My son's experience with grocery delivery

We tried Shipt for the first time this week.  My son's cough has been persistent and I decided to order from Target so I could get him some quality cough syrup and Shipt uses Target.  It all went smoothly until the shopper got to my son's on campus apartment.  The security wouldn't let the woman in and she texted for my son to come meet her.  He did, not a huge deal, and helped her walk the bags to his apartment.

My son called me as soon as she left.  Apparently as they were walking past the security gate, the woman loudly said, "I would have come to your apartment to deliver these, but these Mother F******rs wouldn't let me in!"

My son said he was horrified.  He said the security is so nice to him all the time and try so hard to keep them safe and they don't deserve to be treated like that.

My *guess* is that the woman was rude before my son even got there and security didn't feel comfortable letting her in.

I called Shipt and complained.  They credited me with 2 months of service and a $30 credit.

But the thing I wanted to relay to any of you using Shipt is that they told me that if you leave a 1 or 2 star rating, that person is permanently disconnected from your account and can never even see when you make a request, so they aren't ever allowed to fill your orders again.  So, something to keep in mind.

you seem  bothered by the rules shipit has for it's contractors who do delivery.

do the security people for his dorm normally let people in because they say they're supposed to deliver something to someone?  if so, why are they there?  anyone could say they were "delivering" and get right past them.

the woman sounded VERY out of line in her behavior.   if she will be blocked from seeing your son's orders, someone else will deliver them.

My husband told me the same thing about Uber. If I get a driver that is unprofessional (speeding, excessive honking), I was to give a really bad rating instead of giving a 3, so I don’t get that driver again.

What?  I never said I was bothered by any of the rules, what are you talking about?

The people with Instacat and Shipt are supposed to show proof through the order that the delivery is paid for and expected and then they are let through.  I actually SAID in my OP that helping her get the groceries to his apartment was NOT a big deal.

And to the last part, I KNOW what blocked means.....

I would be surprised if the delivery person is on the job in a month.

Campus security has policies on who is allowed in unescorted; perhaps its time to review that.

The school allows them in if they have the order receipt showing the name and room number, which she should have had, but I am guessing she was rude from the start and that is why they didn't let her in.

I would hope she either doesn't act like this all the time, or that they do fire her.

Good to know. I've only had excellent service from my shoppers, to the point where I won't use Walmart pick up because the service is so bad compared to shipt. (also for those with multiple store options, compare prices! Publix using shipt is much more expensive than normal in store publix prices, but target with shipt is perfectly reasonable, where I am. I was avoiding shipt because of how expensive it was until someone told me to check the target prices and compare.)

Oh, and if they substitute something and you don't like it they have you keep it but credit you for the cost. So I once asked for a specific scent of Mrs. Meyers cleaner and the store didn't have it so she substituted the lemon verbena, which I hate. (my fault, I had checked off to substitute without checking with me, you can tell them to message you instead, and they always do). I told the shopper not to worry about it, I'd donate it or something, as I didn't want her to get in trouble but she said it's no problem, that shipt REALLY wants to provide good service and will happily take the charge off.

Interesting!  And good to know.  I think we will still have to use it for Publix as Target there isn't a true grocery store, and Publix online is still way cheaper than the meal plan!

How far does Shipt like to deliver?  Is there a range?

When I keyed in my zip code at this link, it says that they deliver from my nearby Target, Safeway and CVS.  Both Target and CVS are in the same compound 2.3 miles driving distance away while Safeway is a 10mins walk down the road. Shipt does not do Walmart delivery, my nearest Walmart is 3 miles driving distance away.

ETA:

My husband’s office location gets Mollie Stone (supermarket) as well which is 8.9 miles driving distance away from his office and 14 miles from home.

I have only used it once now but may use it for our personal stuff locally when I need/want to.  Our nearest Target is 7 miles......

When you put in your address it pops up with what stores it will deliver from in your area. For me I have a lot...Winn Dixie, CVS, Publix, Costco, ABC Liquor, Target, and maybe another? But...each store you have to meet the minimum order for free delivery, I think $35. So I can't order $10 from CVS and $25 from ABC Liquor for example. And you do need to tip (well, you should or you are a bad person, lol). And there is a membership fee. But for busy people like working moms (my sister) or when the kids are sick, or when we are on a roll with homeschooling or cleaning and I know that dragging all the kids out to shop will ruin the momentum, it is a life saver.

Also, some find they save money because no impulse purchases, lol.

Are you supposed to tip the Wal-Mart employees that bring your groceries to your car with the grocery pickup service? I know some employees of big companies can't accept tips.

I used the service recently when I was in a nearby city and I had a tip for one person but TWO employees came out to load up the groceries! 😲

I use a combo of Costco (which outsources to Instacart) and Amazon Prime Now (which outsources to Whole Foods and other stores). Both are included in my normal annual membership fees, so I don't need to pay for an additional delivery service fee on top of it. Just the tips.

man, I don't know? I've only done it once and it was such a bust I blocked it out of my mind. I can assure you that if cash tipping was involved I didn't. But I don't remember if there was a tip on the app...I don't think so though.

My problem with walmart pick up is that they don't contact you about substitutions ahead of time. They just do it, and then when they bring out the groceries they tell you. At that point they can remove the items if you want, but it will take them a week or something like that to actually refund you! And the substations they made were lousy. Like, no, regular soda is NOT a good substitution for diet soda. That kind of thing. And now with my son being gluten free I don't know that I trust them. With Shipt, they message me while they are shopping, and give me options. So they were out of the gluten free pizza I had ordered, and she sent me actual pictures of the other items that they DID have in stock, and let me pick which I wanted, or decline all together. And I can leave special notes when I order, like, "I'm not picky about anything except the brand of diapers, please don't substitute those" or "text me when you get here, don't knock, so you don't wake the baby up" or whatever.

With walmart instead of Fresca I got mountain dew or something like that, and then was without any diet soda all together because they won't run in and get a different diet soda for me, and I can't drink regular. That kind of thing.

I've only done pick-up at Wal-Mart and was told they are not supposed to take tips. Our experience has been outstanding, the only things that were substituted were things that matched (they gave me name brand instead of the generic I ordered). I'm guessing it depends on how good of training and hiring practices they have.

There is definitely no tip option on the app so that makes me feel better.

I can see why substitutions for your family wouldn't work out great. We don't have any specific dietary needs in our family. We were substituted brand name hot chocolate mix for the off brand and brand name almond milk for the off brand, so both our substitutions worked out great for us! 😄

Thanks.  I knew about the $35 min and only from each store and I knew there was a fee....I have a $49/year membership code to use when the 2 free months end.

I am also thinking it might end up saving me $$ because of no impulse shopping, making me think a little more and meal plan better, etc.....

And I do tip!

Ok, mine shows Publix, Harris Teeter, Target, CVS, and Lidl.  Darn, no Costco.  Costco is 15 miles away though.

If you have a Costco membership, you get free delivery through Instacart. Go to the Coscto website. It is called Same-Day Grocery Delivery (if they have it in your area).

Ah, ok.  I don't actually have an Instacart membership.  I was using the 2 week free trial.

I like delivery for certain things, but I like to pick out my own meats and produce, so I end up in the store anyway... and then I buy all of the stuff that I didn’t order. 😉

It’s great that the pickup and delivery options available, but I don’t use them very often any more.

Yeah, it was really bad. Like, substituting watermelon flavored drink mix for the bottle of lemon lime gatorade I'd ordered for a dehydrated sick kid, etc. I forget all the rest, but it was about 5 items, and none of the substitutions really worked for me. And it did take a full week to refund.

@Ktgrok there is an option in the ordering process for Walmart to not substitute items.

Ok, THAT is good to know! They are going to be opening up the pick up service at the one just down the street from me, so that would be pretty convenient. I may give it another try then.
