  1. My new 11th grader has been in an UC based math circle since the 2nd grade. His cirlce has a three year wiat list. To get a better idea about the Berkeley Math Circle, get a copy of : A Decade of the Berkeley Math Circle: The American Experience, Volume I. there is also a volume 2.
  2. Unless this is code speak for a christian/religious college, it is unlikely that most students on any campus will share her views. However, there will be many enough who do on any campus. With a new 9th grader, I would be more concerned that she has the classes needed to qualify for most colleges, and most majors (math through calculus, and the sciences) It is too early to eliminate a good chunk of career options ("but not engineering or computer science. And, not nursing, pre-med, or pre-law"). Also, don't rule out the highly selective schools just yet. As to residential summer programs, if you are interested for next summer, you need to get testing (PSAT, SAT, or ACT) done now for CTD and CTY, so that you can have elgibility determined before year end. Summer class selection starts early January, and the popular class fill up in as little as a week. My new 11th grader has been doing residential programs since the fourth grade, and has been on college campuses in the east, west, and midwest. We regularly talk about dorm life, the campuses, the food, and field trips and excursions to the city. He has come back from each summer program more mature than when he left.
  3. Sorry, did not catch your daughter is a 9th grader. CTD will only allow PSAT 8/9 testing through 6th grade. &th and up take SAT or ACT. CTY seems to be the same. Duke is phasing out TIP. Have you considered just taking the SAT or ACT. My new 11th grader did SAT a few years ago after he had completed Alg 1 & 2, and some informal geometry he picked up in his math circle. His math score was excellent, reading far better than I expected. You can baseline at home to see if it doable. Just tear a couple of tests out of a practice book, and score it yourself.. The projected scores in the Princeton materials were very accurate.
  4. Cany easily sign up for PSAT 8/9 through the talent searches at CTY, CTD, or TIP programs.
  5. Pretty much how it was a long time ago when I worked the same shift at a UPS faciilty outside Boston. It paid 5x the salary of the college bookstore. I was a trailer unloader. Had to unload a trailer in 2 hours. I got fired before the end of probation. Just couldn't get the trailers emptied. I would not recommend working at UPS unless you are in top physical shape. You might want to consider a job at an Amazon SORT CENTER, not a fulfillment center or grocery. I know a bunch of college kids at Amazon, The SORT CENTERS are like UPS warehouses, but a much more relaxed pace. There is some lifting but not for prolonged periods or distances. The kids all quit the fulfillment centers and groceries because of the pace. Amazon pays a miimum of $16.50 across the country. Good part-time benefits. lots of oppotrunities to pick up 4 hours extra shifts. Hiring is all on-line and automated. Pass a simple "sorting test", and an immediate offer is made.
  6. There is an alternate entry by SAT score for those who where unable to take PSAT last year . Othersie PSAT is only test accepted. https://www.nationalmerit.org/s/1758/images/gid2/editor_documents/alternateentry2022.pdf?gid=2&pgid=61&cc=1&sessionid=41f7926b-dbdd-41da-95ca-48d0420714ba
  7. If you want to make the PSAT prep really efficient, practice only using SAT practice materials. When my new 11th grader took the PSAT 8/9 a few years ago, as warm up for the SAT to be taken a couple of months later, he only used SAT workbooks. Then took one PSAT practice test to get a feel for the format a week before the PSAT 8/9. He did very well on both. Now, we are about to repeat the process as he preps for actual PSAT followed by the SAT this Fall. This time for college admission.
  8. Golf, booze, and gambling is pretty much it. But the tram to the stop of the mountain is interesting. There are also a well known "couples" spa in the area. Be aware that the temperature for a typical summer day is at least 109--115 not unusual.
  9. Update: SAT and Act scores will not be considered, at all, at least through 2025 per settlement of litigation. https://edsource.org/2021/university-of-california-must-drop-sat-act-scores-for-admissions-and-scholarships/654842
  10. Thanks for information. But, after finishing college calculus 1 and 2 online, we switched to accelerating the the sciences. He after- schools AP science the year bebore taking the class at school. We just opened AP physic c. It will be completed before his senior year. The end of the road for our after-schooling venture.
  11. It can be challenging, if you are not homeshcooling. In the 11th grader's case, his school will not accept outside credits towards graduation requirements. But even if it did, I could not commute him from school to a college campus for the class.
  12. My new 11th grader has always been 3 grade levels ahead in math ( SAT 730M at 13. y..o), but we never sought acceleration. Be aware that a two level accelleratiion could bite at the tail end. Finishing calculus in 10th grade would mean having to find and take college level math for 11th and 12th grade regardless of whether there is still the affiniity or inclination. There is big plus in not jumping ahead at school. Since all math is simply review, he has 1-1.5 hours of homework time free to work on other subjects or play sports.
  13. Of the low cost/high quality models, Vankyo is the leader. Last night. We set up the 630w model. It is very impressive. About $230.
  14. It is curious to me that arm pit shaving is a discussion. I am in So Cal. Seems we shave/trim everything around here. Been a long time since I've seen a bush at the gym on anyone under 50..
  15. Well, I was on the Morrie Show waiting for the DNA test reveal when . . .
  16. Try simmering vinegar-cleaning strength if you csn get it. Then soak overnight.
  17. My soon to be 11th grader is wrapping up Thinkwell's companion biology. The companion classes are the full college claasses. TW AP just covers material on the AP Exam. TW is an excellent program. The concern about TW not being in tune with the AP exam is overblown. There is nothing wrong with the content. The problem is that the practice questions and tests do not align with AP format. This easily be remedied by taking a few of the College Board' practice exams to get a feel for the format. I know many who have done very well on AP exams after TW. BTW, TW seems to be remarketing it self more as a supplement than stand alone class. but videos and materials have not changed. As to CTY, no experience with biology, but he took AP chemisty intensive on-line last summer. It was a very rigorous course. If biology is like chemistry, she will be well prepared.
  18. Your explanation of how he does it reminded me of Dr, Arthur Benjamin- the Mathemagician, He is local for us. We see him perform around once a year. it never gets old. Your little guy might get a kick. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baxOXLN23GI
  19. I cannot imagine it being anything other than casual chat.. Heck, I had cashiers at the dollar stores apologize for giving a bunch of small bill's because the last few customers broke Benjamins.
  20. If the research academies are like the one at UCSB, the problem is probably not the lack of AP scores, The programs are designed to give high schoolers a taste of college. With all those DE credits, the summer programs might not benefit her.
  21. Best Buy has an Insignia 1.6 cup top load portable washer for $299. Pretty decent reviews.
  22. I grew up in So. Cal. As a teen, I used Sir and Ma'am a lot. Parents of friends and dates seemed really impressed, and the parents granted them more liberties because of my politeness. Professionally, I use the terms a lot in interactions with officals and their assistants,. I address clients by those terms because I am uncomfortable with calling them by their first names, and Mister and Mrs. seems even more formal. As to the 10th grader, I am not a stickler but he does use the terms regularly.
  23. Never been in the military, But have read over the years, several features on submarine food. Submarine food is supposedly the best in the military. A lot of White House chefs have come from sub duty.
