4th grade plans?

Recommended Posts

Did I miss it (the thread for 4th grade plans)? When I search I find threads from 2009.

I confess, I still have holes to fill - specifically grammar and writing - and I feel like this is an important time to choose something we can stick with (especially since I never found it for my oldest).

Thanks!

Here's what we have planned...

Bible: Grapevine's New Testament Survey

Math: Singapore Primary Math

Most of this is a continuation of what we've settled on this year, so I'm hoping it'll all work, at least in theory it should :). Hope that helps!

Here's my hopeful list for our first time through grade 4. Some things we use completely. Some things we use just parts of. Honestly, this looks like way too much, but I'm having a hard time deciding what to cut.

LA

MCT

Daily Language Review

WWE

Phonetic Zoo

K12 Literature

Reading Detective

Dynamic Literacy

Brave Writer - things from The Writer's Jungle and some issues of The Arrow

IEW Poetry Memorization

I'd love to try Kilgallon, but I see my LA list is already so long....

Math

Hoping it will be McRuffy Color Math, but I'm still waiting on the grade 4 curriculum to be finished.

MM, Key to..., Your Business Math

History/SS

Oak Meadow 5

SL D+E

A Young People's History

states and presidents

Science

Oak Meadow 5

I got three of these but I still haven't had time to decide for sure if we'll use them.

This is what I have planned for DS so far. It's not 100% set though. I wish I could find something that combines the kids for science so we aren't doing multiple courses, but I haven't found anything yet.

Writing: WWE 2, Just Write, and Write Source

Spelling: AAS or Apples and Pears

We have a crazy busy year scheduled, but I suspect some things may fall by the wayside as we go through.

History: SOTW Middle Ages

Science: Elemental Science Biology for Logic Stage (starting halfway through the year after we finish what we're doing now)

Math: RightStart D

Grammar: Haven't decided yet, either MCT Island or GWG 3

Reading: Probably assigned readings that I haven't selected yet, but maybe Veritaserum's CHOLLA to go with the Middle Ages study

Writing: WWE, getting our feet wet with Writer's Jungle

Spelling: AAS 1 and 2 (I wouldn't normally do these with 4th, but my younger will be following along, and DD8 never had phonics instruction because she taught herself to read, so I figured it can't hurt either way)

Geography: Evan Moor Daily Geography practice and a few other things I have

Vocabulary: Dynamic Literacy Foundations

Latin: LfC A

And some art history via picture study and music via light composer study (Classical Kids CDs, mainly) when I can fit it in and when I remember!

I may look back next May and  at my plans, but that's what we have on our plates for 4th grade. Younger DD tags along for most of it and keeps up surprisingly well, so she only needs one-on-one time from me for RS A, phonics, and handwriting.

Here's what I have planned so far...

Math: Horizons 4

Reading: BJU 4

LA: CLE 400

Writing: Brave Writer and WWE - just not sure which level (we're restarting WWE from stopping in 2nd grade)

World History: SOTW 3

Health: Abeka 4

plus a spattering of the Progeny Press type guides for more reading

What I'm still trying to figure out...

Science: possibly RSO but more likely Elemental Chem for Grammar

American History: I have no idea. suggestions?

Art: most likely Meet the Masters but still not sure

Foreign Language: we did SSL last year, so I'm tempted to continue with Latin, but dd would be more interested in learning German, I think. But then, we may scrap foreign language altogether...

Needless to say, I'll be keeping up with this thread to see what others are doing.

We had a 4th grade one somewhere, but I am sure I have made some changes since then. Here is what is for sure:

Math R&S 5

English R&S 4

Spelling R&S 5

Penmanship R&S 4 for occasional practice on top of copywork

History/Geography: SOTW4, Complete Books of Maps, and a state history workbook to do at some point during the year.

Science: WTM physics using the list of 5 books, not the 1950s book, and the Usborne encyclopedia. Possibly an additional co-op class

Latin: Latina Christiana I

Art: Drawing with Children, What Your 4th Grader Needs to Know for appreciation

Music: R&S Growing with Music, Alfred Piano, and What Your 4th grader Needs to Know mix

Looks like a lot too, but some stuff we do at different points during the year, not all at once (Like the state history and the music units.)

ETA.. I also have looked at the units for literature that Pata is using. I might print up and try one of those. I am still undecided on Bible. I am thinking about just a read through of our Children's Bible with no additional map work this year, and doing that next year with the ancients. Don't know yet.

This is all pretty tentative:

Math: Not sure... trying out Singapore this summer. Otherwise MM.

English: Excavating English -- I'll attempt to align this with history/literature as much as I can.

Writing -- Mixture of my own materials and other stuff... Focus will be on outlining, summarizing and paragraph writing.

Literature -- Authentic texts from the middle ages; Historical fiction about the middle ages. May add in some literary analysis terms from "Figuratively Speaking"

History: OUP European World, Age of Empires

Science: Continue Story of Science -- Aristotle Leads the way, move to Newton at the Center

Latin: Will probably continue on to LL2 or may enjoy some Minimus again before starting Latin Prep in a year.

Logic: Continue with Balance Benders/Mind Benders and Logic Liftoff (really just for fun)

PE -- Ballet (4x/week)

For now, spelling, vocabulary, and handwriting are all really good, so we'll leave that alone.
