unsinkable
"An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly finds a kindred spirit in a government agent who is exposed to their biotechnology." My DS introduced me to it. I don't want to "spoil it" for anyone but it was so moving to me. I saw so much of what our country and world is experiencing right now reflected in the movie. Trying to see the world from another's POV and vantage point, and the destruction that happens when we don't. It'd be good for older teens and families who are OK with rated R movies and violence.
Farrar
Yeah, that was a great film. It definitely was one that stuck with me. And it's interesting that it was South African.
Guest
It was a really good movie - I liked the social commentary that wasn't ridiculously heavy handed and made the point well. I also urge folks who enjoy sci fi and action movies to see it.

The writer-director also wrote-directed Elysium.
Farrar
Oh, I meant to see Elysium and I never did... I should see if it's streaming (or stick it on our Netflix dvd queue). ETA: Not streaming (other than to rent). Oh well. DVD queue it is I guess. Edited December 4, 2015 by Farrar
Zoo Keeper
Very thought provoking movie--and the CG bits were especially well done.
kiana
Really liked it for the above reasons. Certainly not a feel-good movie but a very good and thought-provoking movie.
Chris in VA
One of my favorites for that year! Good with a study of apartheid, too. Shows the "dehumanization" (quotes because not human) process quite well--so easy to treat others poorly when we think of them as less.
retiredHSmom
Chappie, by the same guy, is fantastic as well.
LMD
Yes it was very well done. The main character was also in Elysium.

Yes. I loved it. I couldn't stop thinking about it for months. I even went and bought a DVD of it because I had to process it all again. It is hard to talk about without giving spoilers, but.... the story is so poignant -- in a decidedly non-smarmy way. I still don't know quite how I feel about the main character's fate. It was certainly thought-provoking, that's for sure.
Outdoorsy Type
I thought it was really well done. I didn't like Elysium at all, I thought it was trite. District 9 was less heavy handed, and made the point more effectively.
Lady Florida.
We saw it and bought the dvd when it first came out, but haven't watched it in years. Now might be a good time to re-watch it.
MercyA
Yes, it's powerful and moving (though not for the faint at heart). I should watch it again.
