  1. My kids love them. We just finished Cameron Townshend (began Wycliffe Bible Translators) and will pick up another one tomorrow. On Fridays we don't do our normal Bible curriculum. We do a verse quiz and then read from one of the Christian Heroes books. Takes us a while to get through a book, but that's ok. I agree with the other posters that it's not Pulitzer Prize winning literature, but it's fine. It's interesting and inspiring and keeps my kids attention.
  2. I use stevia to sweeten almost everything.
  3. Pretty sure we are. Going from Cental Valley California to Salem, OR for a family reunion, but we're making a vacation/field trip out of it. Since we're studying California history this year, we'll likely stop at Sutter's Mill (where gold was discovered) and a few other historical places. We'll probably stop at Lassen Volcanic National Park and Mt. Shasta. That won't be till summer, though.
  4. I always tell my friends right off the bat, "I will not call you , but that does not mean I don't like you. I just don't call anybody."
  5. I hate talking on the phone. I'd rather chew my arm off than make phone calls. When I agree to be on a committee at church it's always with the caveat "I don't make phone calls." So, for the second question, I rarely am on the phone. And I do not have a smart phone. I have a basic cell phone with a cheapo-deepo plan. And I use it for emergencies on the road or for texting.
  6. I don't think they were terribly expensive candlesticks, though it does say "crystal" on them. But what do I know? Maybe I'll take the out of the box. Yes, our church does have a yard sale in the spring, but I'm not sure how much $ they'd fetch there.
  7. What do you do with this stuff? 8th grade graduation dress (my mom made it) 3 crystal candle sticks Decorator items I'm not using now Jesse tree Christmas banner I made several years ago, it's nice, but we haven't used it yet I just have all this various and sundry items that are cluttering up my life but I just don't know what to do with. I don't really want them, but..... Can't quite get rid of them.
  8. My boys are in the middle of Latina Christiana I and Prima Latina. Does anyone know of any material that is about that level that can be used as supplemental worksheets and stuff? I know DS2 will be done with PL before the school year is over and I'd love it if he had some worksheets or something (nothing too heavy) that he can use to just keep it in his mind. Also, for DS1 in LC1, I just feel he needs more work with translations than the workbook is giving him and, although I can make up worksheets, it's a lot of work for me. It doesn't have to be put out by Memoria Press, but just something at about that level that can give them a little more!
  9. I dress up as a sign of respect to God. I wouldn't go on a job interview or lunch with the President in jeans and flip-flops, so why would I go worship God in casual attire? If someone came in our church in jeans, no one would think much of it. We are actually a pretty conservative church, but we have a lot of different types of people there.
  10. I'm sorry. I finally found one I really like. It's tough.
  11. I'd send some kind of low-maintainence, but pretty plant. When my Grandma died, my mom got several nice potted plants and it's nice to see them and remember Grandma. Another idea (probably not for your situation but maybe for another time) is a tree. My one girlfriend had a couple of miscarriages and for each they planted a nice tree or shrub in their yard in honor of the baby. But a memorial tree for any person's death, I think is a neat thing.
  12. We've been once with our kids, 2 Christmases ago. We will likely go in 2014. Our kids were relatively young when we were there, so we were in the park 2 full days. That was enough for us. It's expensive and we are pretty frugal. Plus, I want it to be a real delight when we go, and if you do something a lot it loses its delight, IMO. So, in 2014 our kids will be 4,5,8,10 and 11. We'll probably stay 2-3 days.
  13. I'm not hugely into poetry myself, but I've been having the kids memorize a poem and month and we memorized "Five Eyes" by Walter de la Mare. What a fun poem to memorize. The more I familiarize myself with his work the more I like it!
  14. I don't see why they wouldn't still be good.
  15. My dd sometimes has this trouble when she has allergies. We give her Claritin and Vicks and it really seems to help.
  16. I replied "other" because my answer would be "covered with enough salsa, cheese, bacon, sausage, guacamole and everything else to hide the taste, because while I will eat eggs on occasion, I do not like them!"
  17. I'm so sorry. I color my hair to cover the grey and that with a cut costs me $60 and 1 1/2 hours. I have never in my life gone an entirely different color. Well, hopefully.... she's learned something.
  18. yes. I logged on to our bank account (we have direct deposit) and gasped. then I e-mailed dh and asked him what was up and he told me it was the ss tax thing. And then I went to our budget in Excel and started cutting. You know what ticks me off? When we get a pay cut, we have to cut. Our govt. doesn't seem to think that concept applies to them.
  19. Me too! But, I'm sure you feel a lot better now.
  20. Clothes - I reserve the right to approve of church clothes and if we're going somewhere where it is important to look "put together". Otherwise, they can wear what they want. If they're going out, then I'll let the peer group take care of fahion issues. I'm thinking if they get laughed at enough for mismatched or weird clothes, that'll make them change. Hygiene - DS refuses to wear deoderant so he must shower every day. We supervise teeth brushing.
  21. Fortunately, we don't. I have a cousin who is quite wealthy (married well), but she is so gracious. They have a beautiful home and yard and she entertains often and is the most down to earth person I know. When she has the family over she's very unpretentious and doesn't make anyone feel bad. If I were you, I'd just smile and maybe even go along with what she's saying. "Yes, that is a lovely couch. Your multi-million dollar vacation sounds wonderful. Tell me about it!" It would definitely disarm her and take away whatever power she perceives she has due to her financial situation. There's got to be a reason she's making catty remarks. Probably to make herself feel good, or something. There's always a reason.
  22. When people (or I have to write down my occupation) I say, "I am a homemaker!" because that is what I am. I like the way Dr. Phil put it once referring to his and his wife's roles, he said, "I make the living and my wife makes our lives worth living" or something like that. OK, maybe I got it all wrong. But, it's something like, maybe he brings home the money, but the wife is the one who creates the home and sustains a homelife that is nurturing and all that stuff. You know, it sounded so much better when it was a vague concept floating around in my head.
