First of all that room is by no means small. Honestly I haven't measured mine, but hers is probably larger. She should feel lucky to have a room that size and to herself. Growing up I was the only girl so I always had the smallest room. From 5 to about 9 I had a room that was so small the door literally scraped against the bed on the opposite wall when you opened it. My room in the next house wasnt much bigger, but it felt huge after that. Lol I say your house, your rules.

Frustrated with myself and my son
akmommy replied to amo_mea_filiis.'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
Have you had him evaluated to be sure there isn't something more behind the behavior? I would remove ALL privileges including removing everything from his room, but his clothing and bed. Toys, outings, and other fun stuff need to be earned at this point. His behavior is out of control and he needs to know that it isn't acceptable. ETA: just read your sig. I have a friend who's son is CP and he has very similar behavior issues. Has he been to see a pediatric neuropshychologist? It really does sound like you and he need some help with this. -
S/O: First major motion picture you saw?
akmommy replied to Forget-Me-Not's topic in General Education Discussion Board
The first move I remember seeing in a theatre was a double feature: Firefox and Superman. They showed Firefox first and it was "boring" adult male movie. I fell asleep during it and slept through most of Superman. I remember being very upset about that. 1978 -

:iagree::iagree: Yup, my aunts second husband gave me creeps from the moment I met him, I was 11. He turned out to be a child molester. Always trust that feeling. -
What were YOU fed as a baby?
akmommy replied to LidiyaDawn's topic in General Education Discussion Board
This:001_huh: My first teeth were cut on meat bones. Beyond rice cereal she never fed us any baby food. Just mashed up whatever her and dad were eating. -
I saw something today that broke my heart

As a teen I babysat for a woman who left her toddler in her truck while she went to pick up her pay check. She left the truck running because it was winter and the truck caught fire. Thankfully someone in the parking lot saw the truck on fire, and the story had a happy ending. No, there is never a justifiable reason to leave a small child alone in a car!! Just way too many things that can happen in that "minute" you are away. -
how to discuss medical marijuana
akmommy replied to newbeee's topic in General Education Discussion Board
In Alaska there is no penalty, under state law, for possession of up to an ounce cut or six plants in your (your being adults) home. It is illegal however to buy, sell, or transport. Interestingly smelling pot outside a residence is not probable cause for a search warrant. If someone has a medical marijuana card they or an authorized representative can transport it from their providers home to theirs by the the most direct route. There are no "pharmacies". ETA: if your found to be transporting a small amount of personal use MJ they will confiscate it and issue you a citation with an order to appear in court. No arrest. Many law enforcement officers just feel they have more important things to do then locking up potheads all day. -
Well, I really liked the first season with Christopher, but personality wise he is very different from the tenth and eleventh doctors. I do think you should try to start with season one because there are references made later that won't make much sence if you haven't watched it and Jack is introduced.

Would you touch someone else's stuff?
akmommy replied to Ria's topic in General Education Discussion Board
: :iagree: I don't handle expensive items belonging to others without specific permission. Just too many things that could happen to it and then I would feel responsible for replacing it. So yes I would find it odd. I suppose my my reaction would depend on who. A good friend versus an acquaintance. -
Do not move out and leave kids behind! Every case I've heard of the parent that left lost primary custody. Many times here that is all a judge hears before making custody decision. I have a friend who's ex left her daughter behind. When she came back and tried to get custody he had all kinds of witnesses to support his continued custody, but in the end the judge never even heard them, all he knew was that she left without her child. Dad got custody (he was definitely the better choice anyway, but he was surprised how easy it was).

important life skill or not?
akmommy replied to cathmom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
:iagree::iagree: am I bad mom because I quit fixing breakfast and lunch for the rugrats as soon as they were big enough to do it on their own, I still give help where needed, but I think everyone should be able to fix themselves a simple meal. -
With our first father in law bought the carseat the day we brought DD home and I was glad she was a girl because the hand me downs I had were all girly. we did have some diapers, wipes, a crib and blankets, but because we didn't know what we were having and we were broke that was about it. Friends and relations were all waiting until she was born so they would know what to buy. With younger DD we had most everything by 30-32 weeks but we knew we were having a girl and knew several people who had had babies in the previous year so we got alot of hand me down items. DS came only two years later so we still had all the big items from younger DD and we just needed diapers and some boy outfits.

Possibly have one boy name...thoughts?
akmommy replied to BakersDozen's topic in General Education Discussion Board
See Cory just seems so 70's/80's trendy to me. I think most all the Cory's I've known were born during the 70s. That being said if you really like the name then go for it. Someone is going to have issues with every name you choose, but ultimately the only opinions that should matter are your and your DH's. Our son has an unusual but masculine name and believe me we got to hear everyone's opinion about it, but the critics only reinforced my desire to use the name. Lol -
:iagree: i really miss merry go rounds, teeter totters, and tall metal slides you could really get some speed on. When we were kids we lived in an apartment complex with a great playground right across the street from our building until my uncle decided to to make it "safer". The best piece of equipment was rendered useless and I was injured as a result of one of his fixes. I think the softer landing surfaces were a great idea, but i think they've taken it too far.

Anyone ever used one of those Rent-to-Own stores?
akmommy replied to Samiam's topic in General Education Discussion Board
:iagree: with pretty much everything everyone else has said. We rented a washer and dryer a few years ago for a little over a year. When we went to pay it off we still owed more then a brand new better quality set at home depot. Needless to say we called and told them to come get their machines and took our cash to home depot. -
Nope, never worried about it. As a lefty the only accommadation I do really appreciate is notebooks that have glued or sewn bindings, but I can get by without them. The more I think about it the less I like the idea of making a bunch of accommodations or buying special products for lefties. It's a right handed world and lefties are the ones who who have to adapt to that fact. When we go out into world employers and other places we have to spend time and function are not going to make accommodations for us.

Bedroom inspection/searches

:iagree: Mine know that we as their parents have the right to search their rooms at anytime, but until they give us probable cause we choose to respect their privacy. -

I'm a lefty, dh is a righty. All three kids are right handed. Secretly I'm kinda disappointed. I had kind of hoped at least one of them would take after me in handedness, but it was not to be.

So would you want a total stranger
akmommy replied to NanceXToo's topic in General Education Discussion Board
A couple years ago we were at the pool for swim lessons when an older man in light colored cotton shorts walked right through kiddy pool to get out. Light colored cotton becomes quite see through when wet :001_huh:. My mom said something to the male lifeguard, who took the man aside and quietly let him know his shorts were not appropriate swim attire. -
Would you allow her to go?
akmommy replied to littlebug42's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It sounds like you are close with this family and trust them to keep your DD safe. I would allow it as long as I felt my DD could handle being away that long and she understands that you will not be able to just come get her if she gets homesick. I would also spend a little time educating her about the unique dangers of the ocean and if possible send a cell phone with her so she can call home when she feels the need to hear you voice. Go get her a cheap pre-pay phone just for the trip if need be.
