  1. I am ready for summer. Judging by the way she's taking all day over English & maths, ind say dd1 is ready too.
  2. We really enjoyed When You Reach Me, but it does seem to be a love it or hate it book.
  3. I think if you do a search for ' lials' on the board you'll find that the book that's recommended for revision is Lials Basic College Math, and perhaps also some info on the book you have.
  4. Drinking through a straw or using a tongue depressor sometimes helps.
  5. I wish I could say something that would help.:grouphug::grouphug:
  6. The cartoon guide to economics was a huge hit here. dd2 was inspired to draw an economics poster IN HER FREE TIME!
  7. Wwe're covering this now, using Tv/films: All quiet on the western front War horse My boy jack (daniel radcliffe as rudyard kipling's son) Blackadder goes forth The channel 4 website had some good material, but I don't know if it will be accessible outside the uk.
  8. Graphic for the gore, or the sex? What age do you think you might let her watch? Both my DDs are pleading with me to let them watch.
  9. Yep, even at element stage. We've always approached science with a stack of books, youtube, websites, tv documentaries.... I can understand the frustration of thinking you were buying a complete curriculum that would be self contained & time saving and finding it wasn't as complete a you'd hoped, but because of the way my dc work, I suspect we wouldn't even notice the omission.
  10. Just today I vetoed the physics comics from.I think it was physics central. Whiny, mean Girls? No thank you!
  11. Maybe I'm odd, but I've always thought it was a good thing to learn that the answers can't always be found by reading in one book alone.
  12. I like Elmwood Press textbooks. I would explain why, but I have the squabble twins baking.:glare:
  13. As soon as I posted I remembered a book we were given that was like a modern version of Our Island Story, so I went to look for it: The Story of Britain
  14. Simon Schama has written a series of 3 books on the history of Britain, with an accompanying series on DVD. For modern British history there's the wonderful Andrew Marr - again, book & DVD. If you want something less bulky, Kingfisher and DK both do encyclopedia.
  15. I can't offer any advice about the science, since we're using the English approach of integrated science until 14 (or when ever we get there) followed by physics chemistry & biology all done in parallel. I think how successful you are with your idea will depend a lit on how organised you are to make sure you cover everything. My main reason for posting was your comment about your daughter's lack of confidence with maths. I cannot recommend too highly that you read Mindset by Carol Dweck. You can help her to view the challenge of maths as a positive thing to be enjoyed. And hopefully this has also bumped up your post so someone else can offer practical advice about the science aspect!
  16. They're individual, but our ikea bookends hook round the shelf & stay in place well.
  17. Yes, but I had to think about it for a moment. Not all that widely known UK nearly 40 1993 rerun on TV, don't remember the year it was shown.
