  1. I just wanted to give you our experience. D12 used the 8th grade Texas middle school course 3 text ( I hated it, so busy). I bought the AoPS pre A text. D12 did not like it . She is sailing through Foerster Alg 1. So the middle school text did the job but I would not recommend it. I think the AoPS courses go at a very fast pace. I know my D12 would not be able to keep up. D12 is a decently strong math student but does not love it nor crave a challenge. She is compliant with her math homework but also watches the clock as to not go over on our set time. In hindsight I would have done Dolciani, or Derek Owens. I really like DO videos. Best of luck.
  2. I just applied to your last post. D12 watched Chalkdust videos on youtube under the name "math guy" I think. Anyway, she thought his videos (although excellent teaching) were too long winded. She does not have the patience to sit through them. She is currently working through Foerster Alg 1 and rarely uses the MWB videos. I have to beg her to give them a look. She has seen maybe 3 videos in the first 9 chapters. so I know chalkdust won't work for her.
  3. I gave my 12 y/o D Jacob's Alg 1 text and Foerster Alg 1 . She preferred Foerster I asked her why. She said Jacobs took to long to get to the point. She is impatient and doesn't have the best sense of humor or child wonderness. She is more business like. she wants something very to the point. I am considering using DO geometry and He uses Jacob's geo 3rd edition. So I am not sure how that will go. But we both love DO videos and that is the reason we are considering DO. I also showed D12 Jurgensen and Jacobs both 2nd and 3rd. She preferred Jurgensen because it was straight forward like Foerster. Sadly Jurgensen is not an option as I need DO type videos for it and have not found it as of yet.
  4. Everything I have read is to take PSAT in 11th and SAT soon after and prep in the summer before 11th grade. Some even do it sooner. I would recommend checking out College Confidential. There is a lot of great info there on prep for ACT/SAT/PSAT, SAT II. Best of Luck
  5. I have signed D12 up for WWS I delayed course, I pray it really helps with the PSAT, SAT, and ACT!!!!
  6. I think I would work more on pre A and make sure that is rock solid and then proceed to an Algebra I text what ever that text would be. I would not rush to Algebra I yet. I think maturity and more practice would benefit him.
  7. wind is 2.21 mi/s is the answer for question nine of chpt 11-11 chptr review question 9. hope this the one you need.
  8. I got Jacob's from library and D12 definitely prefer Foerster. She liked the straight forwardness and clutter/distraction free text. I never looked at Dolciani to compare. I don't know what I am going to do for geometry as a live online course is not an option for us. I really, really want Jurgensen but I think it will be too much for D12 to self study with support. And I sure can't help her.
  9. This is the Foerster Alg 1 text I have: Prentice Hall Classics copyright 2006 by Pearson Education, InC, Also Solutions manual by Addison Wesley 86100 is a must Math without Videos, David Chandler is awesome. D12 does all odd problems and all word problems (word problems are awesome). My kid often does not watch the MWB videos and she says the text teaches her so clearly. We will definitely be doing Alg 2 with Foerster. I would say D12 is somewhat strong but not advanced math student. She has not struggled as of yet with the text. I learned of Foerster on this board. So thankful for that. Best of luck.
  10. I second this. The fit has been perfect for my daughter. What are you doing for geometry?
  11. I am still mulling over what to use for geometry. I have heard wonderful things about James Tanton. I see his geometry course is on sale on Great Courses. also see he has an Geometry Vol I text ebook on lulu.com . Anyone have any experience with James Tanton's text or geometry course on Great Courses? This would be used as "afterschooling" a public school kid.
  12. (((((((HUGS)))))))) and Prayers for mommy and baby
  13. Prayers for you!!!!! Get surgery please! ^^^^^^^^^
  14. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with James Tanton ebooks. I would like to look over the geometry but can't find a TOC.
  15. (((((((HUGS))))))) Praying for you and your family!
  16. Question of DO online course. Can one take the course at an accelerated rate. Such as a 'summer math bookcamp" type of pace. I wonder about the grading.
  17. D12 read both of them this summer. She said she would re-read Mockingbird when she is a bit older. She thought F451 was "ok".
  18. I beg you to forgive my ignorance. I have never seen Saxon. I know the private schools around here use Saxon. Anyway, if I may ask, what did your daughter not like about Foerster. My D12 is 2/3 through Alg 1 with Foerster and really likes it a lot. She does all odds and all word problems. She tried preAP with AoPS and did not like it. I do not know how Saxon differs from Foerster or any other text for that matter. prior to Foerster she did pre A with the middle school Texas Prentice Hall books from her public school.
  19. Amazon prime delivered Butler's Translation of Iliad & Odyssey today! I am going to read a little bit every day aloud to my child! Gosh, I learn something from this board everyday!!!!!!!
  20. Sounds great, then we will be taking it (and saving up for the cost) when she gets to that age. she attends public school and starts 7th grade. She will be in Alg 1 this school year.
  21. Oh how I love Amazing Race!!!!! I am not smart enough to be a contestant on that show, but I love watching it!
  22. Going back and forth to sign up and delay till Sept 1 or just wait for next sale as: D12 will not be starting geometry till probably March or April. She has the last 5 chapters of Foerster Alg 1 to start when school starts end of August, but we are slowing the last 5 chapters down because of WWSI class.
