  1. My D is a public school kid in 8th grade taking geometry at school. At home "afterschooling" doing what I posted earlier. So My thinking is that she will not have time to do AoPS precal afterschool before she hit precal in 10th grade. I am hoping she will get through AoPS Intermediate before precal in 10th grade. I think public school homework and afterschool clubs will get too busy to really dedicate much time into "afterschool" math. Right now it is doable because she has minimal homework and no activities. So the question for me is should she go to Foerster precal after she finishes doing all the Foerster Alg II chapter test then go to Aops Intermediate Alg. Will the precal help with Aops Intermediate Alg?? Thank you all!
  2. I don't mean to hijack the thread. Non math mom here. I wanted to ask about aops intermediate algebra, does it have the advanced functions ya'll are talking about? I want D to complete it but don't think we will have time for AoPS precal before she hits Calc in high school. I surely want her to able to go beyond business calc in college.
  3. D did Foerster Alg I then went to Aops Intro to Algebra 2nd 1/2 of book which is Algebra II. She then started AoPS Intermediate Algebra, she got to chaprter 8 and keep saying that it was not sticking. She felt like she was not learning and needed more problems to work. So we back tracked to Foerster Algebra/Trig book. Now she is working through the chapter test. For my D and only my D, I do not think she would have been able to go from Foerster Alg II/Trig to AoPS precal.....But I have never seen the AoPS precal book. We do have the Foerster Precal text. I dont know if we should go to Foerster Precal book then AoPS Intermediate text or back to Aops Intermediate after this Alg 2 review with Foerster.
  4. What does it matter that Alg 1 and 2 are "Classics", I have both of those books too. I also have the Foerster PreCal "Concepts and Applications" by Key Press 2007. D has not started the precal book, but I don't see the problem with using it.
  5. Periods are way way spread out, can't sleep, anxiety is much worse, feel like I walk on egg shells alot of days. Absolutely no sex drive. No hot flashes yet.
  6. Mom of public school 8th grader here. D always been a public school student. We are in Texas I did accelerate d my one year, she skipped one year of middle school math. This put her in Algebra I in 7th grade. Hind sight, I now realize there was no reason to move her ahead in math. Reaching Algebra I in 8th grade would have been fine D has done a combo of Foerster Alg 1, Aops 2nd half of for Alg 2, some AoPS preA, and some Foerster Alg 2. all as an "afterschooler" My goal is for her to complete AoPS Intermediate Alg before or while in high school precal. She did not think Aops Intermediate Alg was sticking (chpter 7 or 8), so we are taking a break and she isworking FOerster Alg 2 chpter tests for review. We will probably then go to Foerster precal and then back to Aops Intermediate Alg. Really not sure at this time. Our school has nothing higher than AP BC. I am thinking she will be strong enough to go from precal to BC in high school and then it will most likely be a nightmare trying to figure the logistics out for Multi/linear alg for senior year with jr college. D does not want to go into engineering, but she is thinking of applied math degree with Stats for masters
  7. Bumping. D is chapter 7 and bogged down for sure with polynomials
  8. So how does one see if Dear child is on track for NMF without all the percentile inflation (every child in our district was required to take PSAT 8/9). So I definitely see this would be useless as a guide.
  9. I have heard the PWN the SAT is an excellant prep book for math.
  10. I have a Citibank MC and have never had a problem. I have had this account for 21 years. They have refunded charges when I did not get the merchandise in time and fought the claims, both I have won. On the stolen identity thing someone mentioned. I place a freeze on each credit agency. So no one can open an account at all. You have to pay to lift the freeze. The freeze hides the credit report so no one can see it. If they can't see it they can't open a fraudulent account on it. I recently changed jobs and the new job has an agency do their background check including credit checks and I failed the check the first time around because I forgot to lift the freezes to my credit could be check. If I plan on buying something on credit such as a car, I will be to pay the 10-12 dollars for each agency to temporarily lift the freeze.
  11. listening, mine took the PSAT 8/9 and wondering the same thing.
  12. My daughter's school had all the kids fill out the registration today. So hopefully the chaos will be limited. She is taking the PSAT 8/9 as an 8th grader.
  13. I just can't tell you guys how wonderful ya'll are. The suport that is given in this forum is incredible. We all want to do the best we can for the kid we have. When would I ever come across the education level of some of our members, I have never met an engineer, mathematician, etc. This is really a special forum!
  14. Thank you for post the link for Kathy's streamline of AoPS. We are definetly in the time suck now. DD13 is starting chapter 14 on Intro to Alg book. I have a question. What if one does not do the challange problems? Or maybe a say 1-3 challenge problems per chapter. D13 is in public school. And this is becoming a huge time suck but she is learning so much with this text, we don't want to stop. She is enjoying seeing that she can in fact do it and that's make her giggly. But we are trying to keep up with public school pacing and she will hit precal in public school in 10th grade. She will work through the second 1/2 of Intro to Alg text while in 8th grade geometry Then do Intermediate Alg chapters 1-16. after she finishes Intro to A book. Hoping this times out where she can do precal Aops text in 10th grade. And be ready for AP calc BC in 11th. But school homework will ramp up next year in high school. I am hoping she can still get a rigorous program without the challenge problems.
  15. My public school daughter did WWS I last year after school with WTM online school. She learned soooo much more than they teach in public school. Best money I ever spent!
  16. Kfamily, I wanted to tell you about us. I had my 13 y/o daughter try AoPS preA over a year ago but she was not interested. After she finished Foerster Alg 1, I had her look at AoPS Intro to Algebra. She found a lot of material that she did not learn in Foerster. So she is now going through the topics and working all challange problems (painfully slow) and even has dipped down in the PreA AoPs text a couple of times. At this time her only complaint is she is so slow with the challange problems. So you might look at it again. Also I would not know how to teach it. The text teaches to the student.
  17. I have a friend who's son made a SI 224 on the PSAT last year, he used KHAN, Erica Metzer, PWN math. I heard to stay away from Kaplan. Good luck!
  18. I don't mean to hijack, do you have your kiddos do all problems in AOPS?
  19. The new SAT is heavy in alg 1 and 2 but barely any geometry
  20. . She can work through the text while taking geometry in 8th grade and Alg 2 in 9th grade. I will order it today!
  21. D13 is a 8th grade public school kid D13 "afterschooled" Foerster Algebra I in 7th grade while taking Algebra I in 7th grade at school. She did great with both. She has been resistent to really try AOPS pre algebra and Intro to Algebra texts (Have them both). I asked her to go through the AOPS Intro Alg text and work on anything she did have in Foerster. She is doing fine with this and not geting frustrated like she has before everytime she try AoPS. Question: Woud it be ok to start AOPS intermediate while taking geometry in public school? I was thinking we could slowly work on AoPS and supplement with Foerster Alg 2. I was not planning on supplementing on formally doing an afterschool text on geometry but using youtube to help as needed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
