Night Elf
Dd wants a Kindle she can read at night in a dark room but doesn't want an expensive one. Is the 6" paperwhite the one she wants? The new Kindle that is only $60 doesn't say anything about being able to read it day or night.
Night Elf
Oh wait, there's a Fire for only $50. That might be good. I have a Fire and I read at night.
ebrindam
There's a Paperwhite for $120. I much prefer that to the Kindle Fire. I think the Fire is hard to read on...it makes my eyes hurt. The Paperwhite is truly perfect, just like reading a real book. However, because I am an obsessive reader I would definitely rather have the Fire than nothing!!
nd293
Paperwhite has a better sort of lighting than a traditional tablet. Much better for reading at night as it has a more diffuse light.
Slache
Paperwhite!
Ottakee
Paperwhite if you can afford it.
nansk
Another vote for Paperwhite if you can afford it. Otherwise, get the Fire and buy the Bluelight app.
PinkInTheBlue
Absolutely Paperwhite! :)
Misha
Another vote for the Paperwhite here too. It's much easier on the eyes than the Fire.
TrixieB
The Kindle Paperwhite is a good choice. The only downside I have found: if you tend to fall asleep while reading, like I do, and your thumb is hovering over the screen ready to turn the page, when you wake up you might be many pages farther into the book than you remember reading! yes, this is a regular occurrence :blushing: At least it's quick to un-read those pages! BTW, the Kindle Fire has a blue light setting but I prefer the Paperwhite. It's lighter, thinner, and easier on the eyes. No screen glare, to boot.
TechWife
I have an e-reader history here! I had been using a kindle and it stopped charging and I decided to replace it and my iPad 2 with a iPad mini. For some reason, I'm not sure if it was the light or the distraction of having games and the internet at my fingertip, I stopped reading as much. I recently got a Paperwhite and I love it! I am back to reading quite a bit and haven't had any problems. I do recommend the Paperwhite over a tablet - my eyes are much less strained. I do agree with Trixie - falling asleep with my finger on the screen sometimes causes me to move around in a book, but I can usually figure out where I am supposed to be relatively quickly. Guest
Paperwhite. Nothing with a backlight. It makes your eyes hurt and reduces retention of what you have read. If dyslexia is an issue, get the Paperwhite voyage which has a font that helps dyslexics read more fluently.
Night Elf
Wow, everyone is suggesting a Paperwhite! I have a Fire and I absolutely love it! I read for hours in the dark and it doesn't bother my eyes at all so I can't relate to what y'all are saying. I'll tell her your responses and let her decide. Thank you! Ethel Mertz
Another paperwhite vote. One of the best things about it is that I can read it even in bright sunlight. There is no glare.
Arcadia
My kids prefer Voyage to Paperwhite. They do most of their reading on my big ipad pro though because it is almost letter size. Another vote for Paperwhite if you can afford it. Otherwise, get the Fire and buy the Bluelight app. Have you tried the Blue Shade function? That is what my DS10 use on his kindle fire.
StephanieZ
The paperwhites are amazing. I love, love, love mine. They are great in the dark, the light, whatever.
Jamee
Thanks for this thread. I have a second generation Kindle--I think that's what it is--and it's suffering a slow death. Been wondering if I should upgrade it. I LOVE that I can read it in the sun.
VaKim
Kindles are on sale again right now. https://smile.amazon.com/Amazon-Kindle-Paperwhite-6-Inch-4GB-eReader/dp/B00OQVZDJM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471352394&sr=8-1&keywords=kindle+paperwhite
