the offical Christmas day we wait on celebrate it on New Years Day. The idea was that they would open 1 gift on Christmas day but all other gifts would be bought after Christmas. This would save lots of money. I actually have thought of this before too. What do you all think?

I am an Orthodox Christian and on the "old calendar." This means we do not celebrate Christmas until Jan. 7 which is December 25th on our calendar. Anyways, I love it. The commercialism of Christmas is over and we still get all the after Christmas deals. I have only bought a few gifts and mostly because they were already such a deal. I got some Tegu blocks on yoyo.com on Cyber Monday for 40% off and a balance bike at Costco for $30. Most of the other gifts will wait to buy until after Christmas, plus I hate going shopping right now! Its such a mad house out there!

It's been my experience in the last many years that the sales after Christmas are NOT as great as they used to be, and that the sales before Christmas can be just as good. On top of that, I do Christmas shopping all year long -- always looking for a good gift at a great price -- and I don't think I'd save as much money shopping after-Christmas sales as I do when finding even better prices than those throughout the year. I'd really not enjoy spending the celebratory week after Christmas shopping hard. That's the time we spend fellowshipping with others in celebration of Christ's birth. I do understand your sentiment, but it wouldn't work for us.

Our family does only family gifts and stockings (Santa's only delivery) on Christmas, and then the Three Kings come on Epiphany (Jan 6th, last day of our church's Christmas season) with gifts that are usually larger and fancier than our family gifts.

I can't say that it has saved us a ton of money, but that's only because I try to get all my shopping done before Christmas anyway. I should probably rethink that. But it is really, really nice to have a fun end to the 12 days of Christmas. And it's been great for my husband, because it's easy to take days off from work after the 2nd of January... he tends to work around Christmas when everyone else wants to be off (he's off the 25th for sure every year), and then gets a guiltless vacation during the 1st week of January.

I'd say go for it! :)

Oh- that is perfect. We always get the kids 3 main gifts (plus book and ornament) because there were Three Wise Men.

The past few years have not been super as far as after Christmas sales go. Our family tradition used to be shopping for half priced calendars on Dec. 26th. We used to find a wonderful variety but now the pickings are slim...we've ended up picking some less-than-great calendars.

My inlaws send the kids money for the holidays and they used to really make it stretch after Christmas but last year my dd couldn't find any decent winter clothes- they were putting spring clothes out here and even though winter clothes were dirt cheap, the selection was crummy.

We live where it's really cold until April. It was a long winter.g

:iagree:

Plus the after Christmas sales are always jam packed - it's almost worse then the before Christmas crowd. I never seem to be able to find anything I want at the after Christmas sales - everything pretty much sells out on the first day because they just use up their Christmas stock and don't bring in new stock. If your child really wanted a certain item for Christmas and it sold out before Christmas it is very unlikely you will find it anywhere after. You may have to wait longer then your deadline to get it and it might not be on sale when you do.

This would be great for those years when I find myself saying, "I'm not ready for Christmas yet. I need another week!" Oh, but then that would be every year. I don't think our dc would buy into it, though.

We usually have our extended family celebration some time after Christmas, sometimes on New Year's Day. I considered shopping that week this year, but I remembered how very HARD it has been for me to find anything worth buying in those weeks in the past because of the picked over stock. Last year my MIL gave me a gc to Penney's and I wanted a nice nightgown with long sleeves, knee length or longer. I could only find ONE in the whole store.

One of my extended families always has a celebration on New Years. I used to shop for my name (we draw names) on that side after Christmas to get the sales, and that used to work...but lately I think stores are getting better at not overstocking or something because there's often NOTHING left after Christmas and the sales aren't nearly as good as the pre-Christmas sales. It's a good time to get wrapping paper and Christmas decorations, but pretty much nothing else... I actually buy a lot of stuff for the rest of the year (not Christmas related) during this season because of the good sales. After Christmas I stock up on wrapping paper and Christmas lights and call it a season. :-D

I've had that same thought, as I look at the after-Christmas sales!!

BUT, in the end, I wouldn't do that myself. It kind of is not what Christmas is supposed to be about....and if the end sentiment is just about saving $$$, why bother to mention Christmas at all. Why not just have a "FAMILY GIFT DAY" which could be at any point of the year.

Plus many of the sales after Christmas are not that much different than what I've seen before Christmas, but the crowds are worse.

Sorry but I think its a bad idea.

DD's birthday is at the end of January and for the past few years I've been getting most of her presents before Christmas b/c the deals are better. Target doesn't have its big toy clearance until the middle of January.

Also, this year most retailers ordered less so that they won't have to discount everything so deeply. If the kids want a popular toy or game, it may not be restocked between now and January 1 (and that's before the port in Oakland shutdown this afternoon backlogging thousands of items that could have been in stores before Christmas).

I also would prefer to not set foot in a store the week after Christmas. I used to work retail and its just as crazy as the week before Christmas.

I suppose if the change was made because of some religious reason, the kids would just have to understand and accept it. But to do it just to save money doesn't make sense to me. If all of their friends and your families celebrate the 25th, you would be the odd ball out, per se. It would feel really strange to me.

We already are the odd balls in our family;)

Thanks for all responses! All great things to think about.

I have a friend who works at Target. last year he said they had a whole bunch of stock on pallets in the back and in the garden center. They waited until after the Christmas clearance to pull them out. This was stuff that they had on stock before christmas, but would only pull out small amounts at a time. This way, they only mark down what is already on the sales floor.

I like the idea. One year, a friend of mine and her sisters didn't give gifts until after Christmas. They all went shopping together on the 26th and had a blast. DH and I love to shop the day after, but it is true that some stores have just of good sales before the holidays than right after. I have seen the trend of Christmas-related items and winter clothes being 50-70% off on Dec. 26th, but I was at JCPenney last weekend and most of the same stuff was already 50-60% off. Also, after Christmas things are very picked over. It's still fun though.
