Went to my cancer exercise class. A woman led it instead of the gentleman we usually have. I liked her so much better. She was more efficient in terms of using the time allotted, and was always encouraging us to push just a little bit more. My foot is still swollen, and it seems my life is an endless parade of appointments for doctors, testing, and then taking the kids to the dentist, doctor and orthodontist, making it challenging to get much exercise in. 😕

Walks of various lengths daily

Tuesday- upper body strength

Wednesday- mixed cardio

Today- more upper body strength

@wintermom thank you for the kind words- I have just been a bit overwhelmed. I'm feeling better today but had several rough days of too many stressful things at once. More already had some stress going on and then something else popped up and it put me over the top.I did some walking and crying and a lot of venting and ranting.

Cleaning and walking is all I've done for three days but the project is mostly done and today I will do a 5 mile walk this morning then a real hike in the afternoon.

I'm thinking of a summer goal of doing some hiking in our beautiful area. For the last 26 years I've had a kid in a wheelchair in my constant care. No hikes--just walks on paved surfaces. I know there are good local trails I've never been to but I'm also thinking dh and I can sneak away for a day and head to the Cascades or the coast. Need to consult with local friends on good spots to hit.

But for today it will be a 20 min Fitbymik dumbbell workout.

Monday I took a lunchtime walk up the den then did some yoga at bedtime. Yesterday I  managed a lower body weights session. Obligatory annual lamb picture attached.

I'd never do this, but I am curious how my border collie would react to being in a field with actual sheep (rather than woolly labradoodles at the dog park). Would he try to play with them AND herd them, or just try to get them to play with him?

Those lambs are adorable! Lucky you for having this scene to enjoy in your life!!

It seems I'm taking a tennis break now, since dh and I got bumped out of the tournament. It's probably good for me, as the outdoor season approaches and I want to hit the ground running.

I'm still getting in all the dog walks.

I went to a concert last night with dh. It was really fun. We had tickets before COVID, and the concert finally happened 3 years later! You guys will probably not heard many of his songs, but he's a phenomenal singer and songwriter. He does a lot of storytelling in his songs. He's Irish-British, his name is Chris de Burgh. You may know his song, "Lady in Red," but my favourite (and most people at the concert singing along to it last night as well) is "Patricia the Stripper."

I saw an untrained border collie in a field of sheep once. It herded aimlessly at high speed.  It was very lucky that the farmer happened not to be around.

I'm still running on empty -- or close to it -- in terms of time and energy to do anything beyond the minimum to get through each day. Hence my extremely sporadic check-ins here.

I've finally managed to admit and vocalize that I really dislike the new job, for a variety of reasons. But I had a moment of blinding clarity coming out of a meeting the other day that one of the two big projects I'm working on is simply of no interest at all to me. I won't go so far as to say it is not aligned with my values, in that it doesn't go against them, exactly. It just isn't at all why I care about doing what I do. No clue what that means, since I don't see a good way out of it, but admitting it out loud hit me hard.

I'm still not sleeping well or enough (averaging under five hours a night this week). Yesterday, I hit a wall shortly before 2:00 and came home because I was too tired to think and had drunk so much tea and soda trying to keep myself functional that I made myself sick.

I'm in my last week of the semester. I turned in one of my big final papers early, because I had reached the stage at which I was just tinkering with it and became nervous that I would introduce errors. The other one is due Monday, so when I'm not sitting through my work hours, exercising, walking the dog or trying to sleep, I'm working on that. I'm glad I'm doing this school thing, but I will also be very glad when I click "submit" on this last paper and get a break for the summer.

In general, with the exception of a day here and there when I just run out of steam, I'm still making my daily step counts and doing some kind of exercise, although there are days like today when that amounts to only 15 minutes of light yoga or stretching. The dog still seems content with having me go out for a "real" walk without her first thing, leaving her snoozing in her crate, then taking her out for a brief ramble. This routine makes it much more feasible and pleasant for me to get in a decent number of steps at pace before starting the rest of my day, which I do appreciate. She is of the opinion that the proper time for a longer walk is in the late afternoon/early evening when I get home from work, which works out nicely. That walk is slower, but we usually log at least three or four kilometers, which is sometimes enough to finish off my daily step goal, depending on how much I have moved around at work.

Today was a little over 4K on my own, followed by .6K with the pup. All I had time for other than the walking was an 8-minute deskercise video and the first 5 minutes of one of Joelle's yoga routines. When I got home this evening, doggo and I went back out for a leisurely 3.5K. I'm about 2,000 steps short of the daily goal, but I need to work on my paper while my brain is still kind of in gear. So, I will pace the living room or ride the stationary bike at some point before bed to finish off the count.

Yes, I've heard that uncontrolled dogs can kill sheep by chasing them, causing them to have heart attacks, as well as mauling them It's so sad.

Yes. Luckily we saw a dog owner searching for a dog shortly after we saw what was happening, and were able to tell her where the dog was. It hadn't responded when we tried to call it over.

Is it possible to have a "clapping" injury? My shoulder is very sore, and the only 2 things I've done (besides being old) is kayak last Saturday and clap my hands for most of the concert on Wednsday? I'm definitely getting old!

Dh and I are playing mixed doubles tennis this evening. Hopefully my shoulder will be fine, as surely  clapping and tennis use different muscles groups! 😅

I spent 8 hours at the mechanics yesterday, but managed to walk 3 miles and see 8 Peregrine falcons in a kettle while waiting for my car to be done.

Today I thought i was doing a 6 hour, 7 peak hike but there are thunderstorms in the forecast so will maybe do half of that and call it a day.

You're a star for surviving 8 hours of waiting! That definitely would have killed me. Patience is not my strength. Homeschooling 4 dc was hard.  What kind of a "kettle" were the falcons in?

So when raptors migrate they seek warm thermal air masses that rise up from the warmer earth and when they find one they can soar for miles.  They spiral up and eventually the thermal will stall or cool and the raptors can soar down and find another thermal to ride, thus saving them a lot of energy while migrating.  Because every raptor is looking for thermals, groups will tend to travel together, including different species, forming what's called a kettle. On good days with lots of thermals, some raptors can travel as far as 300 miles in a day.

I did end up doing a 7 peak, 7 hour hike yesterday, because I realized the forecast I was looking at was for Washington, DC where we are going tomorrow, oops!  In fact it was a beautiful sunny day here, slightly chilly, perfect hiking weather.  We saw one Peregrine and a thrush escorted us through her territory, flitting from tree to tree along the path next to us for a few hundred feet.

I'm not nearly as sore as I expected to be, but my cardio capacity is kind of annoying -I have to stop and breathe hard so often.  I think it has something to do with talking to my friend as we're hiking, I don't have nearly as much of a problem when I'm alone.

Tips for at-home, no-machine cardio improvement?

Dh and I took the dogs for 2 walks already today - in two different off-leash parks. We were booked into a tour/assessment to become members at a private 100-acre off-leash dog park at 10am, but we also dropped off dd at the uni for her last exam at 9am. So to kill some time before going to the new dog park, we made a quick visit at the public dog park. The dogs, dh and I should nap well now!

This private park is amazing! I feel like I now own the 100-acre piece of land with evergreen woods, open areas, etc. out in the country, but I let other people hike there and someone else maintains the property (plus, there is a clean toilet to use!). It will be glorious to hike there with the dogs and know that no cyclists or uncontrolled dogs are allowed, and the pooh cleaning is WAY better.

I'm fascinated in how many different smaller mammals there are in England compared to North America. I'm learning about Pine Martins (Scotland), badgers (who live in sets), hedgehogs, stoats, and water rats (I believe there is another name for these?). British TV and books are my information sources rather than scientific study. 😄

I'm curious if the skunk was ever introduced to Great Britian, or even appears in zoos? They are pretty cool creatures, and their defence mechanism is memorable. Their smell is so distints and once you've smelt it you'd know it again in an instant.

Just random thoughts as spring progresses and our local wildlife come out of hibernation to make their presence known in suburbia. 😉

Good morning,

Posting to stay accountable.  Keeping up with daily walks and back up to my regular lifting schedule.   One day I'll remember and finally learn that there are many programs I just should not do.

Hear, hear! If I ever heal from this injury there are certainly things I will not resume. Ever.

@Jenny in Florida Ugh, I'm sorry you are not enjoying the new job 😞 It is so hard to know how you will like something until you are in it and then companies don't always portray the job accurately. Huzzah for being so close to finishing the semester. It sounds like you desperately need a bit of downtime.

@Eos I'm jealous of the wonderful hikes. Good for you!

@knitgrl I hate that you are still dealing with a foot injury. I know that is frustrating.

@Laura Corin Enjoy your visit with you daughter.

@wintermom Yes, bodies are weird. Sometimes things hurt right away and sometimes it is delayed and some things hurt that shouldn't while other things you think are more intense turn out fine! We have forest around us that is rarely visited by anyone I like to claim it as my own too.

@Toocrazy!! enjoy the vacay!

Last week I hit my step goal and got 3 strength sessions.

I did quite a bit of yard work this weekend and finally have the yard looking decent. Things grow quickly this time of year and we'd been too busy.

None of the strength sessions were particularly long or intense but I did them. I'm still on upper body only due to my injury.

I think I finally got down to a level of pain relief that is manageable. (I've been trying to lower down but kept going too low and having too much pain and reduced ROM). I've been able to hold steady at 4 ibuprofen, 2 acetaminophens + gabapentin daily. I was at 8 ibuprofen + gabapentin for a month or so. Tylenol on its own does pretty much nothing but helps with the ibuprofen and ideally, I don't want to take so much of one thing. I'm going to try and maintain this level for a couple of weeks and then see if I can reduce

walk (done) + strength (doing shortly)- hoping for another short walk with dh later and I'm taking dd's to pick strawberries lately

My stress level is way, way down. The last week, really the last 2 weeks, was

it some more.

Today's plan:  rough. Dd was not doing well with the upcoming anniversary and I found myself struggling with my own emotions remembering it all. It caught me a bit off guard. I was just thinking of her and hadn't really considered how it did/would affect me (us). One day I had a nice walk and cry by myself and felt all the things. I also vented and ranted and chatted until I was all talked out.

My schedule is also much better this week. Last week was a bit bonkers. This week is a manageable level. I've got things to do every day but not so many jam-packed days.

@Soror @Kassia Did you see that Caroline Girvan is coming out with an app? I've been enjoying her YouTube workouts (slowly and spaced waay out), but I have no interest in an app, so that is too bad for me. Hopefully it is a positive for her. If her YouTube stuff goes away I'll be back for recommendations!

Yes, I did see. I'm still doing her workouts now but just shorter upper body ones or low intensity cardio. I adore her so I'll probably check out the free trial of the app to see how I like it. I prefer it on YouTube but I know I can cast to the TV so that might not be so bad. I'd like to support her as she's done so much for free but it is my understanding the past workouts will stay on the channel she will just be slowing way down on releasing new ones for YT.

Yes, I did see that.  I'm disappointed but understand.  I heard that she said she will keep her current workouts on youtube there so I am grateful for that.  I won't subscribe because I'm not interested in all the extras and I never do her full rotations.  I mostly like her strength workouts that are standing lower body and upper body (but I'm picky about those).

I have lots of other recommendations if/when you want them.

@Soror I missed that you are injured so badly.  What happened?  I'm really struggling with workout limitations due to my botched foot surgery and then I hurt my back last month (although that's improved a lot).  I'm sorry you are hurting.

Dh and I took the dogs to "our" woods! It was so peaceful and lovely! There are fewer dogs, and it seemed like our dogs were more relaxed on the walk than at the public dog park. They enjoy seeing other dogs, but there is always a little tension when encountering other dogs.

Tomorrow morning I'm playing tennis. My hamstring is healing really well, so hopefully I won't tweak it.

8 more weeks of school. I'm thinking about summer and my project idea of doing some hiking. So in anticipation of that, when I did my treadmill walking this morning I tried a 1% incline which I handled fine. I should also do some real walks in our slightly hilly neighborhood.

Hmmm I don't know that I'd call it a bad injury. I didn't break anything. I aggravated my sciatic nerve. Looking back I think it was a combo of yoga, some specific strength moves, and sitting. I was stretching more due to some tightness. I thought it was muscle tightness but I think now that was the sciatica. The stretching aggravated it more then deadlifts finished it off (even though I didn't use high weights, was warmed up and watched my form). The sitting is something I'm just going to have to watch and I don't expect to ever do deadlifts in any form again. I know when I started teaching online sitting for a couple of hours would bother me. It annoys me that plenty of people sit way more than I ever do but have no issue.  My last plane ride I had a fair amount of pain. But it went away and I honestly didn't realize what it was at the time. I guess with my anatomy it is something I'll need to be vigilant about. I think PT just prolonged things. She was so convinced that the problem was I didn't rest enough so for 2 months I did nothing other than easy, lightweight puttering around the house and my stretches. I think listening to my body and being as active as I'm able is good. Walking is good as long as I watch my gait and speed. I worked back up to an average of 10k steps a day and that has been a good amount. I added back in upper body strength training. I've cautiously added some cardio. I can't jump, move fast, or do lots of moves especially on the floor. My ROM is slowly improving and my pain slowly decreasing.

@Soror glad you are improving.  Sciatica is awful. I pinched a thoracic nerve in my back (self-diagnosed) and am still being very careful with lower body movements - mostly squats and deadlifts.  I'm working back up gradually doing lighter weights and more reps.  And I'm making sure to stretch every day too.

@wintermom did you ask me about wildlife?  I can't seem to find the post.  We don't often see stoats, apart from the first year when we moved to Scotland, when one used to dance on the lawn, like this:

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=265259604661832

I've seen hares a couple of times near home but they are nowhere near as common as where we were in Northumberland.  We see badgers dead by the road fairly frequently, lots of rabbits and tons of deer.  I see more foxes in cities than here.

In general, wildlife is very depleted in the UK.  There is really almost no wild land and intensive farming has not been good in such a small space.  Even insects: I remember when I was a child that the car windscreen would be covered in squashed bugs, but I rarely have to clean them off these days.  Depressing.

Back from the lovely weekend away with my daughter.  I managed no exercise yesterday and slept badly.  I was busy at lunchtime today and my pond plants arrived this afternoon, so I need to look after them.  It will be a late night walk, I think.

Nothing different or interesting to share. I've submitted all my assignments for the semester, so it's all over now but waiting for the grades.

Still not sleeping as much as I should. Still squeaking out my daily step count each day and doing at least some tiny amount of additional exercise.

Today, I overslept and had to cut short my morning walk and settle for literally five minutes of lifting dumbbells. Fortunately, it was yoga class night, which got me a little more exercise. Unfortunately, it was pouring rain by the time I got home from work tonight, meaning my plan to make up those steps I missed this morning then was thwarted. So, it wasn't until I got home from yoga that I had a chance to do any more walking. I logged my steps, but it took me until about 9:30 PM to make it happen.

A video from my walk. Hopefully you can hear the birds. This is about .5 miles from my house I was walking back. This is the route I usually go, especially now that it is tick and chigger season in the woods (there is a trail but it isn't well maintained).

Upper body strength this morning too

I skipped a walk yesterday. Bad time management in the morning and I let something get to me.

Today is a new day. Getting in the groove of my new schedule is going much better this week. It helps when you're not totally swamped and stressed. (Only partially 🙂)

Lovely to hear the birds.  The trees here are at the stage of hazy, very young leaf growth, very bright green.  It's one of my favourite times of year.  It reminds me of this poem: https://poetryarchive.org/poem/trees/

More treadmill yesterday and today I did a Fitbymik cardio workout. Dh was up early yesterday-hence the treadmill-and asked if I would prefer to be doing treadmill every day. But actually no, I think it's better for me to mix things up a bit. Much more full body movement in today's workout--and barefoot which I think helps me avoid foot issues.

You have leaves on your trees!!  And no shoulder on that road. Is that typical in your area? We always have a gravel or paved shoulder (more rare) on our paved roads. It seems foreign to me to see the green grass go right up to the pavement. Strange how these little things stick out. 😉

With the stoat being such an adorable creature, why would they be the villian in "Wind in the Willows?" Do they cause damage to the land or other creatures?

They eat small, sweet, furry mammals like water rats and moles....

We think that the stoat used to go into our attic to chase mice.  Goodness it was noisy!  Ancient tiled roof that was hard to seal.
