  1. Not Alte Veste, but my daughter is currently in the class. She is not interested in STEM at all but usually does decent in math. She absolutely loves the class and Jetta. She is a perfectionist dealing with anxiety and depression but the way the class is set up is enormous help in dealing with it (no time limits, two tries on the quizzes). The class is very thorough and detailed, I can only highly recommend it. Edited for grammar error
  2. Guess where I live and they don't ship :sneaky2: . There are actually some items that we need. Sooooo, what does one do? Right, one asks a good friend who will be moving from Japan to Hawaii to pick up the stuff in the store and have it shipped along with his stuff because they have plenty of space in their allotment. I think I need therapy.
  3. None of us except for my hubby can wear polyester and be happy. We all get uncomfortable, itchy and sweaty.
  4. My son spent 10+ hours on any Lukeion class and about 5 hours on the WTMA literature classes when there is a paper due but often less. He is a fast reader though with a high ability to comprehend and analyze pretty much any text quickly. He took Latin 2 and the Muses in 9th grade and Latin 3 and history in 10th. He did WTMA Medieval Lit in 11th and Early Modern now in 12th.
  5. Nah, what keeps me up at night is "Mom, I swear there is no solution to this polynomial. If 2*3 was 6 it would work out perfectly but it just doesn't work with 5" :banghead:
  6. I just bought a bag of cod filets at Costco. The bag says 32 oz or 5 portions-8 oz. Hm, okay. I further investigated and learned that 5 portions weigh 36 oz. (keeping significant figures, it was actually 36.33 oz on my scale) Should I be happy that I got more than 32 ounces or peeved because I did not get 40? I was either sold 13% too much or 10% too little. I think we will be eating more cod in the future so I can see how other bags stack up
  7. "Same procedure as every year". We put up some cutesy decorations, make some cutesy cookies, read a scary piece of literature a la Frankenstein, Dracula or some such and watch Scooby Doo and the Adams Family. My youngest son will probably hand out candy on Halloween and that's about it. The kids went trick-or-treating when they were younger wearing cutesy costumes.
  8. The exact same thing happened to my daughter when she was five. I took her to the ER, they checked her out and could not find anything so they send us on to a neurologist. She was diagnosed with abdominal migraines.
  9. We just bought a front loader Samsung from the Scratch&Dent isle for $400 a few days ago. I am usually in the Miele/Asko washer segment and we only bought this because currently going to the laundromat is not going to happen within the next few weeks. I have only done a few loads but I am pleasantly surprised. I will probably keep it around once my washer gets here. As it has only been less than a week, I can't really attest to its reliability.
  10. I can relate. My current senior has nothing to recommend him other than a decent AP score. His outlook is that of course he will get into his first choice (state school) and if not,he will start at the community college,so what. The issue is that he is interested in Computer Science which is a highly competitive major here because the department is small. I have tried to push over the years to no avail. There is only so much we can do.
  11. The s190,s700,s4 and s5 series are made in China meaning the plastic parts are made there. The motors for all models are made in Germany. My first Miele lasted 15 years and I am hard on my vacuums. They fall down stairs, are being used outside and in the garage and my preferred way to move them is by pulling on the hose, the cord or kicking them into place. The last one broke when I ran it over with my car. My current one is 7 years old and doing fine. We have pets and it has no problem with the hair. Having said that,I always buy the most basic model made in Germany for a couple of personal reasons. I don't like the thinner plastic in the China made ones (actually I hate plastic to begin with) and I prefer to buy products made in my home country. As far as reliability and efficiency, I don't think the China made ones are any worse. Edit:I have the C1, costs about $300.
  12. I don't know,I never got that far. I tried to sign up with them but the system would not accept our address. They were less than helpful so I decided if this was their version of customer service, we would be better off with another provider.
  13. I think it depends on the grader. I have currently 3 kids in two different classes and response times are very different. Geometry takes the longest and has the most "not received" assignments. My daughter's Algebra1 is usually returned quickly, my youngest son's slower. Sometimes my daughter's and my son's assignment are mixed up and my daughter has had a couple of incorrectly graded assignments. When I e-mailed Derek, it was fixed the next day.
  14. In my case the Xanax did not help because I became very drowsy and could feel my heart rate slow down, I mean really slow down and if there is one thing scarier than a fast heart rate, it is a very slow heart rate. I was sure it would stop beating altogether which set off another attack. Being wrapped up in that feeling of terror but not being able to react because my body was so slow was the worst feeling I ever encountered. I eventually fell asleep and had horrible nightmares. The next day I was still drowsy and altogether not quite there. It would have helped if they had told me at the hospital why they gave me Xanax but I was just told to take a pill whenever I needed it and relax. I tried to ask but they had no time to chat because next to me was a guy who had been shot and next to him was a gal whose husband had bashed in her head so I for good reason wasn't high on the priority list.
  15. With a panic attack I would absolutely go (and have gone myself several times) because I had no idea what I was dealing with. I had the constant feeling of imminent death (never mind all the other symptoms) and honestly in my state I was sure they just overlooked something. It took repeated visits to different doctors to convince my mind I was fine. I had no stressors in my life, it came on very suddenly so the whole "Just relax" didn't work for me. It took me years and several doctors to figure out what the problem was and deal with it. Panic disorder is just plain horrible.
  16. The first time I went they sent me home with 30 Xanax pills. I took one -- never again. From then on I was pretty much on my own. I went to a cardiologist who found nothing. Went to GP's who said everything was fine and I just need to relax. Several doctors later I came upon one who listened and was willing to run a number of tests. He sent me to an endo and a nephrologist but thyroid and kidneys were in great condition. He ran a blood panel which I was told turned didn't show anything either so lastly he referred me to CBT. CBT helped to control the symptoms but did nothing to deal with the cause. We moved, saw a new doctor and after she listened to my complaints she asked if vitamin D had ever been tested. I told her I thought so because I was told a complete blood panel had been done before. She insisted on testing anyways and the results came back quite low. I was prescribed 50,000 units a week for three months and the change was remarkable ( also helped with my hair loss, apparently it's a rarer side effect of vitamin D deficiency). A few months later I started to work out with a personal trainer and apart from the exercise, he suggested that every once in a while I should drink a glass of an electrolyte but particularly when I sweat a lot. I did and between the vitamin D and the occasional glass of an electrolyte, my panic attacks are entirely gone and my heartbeat has gone to mostly normal. When it rises, I drink some Gatorade and it calms down. My trainer said that in middle aged women electrolyte imbalances are common and that is the easiest way to deal with it. The exercise has helped regulate hormones so overall I am rather chill these days. The panic attacks and the constant feeling of imminent death were awful, I don't wish that on anybody. Obviously there is a variety of causes for a rapid heart beat and panic attacks so this is just what happened and helped in my case.
  17. I voted never because hubby is never home during "normal" dinner time. We eat dinner rather late so we can eat together (between 8 and 9).
  18. It depends, hubby is on active duty. Right now we pay nothing (Tricare Prime), when we get back to the States we will go back to Tricare Standard. Then we will have a 150 per person /300 family deductible, and 25% copay after deductible is met. Hospitalization is $848 per day or 25% of billed charges plus 25% of separately billed services. Outpatient surgery is 25% after deductible is met. Catastrophic cap is $1000 per year.
  19. If a post that to me is made with tongue in cheek causes sadness and anger, I see issues deeper than a mere reaction to a post on social media.
  20. How is your posting to convey your feelings different than other people posting to convey their feelings?
  21. I'm nearing 50, no grey hairs yet.
  22. Just on a side note, if he wants to learn to write, I would start him with Hiragana and Katakana before Kanji as they have fewer strokes. Yes, stroke order is important so should he decide on writing, make sure he does it correctly. There are many youtube videos aimed at young children so that may be a place to start. I absolutely second living in Japan
