  1. No, no. Anything will do. I'm happy to hear all your kids' interesting reading publication material! And I'm mostly looking for print publications as we need more non-computer time. ;-) Thanks!! Great insight. I'm thinking holiday time and some subscriptions in the near future.
  2. Title says it all. Love to hear what others' high schoolers have enjoyed in the way of magazines or newspapers to read up on current events or whatnot. Thanks!
  3. I admire you guys too! So far, we're high school outsourcers too. We homeschooled 'old school' everything from K-8 (except 1 math class beyond my capabilities in 8th). Then once we hit 9th grade, at least for my oldest boy, it became clear outsourcing was the way to go. Which was never really the plan, but ended up working for us. It was two-fold for him: 1. He adheres to outside accountability. It was too much nagging/arguing to get him to get anything done for me. 2. Being UC-hopefuls, we need to fulfill a-g requirements by multiple SAT IIs and AP exams - which personally for me - is easier to outsource those subjects to ensure full comprehension of said subject. Next dd in line does not like outsourcing nearly as much, so we're going to try to do more at home. But with many littles still fully homeschooling the 'old school' way, it's just nice to also to be able to focus on the youngers and know the olders are getting so much from their outside classes, requiring less effort/time from me.
  4. I'm sorry you're having troubles. Have you tried talking to any of the school principals, especially in your school district, to see if they can especially accommodate you? Sometimes that might help, someone from higher up - rather than going through the lackeys that administer the AP exams. Also you could make an appt with the superintendent of your local school district too... they can be really nice. Last year, we found one local high school (not our school district) very open and helpful to hosting us. But they only offered 2/3 that we were looking for. Then we went on a search about 1 hour radius to find a school to host us for the last. I emailed everyone I could from the AP ledger that showed offering the test, and I got quite a few positives back. Many private schools, mostly.
  5. And agreed, 14 is young. We struggled last year with the lazy bug and work ethic for 9th grade. Now my ds in 10th @ 15 is better on that front - really it's worlds different. Hang in there, and do what will keep your dd smiling and feeling confident!
  6. I think you can continue and just do the course without relation to grades, etc. They issue a grade report at the end, but it's not like it's official or anything you would submit. If you are using them as simply an online provider, you likely would never submit a transcript from them anyway. So her Geometry grade would simply be yours to tally. I would talk with the teacher and ask her if it's OK we continue, but at our own pace as she's so far behind, it's either that or we drop the class. And I've paid for it, so I'd like to continue in a more 'audit' fashion so we can have access to your lectures but do it on our own. If she can't answer that, reach out to the head of administration. They can likely work with you. It's not like you're asking for money back. There's no such thing as a W for an online provider, when you don't submit a transcript. You will have just used WHA Geometry as one of many tools/materials to teach your at-home Geometry course. And math is so important that you don't want to scare her off of math or make her hate it. You'll likely never turn her back, and she'll forever feel insecure and inadequate about it.
  7. We did WHA Geometry and like dereksurfs said, this was for my mathematically-inclined kid. My dd will continue on with Jann in TX's Myhomeschoolmathclass for Geometry. No way can she handle their level of rigor. That said, he is still using WHA for Pre-Calc but it works really well for him. I have dropped classes both last year and this year. This year, because I saw it was a bad fit and my son would be drowning (we dropped early by Sept 1) . We lost a little money, but it wasn't too bad. WHA has a pretty strict refund policy, so keep that in mind. DON'T feel bad about dropping a class. If it's making you & your child miserable, drop it - find a better alternative. My ds was so happy when we made our change (swapped APUSH for regular USH), and isn't that what it's all about! Don't make school onerous in 9th. Keep it manageable, enjoyable. That's the beauty of homeschooling. You have more freedom and flexibility.
  8. My son likes the meetings, no doubt. I just know -for him- with 0 weekly accountability to read (he reads Shakespeare for Roy Speed b/c there's a class each week), CfL is a hard one for us to make work... so far. Maybe it will get better. It's too easy to slough off until last minute (like Mom classes), and then he doesn't have time to finish the reading. And then, I, as mom, am annoyed we're wasting money. LOL! I might try WaskoLit on for size in the future, as I know it's also very similar and well-regarded in its own right. I think in hindsight, I'm liking the idea of 4x monthly meetings for about 4 sessions per book, as opposed to 1 2-hour session per book. We'll see for future siblings... :-)
  9. It is live, Wed at 8:30am PST/11:30am EST. But recordings are readily available for all sessions, and live meeting time is not required. They did do one meeting where they recited some Shakespeare lines, which was fun. But otherwise, you get a lot out of just listening to recorded sessions.
  10. We are currently in (and finishing up) Romeo & Juliet. It's a great class. We would like to continue with Macbeth & Hamlet, but we're already in Center for Lit (which I am unfortunately finding to be underwhelming so far, as it does not require enough accountability for my particular ds - only meeting 1x a month/1 book per month. So in future, I think we'd go with WaskoLit - 1x/wk discussions with weekly keep-me-accountable quizzes. But no refunds for CfL, so I digress.) (But both those are likely available as Lit classes you may be able to jump into for spring semester and maybe pay prorated amount. You could ask. CfL discussions are good, we're just finding monthly isn't quite enough accountability) I highly recommend Roy Speed. It is really great! I understand though that Macbeth is a bit step-up from R&J and he does recommend going through R&J first before so you may want to check...
  11. My son loved that class! He also took it through Edhesive last year in 9th grade. Very thorough, I thought. He got a 4, no previous programming experience. For him, it was about 1 hour a day or so. That includes videos and assignments. But he enjoyed it immensely. Mathy kid.
  12. OK I checked after this thread came up... We do PS #1, PS #1 then PS #2, PS #2. Weird how that worked out, eh? LOL!
  13. off-topic, sort of. but how does your ds like clover creek physics? is he a strong mathy kid or more in the middle? wondering for my dd next year... ;)
  14. Yes I know about Kernion's Physics-Prep course, Mark. That's an option as well. But goodness, I can't even find any who have taken Kernion's class through PAH, much less his own Prep course. LOL Kathy - thank you as always. Most insightful regarding Physics sequence. He will have had 0 Physics experience and concurrent with Calc AB. We may just opt for the Physics SAT II using Giancoli (maybe through DO)...
  15. Thank you! I never thought of this. I really like WHA for math... so like to stick with them. I keep pestering them to offer a BC option. Your idea sounds like an interesting option. Figure I can ask her nearer mid-end of the year, once she has a gander at my son's abilities/performance thus far. Math comes easily for him - he could very well be in AP Calc now (10th) but I didn't know back in middle school that we could go more at his pace and held him back probably a bit more than I realized. Dabbling in Pre-A forevvvver... LOL!
  16. We did this last year. No problems. My ds took first AP at PS #1. Then the next 2 at PS #2. So when he finished his first AP at PS #1, they said if you're not taking anymore AP exams, then keep your book. If you're taking more AP exams, turn your book in. He just took his, so he could take it to PS #2. We're all set for this year - 2 schools again. Make sure PS #1 knows you're taking your booklet with you. Make sure PS #2 knows you've already taken an exam at a different location. That leaves me thinking. My son is taking 4 AP exams this year. What if they are not in order (PS#1, PS#2, PS#1, PS#2). Interesting. We may be ferrying our student booklet with us everywhere, LOL! Guess I'll go have a look & see.
  17. ok then maybe i don't have anything to worry about. thanks for weighing in, snowbeltmom. yes next year his APs are more rigorous (AP Calc, AP Eng Lang, AP Stats) so really i was purposely not adding in an AP science on top of that, ideally. but i would still like to do my research thoroughly before deciding yay or nay. anyone else with thoughts/suggestions re: above and/or reviews of PAH Physics? still love to hear.
  18. I understand this and told my ds the same. Physics C caters to a self-selecting student, just like you said does Calc BC (and even some SAT II tests - hence skewed curves). We're looking into *possibly* adding AP Physics to next year's line-up. As this year my son has 4 APs. Next year, we have plans for 3. But I'm afraid going from 4 (10th) to 3 (11th) will look like a decrease in rigor. Eek! Will it? What have I begun? I had been planning to ease his schedule with DO Hon Physics and then taking the SAT II test following that (he is applying UC - so needs AP/SATII score verification to gain 'a-g' approval). But now I'm worried this might look like a decrease in rigor. He will be taking AP Calc next year. Likely AB, as we like Anne Stublen through WHA - though I am sure he could handle BC. So I'm just browsing AP Physics options. I've heard a mixed bag about Lanctot, some love him - however it sounds very glorified self-study, and we did that last year through PAH, and detested it - can't do it again. So I understand Kernion has videos, 2x monthly chats, etc. I figure there must be some WTMers who took the class last year! Anyone? :)
  19. Title says it all. Interested in anyone who might have taken AP Physics 1/2 or AP Physics C with Jack Kernion last year at PAH. I see that his class average AP exam score was 4.6 for Mechanics / 5.0 for E&M / Physics 1 = 3.6 / Physics 2 = 3.7 I'm sure some WTMers took the course last year.... or maybe taking it this year. Any reviews/experiences? Post here or PM me if you'd like!
  20. so far, we like AP Chem. And we loathed our first asynchronous PAH AP class last year. so we were extremely hesitant about PAH for this year. my ds is taking AP Chem and AP Macro and loving them both and really, really learning. i think part of what's so good about AP Chem from what i can see, is that there is so much that has gone into weekly work that keeps them on task and helps them learn. there is an extensive outline to print alongside the textbook reading. there are outsourced videos every week (multiple) that ties into the textbook reading. there are homework assignments that really bring it all together and makes them think and work on all they've learned. all that together, plus the ability to ask Qs on the discussion board (or straight from Mr. M like my ds likes to do), has made it a great learning experience thus far. so far, so good for us. i feel he's learning as much as he did in WTMA Bio last year (with 2x weekly live lectures). crazy but true!
  21. 6th - IEW SICC-A then SICC-B 7th - IEW SICC-B (finish) - then unknown 8th - IEW Elegant Essay / Speech Boot Camp (and trying semester of Lively Art of Writing as EE continues to not be my favorite, 2nd child in)
  22. But if you hadn't been accepted at the UC schools... then those course descriptions would maybe have come in handy at any alternate schools applied to. :-) Maybe it's what pushed them over the edge to acceptance at the private schools. So not wasted, just a lovely safety net.
  23. For my 9th grader, we started with 0 experience. 50 min lessons/2x a week. He's learning an exceeding amount. They go at his own pace, which for him is ahead of schedule - so he completed his high school credit in less than a school year so I got to roll the extra hours into this year (10th).
  24. We're on our 6th kid starting with A. The oldest 3 have graduated RS from RS A-E (we opted not to use RS-G, even though I had it and started it). One's in PreCalc, another in Alg I, one in Pre-A. I have chosen for my 4th, this year, to skip check numbers entirely. It serves no purpose except a nice little trick to check your answers. But none of my oldest 3 ever used this in their journeys, so safe to skip.
  25. Don't we file Oct 1-15? That leaves 2 more days to file, right? Boy this month got away from me, I almost forgot!!
