  1. We have had to put Foerster's Alg 1 text aside for the time being. As she has started school and taking Algebra 1 in school. I found (through CC) the text " Advanced Math for Young students: A First Course in algebra. This book follows along her public school algebra class right on target. So hopefully we will return to Foerster and do fewer problems after this school year. I have her in the WWSI delayed course. The "afterschooling" was taking too much time. So we had to make some cut backs on math. Her writing skills are not up to par and she needs WWSI more right now.
  2. We are giving WWS1 a try this year for a public school 7th grader and taking the delayed course. Fingers crossed is all I can say.
  3. D12 is in 7th grade in public school, also allergic to pencils.....and I could not teach anyone out of a paper bag. We are giving WWS1 Delayed a try. First lecture was today and she liked Ms. Meyers. I have my fingers crossed.
  4. I am envious of those that get into the live courses, such is the life of an "afterschooler". I was perusing through the WWSI book last night and boy oh boy is this better than what she will get in public school this year. Also I have absolutely no ability or desire to gain ability to teach this.
  5. My D12 is in public school and she is starting the WWSI Delayed class tomorrow. I pray is really helps her. She is a reluctant writer. she is in 7th grade and Texas STAAR has writing test for 7th grade in April. I will let you know if it was worth the 609.00 I paid.
  6. I can't thank you guys enough. I (no math knowledge at all) was worried because she was cruising. Review will be my middle name and game plan for now on! Thank you for again pointing me in the right direction
  7. The college Algebra text I have (D12 won it in a contest) has as it next to last chapter : Conic Basics The Parabola The Ellipse The Hyperbola Systems of Nonlinear Equations Systems of Nonlinear Inequalities The last chapter is Probability I don't know what a thing about math so I could not tell what trig looks like.
  8. D12 has been working through Foerster Algebra I text. I had her skip the end of chapter test because she was going to her dad's for 6 weeks and I wanted to use them for a retention check. So she started back up this week, working through the end chapter test, having no problems..........Then............ She gets to Chapter 5: Polynomials........did not retain that chapter (also that was the first chapter of new material she had never seen before. What to do know? Work through a chunk of problems from Foerster chpt 5 or something else. What does her lack of retention mean? She had finished up to chapter 9 when she left to go visit dad. She never really struggled when she was working through the problems. Thank You, VANURSEPRACE
  9. D12 and friends upstairs still asleep. Me sipping coffee, getting kids donuts then planting 23 shrubs before it gets too hot. Maybe a load of laundry or two this evening.
  10. Should I just have daughter do odd or even questions only through the whole book except the chapter reviews (do all the questions). For Alg 1, she does all odd question except all word problems, but I have read on here that it is fine to do 1/2 the word problems (odd or even). How did your dear children do it Alg II?
  11. the Code Avengers Java Script course looks good also. She is not ready to jump to Java yet.
  12. Thank you, I know absolutely nothing about coding. D12 took a coding camp at UT-Dallas this summer called "Alice", UT-Dallas recommends kids take Java Script before taking Java. I did not know if this is necessary.
  13. Does it require any prior exposure or knowledge... such a JavaScript course first?
  14. Very, very awesome advice, I think I will really reflect on how to complete this. Yes, I have no interest in accelerating. We already did that by one academic year in math to start PreAP Algebra I in 7th grade in our district by credit by exam. I live in Texas and we have new TEKs in Algebra I, geometry and Alg 2, precal this year. I will see what textbooks (as they are new) and compare with the Foerster and see how I can supplement. I just want her to be solid in her subjects and based on 6th grade, not impressed with the lack of rigor from her school. they cover subjects very lightly.
  15. Are you planning on using Foerster for PreCal? If so, does that text have trig in it? Listening.....
  16. I am having a smack down on my over reaching "after schooling" and reality. I am heaping too much on my kid to do as "after school" and need to dial it down. I am embarrassed to ask if geometry supplementation is any less importance than algebra? D12 is working on Foerster Alg 1 and I am adding WWS 1, easy grammar, Spelling to this and all of it to be done after she gets home from 7th grade public school each day. I definitely want her to continue Algebra with Foerster for 1,2 and precal. I am hoping/praying that WWS really helps my reluctant writer became a solid writer. The Easy Grammar is really needed and she is not a very good speller. The plan is to slow the after school Foerster Alg 1 down to 30 mins 3-4 X a weekly depending on how time consuming WWS 1 turns out to be. She will be in alg 1 in public school 7th grade starting in 2 weeks. I am hoping she can successfully complete WWS 1 in 7th grade and WWS 2 in 8th grade. It seems like we will not have enough time to complete full programs of Alg 1, geometry and precal at slower pace. I was wanting to cut down on geometry. One idea is The Great Courses Interactive Geometry program with James Tanton. Do you think that would be a good idea? Or TabletClass geometry.
  17. Once again I learn something valuable from this site. I recently bought Butler's Iliad & Odyssey. I tried to read, but felt very overwhelmed. I have never heard of Audible before or Vandiver. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am going to listen to her lectures first. This site is such a wealth of good solid information.
  18. I am an introvert raised in a large family of extraverts. D12 is a introvert also. She socializing with a pretty large circle of friends at school but never invites any girls to spend the night and makes excuses when as to spend the night at other kid's homes. She has her fill of interaction by the time she gets home from school. She and I require lots of quiet down time. We love that is just the two of us and keep are home quiet.
