  1. Our neighbor kids invite themselves to dinner regularly and I will feed them of my husbands not home, but no sleepovers unless it is my nieces or nephews. Seriously, you could not pay me to have some other persons children sleeping at my house unless it was some kid of emergency. Maybe my kids will be interested in them some day, and then I may reconsider since I would rather have them at my own house but thankfully my kids are really not interested in sleeping elsewhere unless it's a cousins' house. 2. Did you ever find something you liked? I need something to monitor behavior too and so far I haven't found something easy to do in the moment. Thanks! ETA some apps are pretty expensive, and I hate to spend $30.00 without some kind of review. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. I was going to say Grammer Land too. It's pretty funny and in the public domain so free and on LibriVox if you want to listen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I just talked to someone who orders Blue Apron, or some other service like it, and then basically turns that into a cooking class. They complete the recipes together and I think there are some online videos of how to do certain things. It doesn't include baking and you said she is dyslexic, but I don't think there is too much reading in the instructions and then she could watch the online video component. I thought it sounded fun. And fairly simple and you get a pretty decent meal out of it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. I know I have seen that there are a number of parents with children taking music lessons with the Suzuki method. My kids are as well and I would love to hear about people's experiences with Suzuki Institutes if you have gone. What age were your kids and levels when you all went? And any thing else you could share. I would jut like some more people perspective on it. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. We have a presto poplite that is close to 15 years old. I though it had died the other day but it just has overheated and when I plugged it in later, it worked perfectly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. My kids are younger but I would order the next year/level and start working on it. Especially with things like math and reading/ writing. You are not going to get too far ahead and if you get ahead it will open up opportunities later. For science or history you could just do some special projects or special interest activists. Maybe outdoor nature stuff since it will be spring. Field trips to historical places of interest. Math curriculums often have a built in review at the beginning of a level because they assume the child had a summer vacation in between levels so yes, you could get ahead but it will give you more time later to go deeper or, when things get more challenging, you will have extra time to spend getting the material solid. 8. Anyone tried Neuromotion? I just got an email from them after being on their waiting list and I'm trying to decide if it is worth it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. For many parents and children, school is free daycare. I say this as a former teacher and the child of teachers. I am not trying to bash teachers in anyway. Why are most kindergartens going to full day? It not because children benefit from being in classrooms all day long. It is because children need care and in many families, there is not a parent available to care for them. With 30 kids (or more) in a class it is hard to differentiate instruction. If the child is fairly quick on the uptake, she could probably come to school 1/3 of the time and be fine. It is discouraging and very sad for all students, especially those without involved parents who engage their children intellectually at home. Enjoy the homeschooling! 10. That seems outrageously expensive. It is overnight right? But 4 nights? That's crazy. Do they have financial assistance or scholarships? I would never spend that much. I'm sorry though for your son. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Wow! It is also gross and bizarre to me that she would share her drink with your son. I mean sometime kids will pick up other people's glasses but an adult offering their drink to another person's child is just weird. Why didn't she get him a clean cup? I totally share my glass with my child but I would never share my glass with another child unless there was no other way for them to get water and some emergency situation. 12. This is what I do all the time. I freeze PB and J as well as cheese and pickle and cream cheese and olive and they are all fine when they thaw and then tend to keep the other food cool. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Wow! Doesn't sound like there is any relief in my future. I can't fall asleep or stay asleep and I have children that wake me up at night. I don't do any caffeine unless it is before noon. I have relaxation exercises that i have on my phone that I can listen to and that sometimes helps. Sometimes I run them several times a night. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. My son is 7 and we are currently 2/3rds of our way through RSD and we seem to be going through almost two levels a year. We previously tried MM and Singapore and they did not work out. We like RS and we like the manipulatives. We usually skip the games because he doesn't need the extra practice. We are using Beast Academy 3 as a supplement and going through that should slow us down a bit. I don't think my son is gifted but he does work through math at a steady pace. Anyone else accelerate RS? Anything else I should look at or consider? Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. How difficult it would be to move in 3-5 years really depends on your spouses specialty. Yes, it doesn't take a lot of work to establish a practice but so much depends on the area of practice and your location and the location you want to move to later and whether you are employed by a hospital or a private group. 16. Have you lived someplace really cold with lots of snow? I think it is hard to know how you will do, until you have experiences it. But I know the pain of Med school debt. Also, as far as SAD. A really cold snowy place wouldn't necessarily be worse than a moderate rainy place (such as the Pacific Northwest). I lived in super cold and snowy place but really in the winter there were lots of really bright sunny days. More than there are in my current rainy town. Although if you are up in Alaska, the days would be considerably shorter and I would invest in one of those special lights. The other thing is, you've been living frugally for a while I imagine so if he gets well paying job and you continue to live modestly, you can pay down a lot of debt in a short amount of time. And then move in a few years if it is really hard. My husband used to regularly tell me of jobs paying 2x or 3x as much in far off place and I would tell him forget it. For me, being close to family is nonnegotiable at this point and that is a higher priority than weather or money. I also feel like I've paid my dues following him around the country for 10 years of medschool/ residency. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. I don't know that mom throwing up necessarily means kids are sick or contagious. My husband gets stomach bugs and the kids don't get sick. The kids get stomach bugs and I don't get sick. And if I kept everyone home if one person was sick, we would rarely be able to go anywhere. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Wow! Where do cities plow the sidewalks? You don't have to answer, but I'm super impressed. My city doesn't even plow the streets when there is a foot of snow! And I have lived in the NE US where there was tons of snow and now sidewalks were ever plowed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. I try to stick to things that are not crumbly. Like string cheese, apples, meat sticks, clementines. But you gotta do what you gotta do. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Since he had had thirty hours of driving with you, a few more hours with an instructor might help to give you some perspective on whether his driving is outside of the range of normal for a new boy driver. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. Stressful I'm sure, but really not out of the ordinary for a brand new driver. He needs more time on roads with no other cars or people. ETA: I would also enroll him in drivers ed and have someone else driving with him for a bit. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. What grade it this? This seems unreasonable at the elementary level. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. I have healed my diastasis recti with The Tummy team. They have programs online at thetummyteam.com. If you have a flexible spending account or health savings account, I think you should be able to use that. Also, I found everyone in the office to be really helpful and kind. They have many clients that have had 4, 5, 6 plus pregnancies. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Thanks. This is helpful to know. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. Just trying to figure out if their curriculums are religious based or not. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
