  1. I've read through many back threads about how many colleges your kids have applied to... some say 2 or 3, some say 10, 12, 14. One I think said 18. I am so curious as to what your list looked like? How far you cast your net from home, etc? If anyone wants to share, I think it'd be interesting to see. :-D
  2. We've decided to venture into the realm of teaching our own AP HUG class, thanks to a great syllabus found here on the boards. They rely on videos from the Annenberg Learner series, called Power of Place. We used these 2 years ago also with PAH's APHUG class. But now those videos have been discontinued and cannot be found. Anyone know where I can find them - or what they are using instead (either self-study or via PAH maybe)? Thank you!
  3. so i'm creating an account after following the create a practice acct link... and yes it looks suspiciously like the same real accounts. so do i register as a First Year Student OR Parent or Other Adult? i figure i'll go with bogus email/info too - so what's the best way to do it?
  4. Hi Hive! Thinking about next year and LORs. We are looking for a good choice from a teacher... (have a good community one related to volunteering/goals/etc). Was hoping we'd be able to ask Mrs. Stublen at Wilson Hill, as he'd be taking his 2nd year in a row with her this year - however she no longer teaches there. ? So now I'm thinking Derek Owens, as my mathy son is taking 2 classes with him this year - AP Calc AB and Honors Physics. Questions are thus: 1. Anyone have experience with DO penning LOR? 2. How does he get to know my kid when it's online video-based, and he seldom has (yet) a question to email etc. What can we do to help him know my son? It's early yet - we could start that get-to-know-you process now! LOL. 3. Any other thoughts for alternate LOR writers for us - he's currently taking (live) PAH Eng Lang with Kathryn Walker - she has a small class, presumably she'll get to know him well... (live) PAH Comp Govt with Julia Reed... but neither of those are particularly his favorite or strongest subjects. I Know Mr. Moskaluk from PAH AP Chem last year says he keeps a file for future LOR, but my ds took the class in 10th grade... LOVED AP Macro with Howard Richman, but not sure if he does LOR and again that isn't live and it was also from 10th grade. Anyone's thoughts? TIA
  5. care to share here or by pm what that looked like/how formatted? i'd love to see! ☺️
  6. Corraleno - I thought those were your dc's activities and I thought oh my goodness, how can we compare?! LOL. Thank you for that link and info re: Common App, most useful! Lori - Already read all those threads before I posted - that's where I got that sample I linked. Great thread! Thank you as always! I hope WTM is paying you... they sure ought to!
  7. I'm reading about Activities resumes... thinking of starting this now as ds is a junior. To include ECs, awards, volunteer/paid work, etc. Anyone care to share theirs (a scrubbed version)? I've really only seen one sample online and don't know what it should look like. PM me if you don't want to post publicly or point me somewhere online! ETA: This is the sample one found in motherlode links: https://admissions.appstate.edu/sites/admissions.appstate.edu/files/yosefresume_0_0.pdf Also if anyone just wants to share list of ideas to include in an Activities Resume... things I may be forgetting, tangential things, I'm all ears :D
  8. thank you! is the pretend app only open til a certain date? also to ask another dumb question (rather than looking it up myself...) when do seniors apply exactly (assuming not EA, i think)? is there an app open & close date?
  9. Can I do a common app pretend application? Son is a junior - just thinking ahead to next year and don't know the details of the Common App, it all sounds like the great big unknown to me. Would it behoove me to play with a pretend application? Can I do that? If so, can someone walk me through that a bit? I don't honestly even know where to begin...
  10. My ds took the SAT II Bio-M after WTMA Bio class in 9th grade (they then used Holt). I don't know how much of the book they used, which chapters, but it aligned just fine except he had to read the anatomy chapters on his own. And then in Apr/May, do focused prep with SAT II Bio book(s).
  11. Here's what we did. I had my oldest (now a Jr) take the PSAT locally both 9th & 10th. Both times he took it cold - having only taken a practice PSAT in the weeks beforehand, so he would know what to expect. It is fantastic standardized test experience with no risk. The 9th/10th grade scores are not provided to universities. It is great practice for upcoming AP tests, SAT II subject tests, the SAT/ACT in jr year, the real PSAT in 11th grade. For $20 or under, it is worth it. Now m 2nd (9th grade) will follow the same path. First is going for NMSF this year as a junior - he's in the running. 2nd (9th) is going for experience. Totally worth it - if ANY standardized testing are in your future. Early hour, the possible anxiety of testing outside the home, etc etc - nothing compares to a real live dry run. **ETA - we have found this year in particular that you have to start really early to get a PSAT spot - like in the summer, maybe June... we barely got in by the skin of our teeth.
  12. Anyone willing to share a blurb of their School Profile showing the Educational Partners section? ?
  13. we are taking this now. my ds loves it! says it's far better than our previous live class format over at wilson hill that we switched from.
  14. Love to see any updates from others taking FundaFunda last year. How did it go? Did anyone take the SAT-Bio - how did that go?
  15. thank you for this. i too would never have found it. are you following the pacing guide? what week are you on? we start week 2 next week - just finished first quiz friday. since you seem to know more than me, can you just humor me... how much is auto-graded, and how much/what do i need to grade on my own? i am used to their AP CS-A where it was all done for me. can you clue me in? .?
  16. thank you yvonne! sounds perfect for us. and yes this is for next may, but since it was nigh impossible to find a testing site, we almost opted not to take the class.
  17. OP - what Ellen /mcHenry units have you tried and liked? We used Carbon Chemistry/Elements last year for 6th and my son loved it. Can't figure out where to head for 7th.
  18. Following - as we start Edhesive Stats this week. Freesia's ds took it last year - she would know best.
  19. i think your schedule sounds doable, of course depending on the kid. it does usually take a month to settle in and get used to it - that's how it works for us. it always starts out hard. we did drop APUSH last year one week in, as the workload seemed too much. it overwhelmed my ds. we swapped to a regular USH class instead.so it may be just dropping off one class will do it if feeling overwhelmed. (we loved ap macro and took the subsequent ap micro, so i highly recommend those!) we also use HSA - try to schedule live classes earlier if you can to get them out of the way... my ds took ap macro with PAH last year. we got into a groove, probably an hour or so a day (more in evenings for gameplay). i also did (and still do) write up a weekly planner parsing out what to do each subject, each day. that helped my ds. i think helping them organize helped oodles and starting those live classes early worked well so as not to eat up too much of the school day.
  20. for us, my ds is a junior. he is all outsourced at this point, as outsource works best for him. we try to balance b/w live & asynchronous. ENG - AP Eng (LIVE through PAH, meets Mon 1x a week MATH - AP Calc (ASYNC through DerekOwens, asynchronous. Watches videos, has a syllabus to follow of videos/homework/tests) HIST - AP Comp Govt (LIVE through PAH. hasn't started. but meets weekly 1x a week) SCI - H Physics (ASYNC through DerekOwens, same as Math above) SPAN - Span 3 (LIVE through HomeschoolSpanish Academy - meets live 2x a week) ELECTIVE - AP Stats (ASYNC through Edhesive, starts next week. Asynchronous, videos, assignments) Plus we are doing tons of SAT prep too. Trying to do 1/2 a day to raise score about 100 points. Here is what our weekly schedule looks like: Mon - 8-9am AP Eng Tues - no live class Wed - 8:30-9:30 Span Thurs - 7:30-8:30 AP Comp Govt (I think) Fri - 8:30-9:30 Span the early live classes work well to get them out of the way, then he has from 9-9:30 every day until about 3-4 to finish everything else. Should work w/o much need for late afternoons of work or weekend work (unless there are labs/tests, etc)
  21. can you share what exactly you signed them up for? i guess that's the question, how it all syncs together. also what your daily live class schedule looks like. M-W such-and-such time, T/R such-and-such time.
  22. yes this worries me. i guess we should have cancelled the 3 before the 2nd test was taken. we decided to scrub AP Govt from his transcript for 9th grade, and he retook the class in 10th grade. (know that he barely gave it the time it required in 9th, sloughing it off, and so did a very concerted course of study for it in 10th grade to correct mistakes). so it will show NO AP Govt for 9th grade on his transcript - and only show it as a 0.5 credit for his 10th grade year. does that matter if i can't cancel/delete the first score?
  23. I know you can do this. But how? Anyone successfully done this? It seems this is the link: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-score-cancellation.pdf My question is also - if this is the form, how do I make sure the correct test is cancelled. (My ds took the AP US Govt test in 9th grade, got a 3, so we decided to re-study and take the exam and 10th grade and he got a 5. Can I delete only the 3 from 9th grade? Should I?) Thanks!
  24. Hi Yvonne! Tried to PM you, but I can't. Arcadia told me your boys took their AP exams at SIL last year. Trying to find out how your boys liked their experience at SIL for the late-testing AP exam. PM me or just post here... hope you see it! In a nutshell... After about 20 no's to find a school who would administer the AP exam for Comp Govt, when I was about to give up finding a location, finally, finally SIL said yes and to the late-testing date as well (my ds has another AP test same day). Woo-woo! It is an hour and a half away for us, but it will be the noon slot, so not too bad... and my ds should be driving on his own by then, so maybe I won't even have to drive him! Ah, just when I thought I had all this standardized testing stuff down. First trouble with finding a spot for AP Comp Govt and then being told no to our same PSAT location for my son's junior year (after having taken it there past 2 years)... The hoops we homeschoolers have to jump through - it never ends!
