  1. Way to go! It's not easy to take up as an adult. No, it's definitely NOT like walking. That would be showshoeing. Did you enjoy it?
  2. I use a watch to time my walks or runs. He can drive a route, walk it and time it. Then he'll have an idea of how far he walks in a certain amount of time. The calories burned stuff is pretty useless, IMO. If all he's doing is walking, I'm sure that he can find an on-line calculator. Again, it's just time based. The "attaboy" part is the hardest part. I find reading about all the benefits of regular physical activity and feeling them myself to be very motivational. I have more energy, less pain, a more positive outlook, among many other things. I guess a gadget can be motivating for some people. I think the duration that this kind of motivation works is limited, though. But at least it doesn't take up much room in the house when it's ditched.
  3. So, I think I must live in a little bubble removed from modern time and space. When did an Oprah Winfrey Network come into existence? And what is it? Has anyone watched Greenleaf? Is it good? I just noticed this on my Netflix. I'm in Canada by the way, so that could be part of the reason I've never heard of it. Although I have heard of Oprah Winfrey. ;)
  4. What are his fitness and food goals? Does he really need some little electronic doo-dad to tell him that he has to walk 12 hours to "work-off" a bag of cookies? If he already walks, but is looking for something or someone to give him some positive reinforcement, then I'd look for something cheaper. If he wants to lose weight, it's not going to happen from walking, unless he walks so much time he hasn't time to eat. The weight loss is going to come from diet management. Maybe you can find a little gadget that says, "Hooray, you did another wonderful walk!! That is so good for your heart and lungs and muscles and bones. Keep up the great work."
  5. According the wikipedia, The first season of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on March 10, 1997 ... but you can continue to live in any fantasy world (or Fantasy Island) you like. ;)
  6. An entire day? I can't remember. I think I'd have to be out of town and away from all family for that. When does that every happen? ;)
  7. A suspected gas leak would have sent me asking to move to a different hotel far enough away that a potential explosion wouldn't effect me. Did you know about the gas leak?
  8. Yes, I'd ask for compensation, providing that I didn't know about the water problems up front. I'm surprised that the hotel didn't offer anything, too.
  9. There's a Norwegian movie I saw recently with 2 teenage boys who are friends. They witness a murder but don't tell the police for certain reasons. It would be great for showing emotions of friends in conflict. It's in Norwegian with English subtitles, and on Netflix. It's called Eyewitness. It's rated mature audiences as there is some language, though it's in Norwegian for the most part. There is also a blooming homose*ual relationship between the 2 boys. I found it very good, and it has won awards. It may not be everyone's cup of tea.
  10. We have cold and wind here, too. Currently 0 degrees F and -22 F with the windchill (it sounds more impressive as -17C and -30C). :crying: I still went for my weekly snowshoe hike in the woods during my dc's violin ensemble rehearsal. It was actually very nice hiking as the snow is so hard. I had to really bundle up warmly, though. Tonight is my competitive doubles tennis matches. I get to team up with a lady I've only played against, and lost every single time. She's really good, so it will be fun to finally be on the same side of the net as her. I hope I play well, and she doesn't regret agreeing to spare for my team. Oh, the pressure. :willy_nilly:
  11. I was enjoying Laurence Welk with my parents in my youth. Tommy the dancer was my favourite, and Rose Milk cream kept one singer's face really smooth. 😄
  12. Not an object up the nose or in the ear, but my I've got the parenting badge on bringing in 2 children for eating my iron pills. The 3 year old couldn't open the "child proof" bottle, so he gave it to the 1 year old to do. Success! Years later I finally found out how 1 year old did it. Apparently he threw the bottle on the ground and it opened. Dh and I are going to tell this great tip to our own aging parents so they can get into their medications in case of emergency.
  13. Watching the video again (and again), I'm so glad the baby could make such a fantastic entrance and exit. It seemed to be more dangerous to the big sister during the exit, though.
  14. Priceless! Hey, are those baby bouncy/wheely things still legal in the US? He'd be in trouble in Canada.
  15. Yes, my dc are fascinated by the dancing bacon, too. I try to scroll up so I don't just sit there looking at it and smiling. ;)
  16. I'm not supposed to get into politics, but maybe taxes don't count. Justin is taxing all the rich 1% of Canadians. That eliminate any rich Canadians that we might of had. ;)
  17. I'm sorry about the issues you are facing in the US. Please stop walking across the boarder into Canada, though. It's no better here, AT ALL. Seriously. Love you all, but we can't afford refugees from the US.
  18. I HATE daylight savings. Hate everything about it. Why are we forced to do this year after year? :cursing:
  19. Ladies, I have to thank you all for inspiring me to stay active, but you know what's even more inspiring to work hard? 2 pro tennis players playing a match on the court beside you. I'm not sure if either of them noticed this old lady (me) stepping up the pace, hitting my balls harder and chasing balls like a crazy woman, but I did. I haven't played this well or this hard in a long time. My poor dh didn't know what hit him when his wife (me, again) transformed into a wild cat on the court. Sadly, I lost the set in a tie-breaker, but I had so much fun! Talk about feeling like a 20 year old. I hope I'm not too sore after this.
  20. There's a place close to me that holds Aerial yoga classes. I'm quite curious to try it out. Sounds like a lot of fun.
  21. That's the best, craziest pot hole story I've heard so far. :hurray:
  22. I was a competitive swimmer back in the era when we'd billet with families from hosting swim teams. I'm glad that era is over, frankly. Even though nothing bad happened to me, it just added more stress and distractions to the purpose of being there, to swim well. My ds 13 is now doing FTX overnight camps with cadets, and I'm all for it. The purpose of these sleep-away camps is to learn how to camp and sleep in different conditions. The additional activities are all related to camping. I like keeping things focused.
  23. Oh dear! Mosquitos AND pot holes year-round? Florida must not advertise this much, or the snow birds were stay up north more. ;) And you have alligators and scary bugs, too. It makes snow seem a little easier to take.
  24. Yes, all this stuff, plus lack of sleep, food issues, friend issues, etc., etc. just took away from the horses for me. I love camping, and I love horses, I don't need to do them all together, in fact it's way better if they're not mashed together.
  25. I got in a nice little run before lunch. My body was more prepared for constant moving, which was nice. I contemplated some fartlek (speed variation) but decided to take it nice and easy. I'll try it on my bike instead.
