  1. DS did S103 (the science foundation course, now replaced by S104), a couple of the short science courses, and Using Mathematics (MST121) and we would definitely recommend them. The course material is excellent!
  2. :iagree: And as for the comment at the end of the article :001_huh::blink::ohmy:
  3. If we're deviating into series, Shine on Harvey Moon is fantastic for this period, and By The Sword Divided for the English Civil War.
  4. There are some really good suggestions here - http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/series/reelhistory The reviews comment on the historical accuracy of the films.
  5. Enid Blyton's 'Adventure' series is a bit more substantial than her Famous Five & Secret Seven. Agatha Christie - don't just stick with Marple & Poirot. The Tommy & Tuppence Chronology are also very good.
  6. :iagree:I find it easier to tolerate recorded music when I've reached 'that point' Don't know why! I find it really hard sometimes to listen to my DH playing when I'm needing to wind down.
  7. I don't know if this will be available in the US, but we tried all sorts of things before we discovered the one that worked - neem & propolis conditioner & combing with a nitty-gritty comb. It also works great at keeping the little blighters away
  8. I've been reading with interest the thread about Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings, which I'm sure we'll look at in the next few years once my LOTR mad daughter is old enough, but it got me thinking - is there a similar resource for The West Wing?
  9. She lost me with Not gripping???:001_huh:
  10. What a FANTASTIC resource! Thank you so much for posting it - I found Our Island Story there, and lots of others we want to listen to. Can't wait to drive somewhere now!:auto:
  11. Our 7 & 8 year olds are loving it. If I'd discovered it when my 16yo was younger I'm sure he would have used it too. Really it depends on your child's learning style. If they need lots of repetition, you may need to either use the companion or supplement with something else. Dry it's certainly not!
  12. Krampf experiements use stuff you'll have already. He's a big fan of ice cream, for example. http://krampf.com Free too!
  13. 8am here in the UK, and the kids are still asleep (late night out with Grandma!) so I'm enjoying the quiet.
  14. I'd put it toward a VW camper & give them first hand experience of the sites of ancient Greece & Rome.
  15. Thanks so much for your suggestions Karen. Now to hunt them down in the UK.
  16. A couple of tumble dryer sheets between the pages always works well for me.
  17. As I've been reading TWTM I've been talking about it with DS, who's 16, and he's really taken with the idea of studying rhetoric. So, I'm hear asking for suggestions! Suggestions which don't involve me also having to study everything (at this stage) are particularly welcome, since I'm trying to study for a maths degree & already don't have enough hours in the day.:willy_nilly:Come November I'll have more free time, but I'd like to start now whilst he's so enthusiastic. Thanks in advance!
  18. http://www.periodicvideos.com/ - chemistry from University of Nottingham, and physics - http://www.sixtysymbols.com/
  19. For more information about UK exam/qualifications http://www.home-education-exams.org.uk/ is compiled by HEers. http://www.cimt.plymouth.ac.uk/projects/mep/default.htm has maths curriculum (free) that cover right through to A level. For theatre, look out for outdoor plays/'promanade theatre'. We're going to see Jason & the Argonauts this summer.:lurk5: If your children are too young to read the broadsheet newspapers (the 'quality' papers) First News is very good, although hard to obtain in a newsagents. http://firstnews.co.uk For older children http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/ is fantastic. The Open University is also open to under 18s studying their courses. Ring and ask to speak to the YASS dept. http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk has some very good value deals on books. Hmm, I suppose I should find where to introduce myself now!
