SproutMamaK
Here's a new book (by a Christian author, though with no explicitly Christian content) that I found for my niece a few weeks ago - she LOVES it. Word is that there will be a series. Terrific Tuesday by Wendy Vale - you'll need to scroll down to find it. http://www.abcorp.ca/gumbootbooks.php

LibraryLover
For an excellent read aloud for all ages, I highly recommend Babe, The Gallant Pig. It's a fantastic book, and one you can knock off in a less than a week. Or even an afternoon. You may want to preview some of these, not everyone is as liberal as I am, book-wise. For 12 yr old to read to himself: The Mysterious Benedict Society The Secret of Platform 13 Ender's Game Greg The Overlander Artemis Fowl The Supernaturals From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiller Witches Matilda James and The Giant Peach Danny, The Champion of the World Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Percy Jackson The Shadow Children Brdige To Terabithia Winn Dixie (considered by some to be a 'girl's' book) Edited May 28, 2010 by LibraryLover

Belacqua
Eleanor Estes wrote some lovely books, including Ginger Pye and Pinkie Pye. They're older books and appropriately old-fashioned (in a good way).

Alicia64
I've said it 100 times, but I'll keep saying it!!! Everything by Hilary McKay. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. Also I like the author Claudia Mills. Also Tomie DePaola's autobiographical books starting with 26 Fairmont Ave. is outstanding. For the younger set, but very interesting. Jen in PA
The Catwings series by Ursula LeGuin is great for the beginning chapter books stage. The Jenny and the Cat Club books by Esther Averill are also nice.
LibraryLover
Gotta put a vote in for one of my favorites The Mysterious Benedict Society :D Diane I was going to add it, but I was on the fence about it being for a 7 yr old to read on her own. Not that 7 yr olds can't enjoy it, but the concept of The Whisperer is a little more 1984-ish, or more 10 yr old ish. ;) The 12 yr old might like it, however. I will go add it. Orthodox6
http://www.sarapennypacker.com/pennypacker-clementine.htm Yes, Junie is a pill, to put it politely. DD received one of those books as a gift years ago. We read it and discussed why it was a waste of time to read any more.
