient and effect way.
  10. The new symptoms sound like the flu, and dehydration. Possibly she got it when her immune system was weakened from the strep. It's definitely worth checking out with the dr, though.
  11. Wrong pronoun. It's better when the mom says, "They or he or she just shoveled the walkway/driveway." Mom can do a different, more fun work-out when she wants to.
  12. I'm avoiding shoveling until it stops snowing. Ours isn't that plentiful or heavy - it's too cold to be heavy. I am going to ski on the snow tomorrow, though. :hurray: Tonight I made up my own work-out routine of running, dancing, kicking and hopping around the main level of the house to the music from my ds's musical theatre prodution Suessical. I also tried to do a few Taekwon-Do patterns that I haven't done in over 4 years. I mixed up all the movements, but it was pretty fun. I'm glad I retired from the sport, though, as some of the kicks and jumping kicks are not good for 50 year old bodies (or at least MY body).
  13. It doesn't sound like much, but it was very yummy. BTW, the "nun's farts" don't translate directly into that in English. That's the French-Canadian name for the pastry (pete de soeur). I love the name, though.
  14. A traditional Greek salad doesn't have lettuce. Just red onion, sweet peppers, feta cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes and olives. Then add a simple dressing. I like lemon juice, olive oil, pepper, maybe a dash of balsamic vinegar.
  15. I don't know if it's officially a "salad," but cucumbers thinly sliced and served in white vinegar w/ a little water are really tasty. It's a very popular dish in Norway. Diced cucumbers and tomatoes with fresh dill
  16. I wouldn't want to move the piano more than I had to. Each time you move it will be expensive, and hard on the instrument.
  17. Yes, I do recall now there was some concern about my first bowel movement after surgery. It can be difficult because of the drugs/anesthesia and incision. The nurses always offered me prune juice and stool softeners.
  18. Do whatever exercises the physio-therapist tells you to do, and do them when they tell you to do them. You may want to baby yourself, which is normal, but do the exercises even if you don't want to. They do help in your recovery. Do NOT do the things your surgeon tells you to avoid, such as lifting, going up stairs, etc. Listen to your body, and rest before you get exhausted. Eat protein and other healthy foods.
  19. Probably NOT "charming" by your definition, but my brother and all our boy cousins loved the "South of the Border" fireworks stand in our family's one and only time in South Carolina.
  20. My ds 14 was an apprentice at a summer theatre company. He loved it. It kept him busy all summer, he got excellent experience (he did Front of House work), and he got a $300 honorarium at the completion as well as an excellent letter of reference.
  21. Had to have pie today. It was a delicious French-Canadian concoction of sugar, "Nun's farts" and pure lard (I should NOT have looked at the ingredients).
  22. Need I say more. They were playing Dutch Blitz. I think everyone but me ignored the speaker.
  23. - You don't have to introduce your children to every single sport or physical activity while they are in their youth. They can explore new sports and activities throughout their lifetime. - You don't have to start a sport at age 2 - 4 to become skilled. The drop-out rate of sports is huge at age 13. Many kids have "burned-out" by this time by too much too soon. - You don't have to spend thousands of dollars on sports. You can, if you have the money and you want to, but it's not necessary to enjoy sports physical activities. - You SHOULD ensure your children are physically active to promote good healthy in their youth, and increase the chances of them continuing to be physically active in adulthood. Being active for 30 minutes every day is a wonderful goal for everyone at every age.
  24. Did she sleep in her own sleeping bag at the camp? Did you look inside the bedding? Was there anything there that might explain things? Possibly a metal zipper on the bag that she was sleeping in? I would think that any plants or insects outdoors would be in hibernation this time of year.
  25. No way. This is not a big thing in our area. Yes, we're getting some snow, but it's a normal occurrence. I'm not exactly sure why it seems to come as such a huge shock to drivers, though. The morning commutes are always crazy with even just a skiff of snow on the ground. :confused1:
