  1. We have long planned on taking DO Hon Physics next year for my ds' junior year. Now after a change-up at WHA for AP Calculus, we are thinking of trying DO's AP Calculus as well. Anyone have experience taking 2 Derek Owens courses at the same time? Manageable? How did your kiddo handle 2x DO videos, etc... Or if you only ever took a single DO class at one time, how do you think your dc would have liked 2 simultaneously? TIA!!
  2. ... well then, that begs the question even more to raise prices from $150 to $550! for us, my mathy kid, the programming came pretty naturally. and he had very limited experience. he got stuck from time to time, but always found the answers he needed on the discussion boards. i did not help a whit, and he pulled a 4 on the exam (and this was when he was not a great standardized test preparer). i would definitely have another of my mathy kids take it, but not the not-so-mathy ones - that's for sure.
  3. all similar $495-550 - really pricey! is it the homeschoolers' lot that every course wil end up being $500-800? it's a shame not to have some cost-effective options (for those whose kids thrive on outside providers/accountability - as unfortunately homegrown classes at this stage *do not work*)
  4. yes we had leslie smith for geometry. my ds didn't love her. but he has thrived on live math classes for 3 years now, so i'm bitterly disappointed that we have to consider a switch. so just like to hear more about the other options out there. derek owens sounds great, as there are lectures, albeit recorded ones - whereas PAH may be a bit too asynchronous. my ds will also be taking honors physics with derek owens. (his younger sister took physical science so we are familiar with his style). is the possibility of 2 derek owens' classes simultaneously too much? more feedback please! anyone else thinking of changing plans this year post-stublen? (funny, it was the one class i hadn't yet registered for, as the class was filling slowly, so i was putting it off... almost an omen really)
  5. I want to bump this back up. Anyone else with experience - specifically with Derek Owens or PAH for AB? Love to hear details!! We had planned to take our 4th straight year at WHA and take AP Calc AB with Mrs. Stublen, but she now is no longer teaching AP Calc there. Her replacement is Leslie Smith. So we're looking for options.
  6. oops i forgot his alg 2 class... added it! dolciani for alg 2
  7. We have used Dolciani Pre-A for 3 kids now. Ours is a 1992 version and does have the ch 12 stats/probability. We just completed ch 12 last week for my 6th grader, and I had my 8th grader who finished Pre-A last year tag along, as she didn't have time for ch 12 last year. It was a really, brutally light intro into statistics/probability. I was able to go over main topics briefly in 2 days. So you can easily add that in on your own. Biggest new material is factorial (!), but otherwise nothing terribly new. So don't sweat not having this chapter in your version is not a big deal. Here is how Dolciani Pre-A prepared us: DS Rising 11th grader: Dolciani Alg 1 at home, Wilson Hill Geometry (Jurgenson), Wilson Hill Alg 2 (Dolciani), Wilson Hill Precalculus (Larson), next year AP Calc AB --super strong mathy kid - A's in all DD Rising 9th grader: Alg 1 (Jann in TX), next year Geometry (Jann in TX) --not as strong at math, but gpt A's in Alg 1 this year under Jann in TX's nurturing tutelage DS Rising 7th grader: just completed Dolciani Pre-A - will plan to follow DS1's path.
  8. i find that ledger list to be pretty thorough. if they're offering the class, they are giving the exam. that's how we have found ap exam locations nearby
  9. We love Ellen McHenry. My 6th grade ds swept through her Elements & Carbon Chemistry books this year and loved them. I showed him her other offerings, and he seemed especially keen on Rocks & Dirt to begin 7th grade. I see early reviews about its non-secular-ness (I don't think I totally care; I'd prefer secular, but for us, this is meant as a gentle intro to high school sciences that's independent!) I also see early reviews about errors in plate tectonics or something like that. Anyway, anyone try it? Anyone like it (or not)? And if not, what other McHenry offerings are good post-Chemistry for 7th grade? ? Thanks!
  10. we've taken it in both 9th & 10th so far - dry runs, so to speak. great especially for homeschoolers, imo, as it's a cheap test and good to get them used to sitting in a classroom/auditorium with a bunch of other kids bubbling in answers. that whole standardized testing thing that for many of us, is new. and we couldn't call until fall (september) but don't be alarmed if one says no. keep trying.
  11. thanks for link. i missed that thread and now it's like 3-4 pages back!
  12. thank you! i'm assuming this is the link https://www.tomrichey.net/ap-european-history.html we're thinking of trying this as an honors euro hist class. then take a sample AP exam and see how we are to decide whether to go for the ap exam or not. anyone else done ap euro solely with these suggestions as a homegrown course? **i ask because we've never done a homegrown ap course for exam. lots of outsourced ones though AP Govt, APHUG, AP CS-A, AP Macro, AP Micro, AP Chem... But his materials seem pretty thorough, that I think we could follow it well.
  13. my ds couldn't take his at our local high school either. in fact, i called 3 nearby high schools, all said no. called a local private school, said no. finally found a small private christian high school to say yes.keep trying. and just because the psat test is hard to find placement, these same schools were all more willing for AP exams. so don't fret. also, SATs and ACTs you sign up online and anyone can take - so again that's not an issue there either.
  14. this is to what i was referring - if you could point me in the right direction? i am interested in this homegrown possibility.... as to your frank candor, always appreciated! i'm one to share whether positive or negative as i always would want to know another user's experiences.
  15. can you point me in the right direction, cuckoomamma? i might like to do that for ap or honors euro history. we've been trying to figure out what to do with world history credit for next year. does anyone have experience with a homegrown, cb-syllabus approved ap euro course? (is homegrown ap euro doable to prep for ap euro exam?) *edited - i don't need an ap credit. an honors credit would be good though. we were looking at acellus (thanks to satellite's suggestion) or big history project, as both are a-g approved. but the a-g status isn't totally necessary for me. just a good fairly independent-minded euro/world history choice. acellus examples seemed boring as all get out. not sure i can get my ds to follow through on those. big history looks intriguing but a bit less history, a bit more science...
  16. cuckoomamma - What was your dd's work/outsource experience going into AP Psych in 9th? I see PAH says it's recommended for 10th-12th, so I was hesitant to jump in for my rising 9th grader. What else did your dd do in 9th? I too hear rave, rave reviews about Mrs Gonzalez and definitely want to jump one of my dc in!
  17. LOL! Thank you Lori but I need Glencoe specifically... Closeacademy - I would love to know if you have it. Thanks!
  18. we've taken 3 classes with wha - geom/alg 2/pre-calc. he's used his tablet twice ever (that's in 3 yrs). so caveat emptor!
  19. so will google search no longer work? Is it b/c your pages have new URLs and have not been re-indexed by google? i see your search works better now. i will try that. i am just used to using google search and site:forums.welltrainedmind.com and really like the format of what i find. any thoughts? thanks.
  20. School is ending... let's start a fun thread! I like to read reviews about curriculum, classes - both good & bad. So how about sharing your personal hits and misses this past high school school-year? Be candid! I'll start... AP Macro (PAH) - HUGE hit! Was gun-shy after a less-than-stellar experience with PAH last year (AP HUG), but we decided to give it a go anyway. Soooo glad we did! Amazing class. Highly recommend it. Great organization with weekly chapter reading, videos, questions/quizzes, essays and the games! AP Chem (PAH-Chemadvantage) - Another HUGE hit! I was skeptical about how well you could learn something as meaty as chemistry asynchronously. But Mr M. puts an amazing amount of work into his class, and my ds couldn't have learned more or been more prepared for the exam. We'll see when July comes. Pre-calculus (WHA - Stublen) - Hit! Great class, and my ds learned a ton. It's our 3rd year of math with Wilson Hill and they have a particularly great math curriculum. AP Micro (PAH) - Wasn't sure whether to self-study or not. But decided my ds needs outside accountability. My ds learned well, felt confident going into the exam (after pointed prep work too). A get 'er done kind of class. Nothing earth-shattering. If he gets a 5 though probably would have other kids take. US History (WTMA) - Miss. We didn't realize the way it was set up, and it didn't suit my ds well. No tests/quizzes/memorization, just weekly (lengthy) written summaries of that chapter's weekly readings. A little concerned how my ds will fare on next week's SAT II USH test. He will be prepping hard. Only 1x weekly live discussion - not sure enough. If I'm wrong re: SAT II then my opinion changes - LOL Center for Lit (Brit Lit) - Miss. Total miss. 1x monthly discussions, a single 2 hour discussion not enough accountability for my dc. We take outsourced classes for both wealth of expert knowledge and accountability outside of me - failed on both counts. Waste of $400 Roy Speed Shakespeare - Hit! Fantastic 10 week lit on Romeo & Juliet. Wwanted to take more but no time. This is how to make an engaging literature discussion class. Homeschool Spanish Academy - Still a winner. My ds is learning fast, but it is getting pricey. He sailed through Span 1 last year, had extra credits for this year. Got bogged down this year and so now have to add more credit hours to earn the full Span 2 credit. But will continue next yr Span 3 and hope to stay on track. AP Govt (Thinkwell + Text) - Can't beat the cheap Thinkwell price. We combined Thinkwell's (rather dry) videos with text reading. Jury's out til AP exam results are out. Wouldn't suggest taking next year as next year they change the exam... so I'd wait a year. Forget the text name but got the supe recent version with 2016 election. Write@Home (Essay Workshops 1&2, Lit Analysis Workshop) - Hit! We really like W@H. Great feedback from coaches, multiple revisions on same essays. You have to go in knowing the basics of how to write but does help refine. Excellent customer service too! Reason we'll take their Lit class in future (Waskolit) instead of CfL. How about you? Give us the dish!
  21. bump - anyone taking PAH APUSH with Richman next year and wants some books? Take them off my hands! ?
  22. I'd buy an AP Calc book if anyone has one to sell... probably RootAnn and I both. ? Text & solutions manual.
  23. We LOVE AP Macro at PAH. Just finished this year. My ds's favorite course. He now wants to major in Economics. Thinking of trying to be a TA there next year. We also took the 1/2 year PAH Micro. This was a more get 'er done course. I can't say my ds felt he 'knew' the teacher at all, or had any real interaction with him. He thinks he did really well on both exams, felt well prepared, but did feel that he probably could have self-studied AP Micro esp with the acdcecon.com videos/review packet. This is what I'd always read - AP Macro at PAH is an amazing course, not to be missed. AP Micro was a get 'er done course, but a little more 'meh.' Just my 2c.
  24. Thanks for the a-g link. I was looking up 'acellus' in UC's ucop list - and couldn't find it. thank you! Thanks also for the PM. I think we might look more into it. We're not looking for AP. A get 'er done type of class. We're already heavy with 4 APs and Hon Physics next year - ds needs a breather for his world history requirement...
