Jean in Newcastle
OK - I just spent an hour listening to Justin Bieber. The quality of pop music notwithstanding, what really bothered me was the constant message of young love and lyrics like "Baby you took me to heaven" (intimating just WHAT?). I need some suggestions for good music that does not have that kind of message for my dd9. I don't mind indulging her love for bubblegum pop even if it isn't my cup of tea. She does like the Von Trapp Children with their mix of folk songs, Disney like songs, hymns etc. Any suggestions?

Dayle in Guatemala
Owl City? My dds like him a lot and so far all I've heard from his is clean and wholesome--I haven't heard every song from him, but, this has been my experience. This particular song was written for his girlfriend who died of cancer. His stuff is pretty good! (even if some of the lyrics are nonsense stuff!) There's always Toby Mac and the others that someone else recommended too. He's amazing! mereminerals
One of 9 yo dd's favorite bands is Hawk Nelson. She also really enjoys Francesca Battistelli and Kerrie Roberts.

Jean in Newcastle
Thank you. We know some of these - Toby Mac and Jump5, for example. But other names are new to me. I'll look them up.
orangearrow
Oooooohh, thanks for this post! I reserved a few CDs from the library for the kids to listen to before we order some from Amazon. :001_smile:
Lizzie in Ma
Same boat here. Peter Paul and Mary are a hit around here but it may be because of the way I sing to them doing housework. :D Jump 5 is one of our 10 year old's favorites too. Seeds Family Worship cds are awesome and more fun that they sound. Some soundtracks too, Mary Poppins, Annie....
MariannNOVA
Pretty much everyone already mentioned -- I have actually stopped listening to the classic rock/top 40 station when we are out driving around -- the lyrics are just, imo, inappropriate for children. I keep the radio on the Christian station - at least I'm not concerned about the DJ banter and the lyric content.
edithcrawley
I second the recommendation of Michael Buble. Most of his stuff is covers of older songs, so they are fairly appropriate. His original pieces are quite appropriate as well, and fairly catchy (Everything and Haven't Met you Yet are two examples)
v-girl
We listen to mostly Christian music or Radio Disney with the kids. That said, DH and I have taken our oldest (when she was in 4th) and a friend to see No Doubt and Paramore.
Stacia
Dd & I love Putamayo cds. Dd loves things like Celtic music, Flamenco, QuinTango, etc.... Edited February 10, 2011 by Stacia
piraterose
My daughter is a little younger, so I can influence her taste still. But what about Broadway tunes. On my daughter's Ipod (it's a 1GB her grandma gave her as a hand-me-down) Full Soundtracks: Broadway Kids (age approp songs sung by little Broadway stars) Annie You're a Good Man Charlie Brown select songs from: Shrek the Musical (I Know it's Today) Wicked (One Short Day, Popular) By request I put on some Beatles songs as well, as well as a Girl Scout CD (obviously my daughter is a girl scout.) Jean in Newcastle
Thank you! We were listening to some of the suggestions today. I'll tell you if she finds a new favorite. BTW - we love Michael Buble - I'd forgotten about him and need to play him on our IPod.
