Teaching3bears
Any suggestions? I have no idea what he already has. I don't know him or what he likes, other than he likes school so I want something that most boys his age like. I also have no idea what he already has. I was thinking of spending about $20. Does that seem like the right amount for birthday gifts these days?
Spy Car
Cash. Bill
katilac
With that little information, I'd probably go for cash. You could also give a dollar for each year, so $12 cash, and then a few fun snacks if you wanted more of the fun of opening a gift. For the remaining $8, you could get several different small snacks and he's bound to like some of it, and it can all go in a box or gift bag. If you search "fun ways to give cash" you will get lots of ideas as well, but it's tough to theme it when you don't have any idea of what he likes. Tanaqui
At his age, given that you have NO information on his likes or dislikes, I'd go with cash or a gift card.
Ottakee
My go to gift for that age was 12 $1 bills and a $4 book from Amazon on money origami.
FriedClams
Legos. But, I ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Legos.
mmasc
If he likes school, he might also like some nice, new pens (my ds likes pentel uniball), or a sketchbook? Or cash.
frogger
At that age it really depends on hobbies and interests. If I knew little about him, I'd go with cash. Though one of my sons loved legos until he was an adult, my second son wanted tools etc by then. Really, he was ready for adult stuff like real socket sets, knives, outdoor gear, or biking equipment and tools, or even clothes. Without knowing cash is the only safe bet. Teaching3bears
Thanks everyone, but I don't feel comfortable with giving cash. It just doesn't feel right for me in these circumstances. Any other ideas?
alisoncooks
I don't like giving cash but what about a gift card?
Teaching3bears
Sorry, I wasn't clear. He is a new friend of my son. My son doesn't know him well either but is invited to his party. I don't know that there will be many kids there. I think it's nice fir him to arrive with a colourfully-wrapped gift.
Pen
Amazon gift card but cash might be more appreciated if he doesn’t normally use Amazon. Or if Amazon $30 if $25 is still the free shipping amount
Pen
I can’t think of anything that would be sure to fit “what most 12 year old boys like” that he “doesn’t already have” and at $20 — other than cash which most 12 year old boys love. itsheresomewhere
At 12, a gift card or cash works best. My youngest was not into colorful wrapped presents at that age. If you really feel the need to wrap something, attach the gift card or cash to a box of candy or chips.
Kareni
I'd suggest a two person game that your son likes that they can play together. Regards, Kareni
frogger
If there was an opportunity I'd ask the mom. Otherwise, things listed in order from most likely to be recieved well to more risky. Candy (although this can frustrate parents of children with special diets) Flashlights Gift certificates to Cold Stone etc Legos
Tanaqui
Okay, so call his mom and ask for suggestions.

73349
Gift card to an outing place (wrapped in a box) if there's a fun one nearby. Around here, kids like Defy Gravity, ice skating, rock climbing, sometimes bowling. Edited August 13, 2019 by whitehawk
