  1. just saw the above message... not a waste of time at all! this is THE admissions thread i like to read as it's easy to read all in one fell swoop. and i recall seeing these the past many years too as i've read them! please keep it going! (i hope i didn't sound offensive above - i'd just love to see them listed by state and was just thinking outloud if anyone had the time, interest and inclination to do so) ;)
  2. Yes thank you! Wondering if anyone is willing to list these acceptances by STATE as well? I think it would be great to know where all of these colleges are, which state - esp those of us trying to stay in-state or closer to home. ;D I would offer but I'm afraid I have no time... Just thinking out loud.
  3. SVOHS is awful. we tried spanish semester 1 for $50 or $100, whatever it was. it's a compilation of varied videos around the web. our experience - it is shoddy. videos weren't even very well-culled, all over the map, no rhyme or reason to it. definitely not going to learn much doing it. we looked into it b/c it was then a-g approved (no longer), for UC schools. but not worth it imo. ymmv if you're looking for a get 'er done class esp if not spanish.
  4. we are doing center for lit now and don't like it. 1x/mo discussion is just not enough. and for my son in particular, it's not enough of a drive to compel him to read - not enough accountability. if i had it to do over again, i'd choose waskolit or whatever the name is. we use their comp classes write@home and they've been nothing but great. plus they have a great money-back guarantee and center for lit is non-refundable. so for us, it was a waste of money. ymmv. we really liked the toy speed shakespeare intensives this year (meets weekly) but that's not amer lit....
  5. and wondering if those taking PAH AP Macro and/or PAH AP Micro used prep books? 5 steps to a 5 sounds like a winner!
  6. we are currently in pah micro and took pah macro too. from past experience, 'we' (my ds) does not self-study well. while macro he loved, he seems to like micro well enough and think it's set up with book reading/videos/labs/closed quizzes to help him learn the material.
  7. Last minute, after planning for Maya Inspektor for the past 2 years, we opted for Kathryn Walker and are thrilled! :D I think we'll have a great year.
  8. We need some ideas to help teach the basics of US Government. Elementary level is great. A book with pictures that I can teach from perhaps. My kids need to learn the basics. Any ideas?
  9. I say good for you! I never thought we would outsource but time & circumstances change, so it works for us. But it sure would be cheaper not! ;D So good for you!
  10. We also plan to do DO Hon Physics for next year too (11th grade ds strong in math). This just b/c he will be concurrent Calc and I think AP Physics C should wait until after Calc. Your reviews and thoughts on DO Physics are great. I'm still feeling good about my curriculum choice for next year, but also hearing about its math-heaviness, thinking it also won't work for my next in line. Thinking Clover Creek for her. Great thread - keep the thoughts coming.
  11. Back to the topic at hand.. We have decided to enroll in WTMA Biology w/ no lab. We love Mrs. Upperman, and although they've changed texts, they assure me it is still up to SAT II standards - so we'll plan to take SAT II at end of course. Will supplement with at-home labs as needed. Thanks for everyone's insight!
  12. That's what I was talking about originally. I had thought I remember learning that. :-) We're California and likely UC-bound, so there's the rub. LOL.
  13. ok freesia - so i got the book. which are the most pertinent parts to read? i admit i don't have the time to read it cover to cover. what's the most important parts of the book to look at? i am intrigued by it...
  14. thanks for weighing in. i sure thought i recalled that about california. ;-) we do plan to sat II and AP out of them all.
  15. we've decided to likely go with their Bio WITHOUT lab - and supplement with labs at home. we only need/want 4 science credits through the high school years total. we can't add on another 1/2 credit class that would meet a 3rd day per week we can't ever afford a class that pushes $1000 - that will never happen
  16. thanks everyone for weighing in! we've decided we may go with WTMA Biology without lab - and add labs at home. We just found a local lab teacher that comes and does labs at home (called labrats or something) for really cheap. dissections and the like - so that plus home-based labs should fit the bill. thank you so much for your thoughts, encouragement and setting me straight regarding labs at home. :)
  17. Most colleges require 2-3 years of Lab Science in your high school years. So we were thinking Bio, Physics, Chem (in whatever order) and probably adding in a 4th year for rigor's sake. Most sciences offered online are 'Lab Science' for a single science credit. And i know there's still debate over whether colleges even accept homeschool 'lab sciences' anyway so it could even be a moot point transcript-wise. Here is my quandary. We had planned to use a combination of the below classes (so far) with various kids: WTMA Bio Clover Creek Physics Derek Owens Physics Chemadvantage AP Chem etc. Up until next year, from what I understand, all of the above were Science w/ Lab. Great! But WTMA has changed their sciences to separate their science classes and labs. So that now adds both more time & cost (you meet 3x a week if you include a separate lab + the cost is $650+$325=$975 - for 1-1/2 science credits). So long story short (too late - sorry!) 1. Do we continue with WTMA with NO lab (can't afford nearly $1000 for a single class and can't devote 3 live days per week to a single class) and just call it Biology w/ Lab on our transcript - by adding in labs on our own? 2. Or do the above and just call it Biology on our transcript - and do the same for the others "Physics" being physics, "Chemistry" being chemistry etc and just not specify lab or no. Do transcripts even specify lab or no lab - does it even really matter? 3. Or do we scratch WTMA and find a different provider (maybe Open Tent?) that includes a lab in the price/class? Help!!!
  18. We only need 1 annual credit for science each year. So paying $975 is too much for what could be done for a single credit course (we don't need 1.5-2 credits of science per annum). Still debating... as we love Mrs. Up, but we can't make a science+lab work either timewise or financial-wise. So we'd have to make the choice to go non-lab only, and that just may not be worth it. I'm weighing options. A shame as we ADORE Mrs. Upperman!
  19. do you know if blue tent prepares you for sat II biology test? how does blue tent work? i understand it is asynchronous, not live? how do the students learn the material, how does it work? we've been burned by 1 asynchronous class but like 3 others... so wondering what makes blue tent work? (counselinggirl-you can weigh in with english experience, i imagine the format may be similar? we are thinking of it for my rising dd#2 9th grader) we had planned to go wtma bio all along, as my son loved it. but text is changing next year (we already have holt) and no longer includes labs so no lab credit unless you pay another $350 for the extra 1/2 credit lab. 1.5 credits science, sounds like overkill.
  20. hmm. i hadn't seen this and here we were in the process of signing up for science 9th grade. we already took biology last year - and it was a single class that included labs. so it's changed? no more labs in the regular biology? that's a little over the top to be separate as like said above, it seems like padding transcripts and many schools don't really 'accept' online labs anyway so hate to pay extra when it's debateable it's even a slam dunk for admissions. eta: wow, just looked it all over. can't believe it's not science+lab any longer. clover creek does it. that's too expensive 650+325 (975 is ridiculous!!!) for single bio credit (whether 1.5 credits or not)- we don't need 1.5 credits for science, but it does need to be science+lab for 1 year credit. i may reconsider using WTMA at all - as we were only using for science anyway. oh! and saw they changed the text for biology. i thought to use my son's holt text again. glencoe is $150+ text! that's pretty cruddy too. UGH. back to the drawing board
  21. we took AP-CS A in 9th grade with no programming experience. (He dabbled very little in codeacademy/scratch) Son is strong mathematically, and found it not too difficult a class. He enjoyed it well and scored well on the AP exam.
  22. thank you freesia! just the inspiring story i'd like to hear. we're at 15 1/2 here. doing good, probably in the grand scheme of things, but difficult at times nonetheless. gaming is an endless problem for us - we too have severe limits. and we have no interests really right now either - except the things that must be done (volunteer, etc). i'm happy to hear there is a light at the end of the tunnel of teenage-hood. :D i'll look into that book. i'm glad to hear others feel the same we do.
  23. no it is. we found someone taking this here on the boards. :D we plan to take it next year.
  24. shows here that yes AP-CS A & AP CS Principles are, i'm pretty sure: https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/details/4679/
