momto10blessings
I'm hosting a baby shower for my sister-in-law who is having baby #7 after a 7 year gap. I'd like to have a couple games, but everyone seems to hate baby shower games. No measuring her belly or anything inappropriate like bobbing for nlpples. Something easy and cheap because I'm already spending a fortune on other stuff. Oh and if you have ideas for prizes that are also cheap, please add those. Thank you! edit: and if it has something to do with large family/ baby #7, that would be a bonus. Miss Peregrine
Match the baby name to the meaning. Use the attendees' children's names. It's fun when everyone slowly starts to realize the names belong to them.
gardenmom5
matching the name of the mommy animal with the baby animal. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/animals/Animalbabies.shtml https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animal_names you give the name of the animal - they have to either fill out a blank line with mother and baby, or you can have them and they draw lines to match, or have the names at the bottom of the page. e.g. cow - calf doe - joey doe - fawn ewe - lamb doe/nanny - kid mare - foal eta; this was a good site, but I've seen some other names other places. e.g. kit for a baby fox. I've also heard a murder of crows . . . . Edited October 24, 2016 by gardenmom5
ktgrok
Match the nursery rhyme with the weird description of it, guess the price on various baby items, the baby animals one, hmm...not sure what else. I've seen ones where they melted different types of chocolate bars/candies in diapers and you had to guess :)
AFwife Claire
I've done the name/meaning matching game before as well. I also made up a "mad-libs' style story, and I go around the room, asking people to give me a noun, adjective, etc. At the end, when I read it, it's a "birth story" of sorts. That's usually pretty funny, although you have to have a group that actually knows parts of speech, so it's not embarrassing, lol (or tell them "a thing" or "a describing word"). I also made up a matching game using lines from famous children's story books (like Madeline, Go Dog, Go, Little Engine that Could--those kinds of books). If anyone is remotely interested in these games, I'm happy to send them to you! Just message me. I am *not* a huge game person at all, but these weren't too painful to play, lol.
athomeontheprairie
Depending on your attendees, I like competition style games . We played jeopardy. I had categories like nursery rhyme colors (baa baa Black sheep) who's your momma? (Famous babies, they called for the mother. I also used the grandparents babies on this category, and cartoon children) famous books (first or famous line from a well-known children's book). I don't remember what my other categories were, but I had so much fun making the game and it was a blast. I had a tray with baby paraphernalia on it, and contestants had one minute to look at it , then I took it away. them they had a few minutes to write down everything they could remember . The person that have the most items won a prize. I gave out 100 g candy bars, because babies cost a lot. I'm currently planning a baby shower now, and we're going to play family feud baby shower style. to get the answers for the show , I am polling the men of our group. The shower is women only.
Rebel Yell
Purchase thank you cards in advance. Set the cards aside, and have everyone (or knew person from each family) address an envelope to themselves. Put th envelopes in a basket. Draw envelopes for prizes. As the mother to be opens gifts, set a timer. If it goes off while your gift is being opened, you get a prize. I like these two because they are random... no skills involved, so no fierce competition. Give everyone a clothespin, diaper pin, tiny plastic baby, tiny plastic pacifier or whatever... (same item for everyone) No one is allowed to say the word "BABY", if they do th first person to call them on it gets all of their items. Pick a time limit and at the designated time person with most items wins. BABYO, like BINGO Pass out blank grids like Bingo cards, guests randomly fill in each square with gifts they think will be given. Pick which Bingo format wins, full card, straight line, etc. make a rule that the "free space" in the center is for your own gift, so if someone give a basket of small items they don't list everything they give and win as soon as their gift is opened.
KatieJ
My friend set up her baby shower games on a table away from where we were sitting. You could walk over and participate or not. Everyone did, but it was very casual and we worked on those games while we were getting and eating our food. Afterwards we all were able to sit and watch the gift opening. Someone checked our answers for the games, and prizes were awarded after the gift opening. No I don't remember the games!! Elizabeth 2
I did a game that started with stealing gifts and ended with a poem. There were ~10 identical gift bags with tags on them. Each person at the party was given an equal amount of playing cards. As I called the cards in the deck, a card holder would get up and get a bag. After a while, people have to 'steal' them. It can get really fun and funny. Then read a poem. I wrote one for one party (close friend) and found one online for the other. Each tag relates to a certain line in the poem, and the gift inside. So if the poem talks about eating, there are baby spoons and bins inside. Plus each bag had a quality chocolate or nice cards inside. So anyone who participated had a laugh, it took no skill or memory, and no ones feelings got hurt. Momma got lots of little things that add up (I use coupons/sales to collect as soon as I find out someone's pregnant, so it's not horrible.). I've also done the price is right on baby things. That was hilarious and the guys actually did well!

AK_Mom4
The best one was Settlers of Cataan - we played in teams. Though I think Ticket To Ride and Apples to Apples would be good choices too. Though since this is a baby shower, maybe Cards Against Humanity? I hate most of the traditional baby shower games and would rather sit and visit and watch Mom2Be open presents.
SebastianCat
If this is baby #7, what about a trivia game with interesting facts about the mom's other children, and perhaps the mom and dad as well? We played a similar game at a church function recently, and it was a lot of fun - especially if the guests aren't all family. Questions would be like, "Which member of the ___ family busted open their forehead when they were two and needed 5 stitches?" or "Which member of the ____ family was born 2 weeks after their due date?" You'd have to OK it with the mom-to-be and get her input on questions, of course.
HS Mom in NC
Do they hate baby shower games or do they hate games in general? If they hate games in general then game suggestions won't be useful. It is possible for adults to have fun and celebrate a new baby without playing any games. Just sayin'.I agree that being nagged about playing a game is incredibly irritating. Since that was mentioned, I have questions about that: Why do people ask again after a clear no? Do they believe the person who said no secretly wants to say yes but just can't bring themselves to do it the first time they're asked? Are they incapable of processing the idea that some people just don't like playing games? What gives? Here's a transcript of the last time I was nagged to play a game at a church potluck.Pastor: "Who wants to pay Quiddler?" (Some hands went up. Not mine.)Pastor: "OK, if you want to play Quiddler we'll play it in the dining room. (Some people started getting up to go into the dinning room. Not me.)Pastor to people who didn't get up to play in the other room: "Do you want to play, (insert name here)? " and "Do you want to play (insert another name here)?" Do you want to play [Homeschool Mom in AZ]?Me: (In a very polite, friendly tone) "No thanks."Pastor: " Are you sure you don't want to play?"Me: (In a neutral tone of voice) "Yes."Pastor: "You'd be really good at this. You don't want to play?"Me: (In a firm mother-is-very-displeased voice) "Roger, I don't want to play a game ever."Pastor: (nervous laughter) "Whoa. Just tell us how you really feel."Me: (In a matter of fact tone) " I did. I told you more than once so it's your own fault I had to tell you in firm tone."Pastor's Wife to Pastor: "You set yourself up for that one. We all heard her tell you twice that she didn't want to play. You should've taken the first no she gave you."Since then it's a running joke at church to say, "Who wants to play (insert name of game here)? We know [Homeschool Mom in AZ] doesn't want to."

I actually agree with you about addressing your own envelopes. However, it IS a fun way to have a "game" that isn't really a game. And for me, the most overwhelming part of writing thank yous is getting started, so if I had my wedding shower thankynyou envelopes already addressed I might have actually sent them out. 1GirlTwinBoys
At my shower they had a sheet of paper with animal names and you had to list what the baby was called. I remember some were really hard and whoever got the most right won the game. It was cute! Example below: Goose = Gosling Deer = Fawn ETA: Honestly, I never liked when I was at a baby shower and we had to address the thank you envelopes. If people come and spend their weekend time that they could be with their own family, or doing whatever, and bring you a gift, the least the person can do is take the time to write out their own thank you notes. melbotoast
At the last baby shower I attended, we played cards against humanity with a baby theme. (Someone found the themed cards online and printed them.) It was very funny and easy to play.
