gardenmom5
I hadn't thought about it, but a friend posted a link to a: rifd anti-theft bag on ebags. slash proof, rif-proof, etc. there's wire mesh in the bags and wire cables in the straps to make them slash proof. hadn't thought about it - but now I'm looking. amazon has them too, so I'm not posting a link. I just did the search for rifd anti-theft crossbody. different styles and colors.

With all the thought given to security, you would think they wouldn't use cheap hardware where the strap attaches to the purse! (I'm not rough on my handbags either.) Miss Tick
You are going to Austria, right? I'm imagining it doesn't have a big theft problem, no? I say just disperse your valuables a bit. Carry your cash for the day in a zipper pocket on your body, try not to carry your passports everywhere, use your purse to hold sunglasses, book, tickets snack, phone. Keep your key in your pocket. I've been pondering this for our own upcoming trip.
Twolittleboys
I wouldn't worry about it. I generally carry cash/credit cards/passports in a small pouch under my shirt whenever I travel (no matter where) and it is a good idea to keep track of your purse (i.e. carry it more in front). Anything else is overkill in my opinion. And Austria is hardly a hotbed of crime.
Happy
I keep credit card sized cards that block the ability for someone to steal cc info from my wallet. Found them on Amazon. My travel purses are smaller cross body bags with lots of zippers. I just used a cute Vera Bradley bag while we were at Disney. All the pockets and zippers kept everything secure. If I'm in a crowded place like Rome, I wear the cross body bag between me and my husband or sons. Mostly I try to stay observant.
SKL
I don't carry a purse. I keep my wallet and cell phone in my front pockets (zippered if appropriate) when walking in areas that feel shady. I knew an old lady who had her arm busted and shoulder injured because she made it hard for a purse-snatcher. Wires in the strap etc. might not prevent the theft, it might just hurt you more. Hard to say. So if I was going to carry a purse, it wouldn't contain anything I cared much about, and I wouldn't go to extra measures to protect it. Laurie
Wires in the strap etc. might not prevent the theft, it might just hurt you more. Hard to say. More about the purse I was complaining about... The stitching on the strap was also coming loose and exposing the security wire! Apparently they didn't use the "security" thread! HomeAgain
I don't carry a purse when traveling. The only things I need are money, ID, phone, and possibly passport when out and about, so I don't take a bag at all. Front pockets or inside pocket on a zippered jacket are my go-tos. CAJinBE
With a cross body bag you should be fine. Never put it down anywhere. And make copies of all your documents and keep them separately, either with another person or in your suitcase. You won't need to carry huge amounts of cash at any one time, just use an ATM at a bank. Alternatively, split the cash up between travelers. You will probably want a small change purse because Europeans use more coins than Americans. For example, the two euro coin is really useful for buying drinks, postcards, etc. Bathrooms usually take coins, usually one euro or 50 cents. As someone who always has an eye open for public restrooms while traveling, I've learned to never be without coins and tissues. Do you have chip cards? Most places use the pin cards in Europe, but you'll still find cash only places.
FriedClams
I travel a lot and I've switched to a travel jacket (Scott evest) or vest (Eddie Bauer). Hands free, passport is zippered inside, RFID pockets... It's just so much less hassle than guarding a purse. Before I used a Travelon and never had any issues with it, but the jacket is SO much easier.

J-rap
I purchased a small crossbody purse from Pacsafe.com years ago. This one, I think, or similar: https://www.pacsafe.com/citysafe-cs75-anti-theft-cross-body-travel-bag/20205100.html?cgid=cross-body#start=1 Yeah, it's overkill for most traveling, but it's tough and it's been around the world with me. It has tons of little pockets and compartments for organizing, and you can even lock it. It's really multi-purpose.
FriedClams
Where did you buy the jacket? I could use something like that! I bought my jacket on Amazon. 😉 It makes for a heavy jacket, but I just think it's easier to manage.

I said I don't feel the need for travel purses, but I'm rethinkinging my position looking at that purse, haha. Conveniently it is outside of the impulse buy range.
Catwoman
I bought my jacket on Amazon. 😉 It makes for a heavy jacket, but I just think it's easier to manage. Thanks! I have a bad shoulder and when I’m doing a lot of walking, it can be painful after a while to lug a handbag around, even if it’s a crossbody, so I’ll definitely check out the jacket. Edited to add — this one looks very nice! https://www.amazon.com/SCOTTeVEST-Womens-Trench-Coat-Clothing/dp/B01E5Z17PC/ref=sr_1_16?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1519224988&sr=1-16&nodeID=7147440011&psd=1&keywords=scottevest&th=1 Edited February 21, 2018 by Catwoman
shawthorne44
I always kept really important stuff in a bag hanging around my neck. I bought one that has a black leather cord that someone might use for a casual necklace. If I would be wearing a jacket with a waist-band, the second level of stuff would go in a fanny pack with the bag part at the small of my back under the jacket with the jacket zipped at the waist. Third level of stuff, I would carry in a shopping bag. Who steals shopping bags? One thing to avoid is the waist thing that is under your pants. Everyone knows that they are common. The thieves know when you are wearing one, and those little $#@$# are quick. I remember a professor who was a big muscular guy talk about in Paris one of those kids shoving a piece of cardboard into his belly, and then lightening quick undoing his belt, unzipping the 'hidden' waist bag and snatching all his stuff in there. He snatched the kid off the ground and held him up kicking and screaming while they got their stuff back. The kid had an amazing amount of other people's stuff that they turned over to the police. I've bought a few different-sized bags from them as needed. The only places where I really and truly didn't want to even carry my Pacsafe bag or anything for that matter (not even a watch) was in Santiago and Buenos Aires. I have used my Pacsafe bags in Europe.
Alicia64
I LOVE these kind of threads where we share links to great products!! Dh wears a money belt. Most of the $ is kept in the back. But there's a front compartment that's easy to access. Alley

Beth S
OK, now all I can think about are those VISA Olympic commercials with Chloe Kim waving her credit card in front of a vending machine. Thanks, Hive. I wear a thin money "purse" under my clothes when sight-seeing, so now I'm adding tin foil to the list!
