Numerous phone calls later, canceling cards and awaiting credits on my accounts. I am so not happy. This has never happened to me before. Anything else you think I should do??? The first time, I discovered it when my card was declined at a restaurant and I called to find out why. They asked me if I'd been ordering computer parts or hiring escort services. I said no on both counts. They had already shut down my card. That was with my actual credit card. My debit card has been hacked twice. I keep an eye on my online statement usually every couple of days, and notice charges from internet sites that I didn't make. Both times. Not happy. I don't know if there is anything else you can do once you've cancelled the card. danybug Posted April 20, 2012 Share Posted April 20, 2012 I looked at our online banking the other day and noticed a strange deduction. Someone stole my dh's bank card number and made a car payment. Luckily, my bank immediately sent it to fraud and credited it back to us. My dh contacted the company the payment was made to and they told us the only information they could give us is that it was made by someone in our state and online. It is crazy and scary how easy it is for someone to access your information. We figure that a server in a restaurant copied down his credit card number when they took our bill to pay it (and this is because he does not use his card except for gas and when our family goes out to eat). I called and come to find out that someone had racked up about $700.00 in charges to various online places. Thankfully, the card company acted quickly and shut the card down. dsmith Posted April 21, 2012 Share Posted April 21, 2012 I've had it happen twice with my Chase account. Luckily, they always catch it before I do. They pretty much freeze my account whenever anything hits it from overseas. I tried to make a mac withdrawal last week and couldn't. They put a temporary freeze on my account when I broke down and ordered the Harry Potter ebooks on Pottermore. I'd rather have them be over cautious. We just had our business debit card hacked a few weeks ago. Someone purchased a $1300 plane ticket from Paris to Abu Dhabi Int. Airport. That's the third time on the business account. One time somebody had cloned our cards and gone on a shopping spree in New York. Just two weeks ago, somebody cloned our cards and went on a spending spree in Malaysia. They also don't seem to like Discount Tire. I've bought tires there twice in the past 8 years (once each for two different vehicles) and both times the transaction was denied and flagged as fraudulent. Holly IN Posted April 21, 2012 Share Posted April 21, 2012 Same thing happened two weeks ago. Two different accounts got hacked. My card numbers were stolen. We caught it right away and our bank caught it as well and stopped our card then another account same bank also got hacked. So it is very frustrating isn't it? Always check your account every single day. We also had all of our account with a max limit so they were only able to steal 1000 dollars in each account. No skin off of my teeth...I was immediately refunded, acct closed, new acct created. For the record, we do not bank online. I am wondering how many of you do bank online. I wish the US would switch to the European model - the card is swiped right at your table and given back to you. It's never out of your sight. We finally decided to open a credit card with a $500 max (that was the lowest we could choose) and use that card for all online purchases. Thankfully, credit card companies are usually very much on top of fraud and catch it quickly. Our credit union also calls us to verify weird activity. I emailed them, went in person and after talking to three people on the phone finally got my money back. My credit card company in comparison was so much more helpful. You can look for the blink logo on the back of your card. Apparently some people have devices that can read these cards just by standing near you.:001_huh: I avoid cards with the blink feature. They made 3 online purchases and one restaurant visit somewhere in Missouri. They spent almost $900.00. Thank goodness I realized it before they completely wiped out our bank account! Are you sure it was hacked? When I discovered this charge on my card, I asked dh. Turns out, he had gone to freecreditreport.com. But, it isn't free. It's a free TRIAL. This exact thing happened to us. We went to eat and our card was used illegally the next week at a local grocery store. The only place DH's uses his card is restaurants.
