  1. In case I don’t see the thread again my dc’s are early 20’s but we used MP’s Logic series and were totally happy with it.....fwiw used the Latin too. I am wondering if it’s because they have full packages now but no idea really.
  2. I adore a couple of the girls my kids grew up with. I would love it if DS eventually married either of them......I married the boy next door so totally believe it is possible. No likely matches for Dd among the friends. I suspect we have a few years.....
  3. @NeginSending more hugs and prayers to you and your family. I am so glad you were able to go and support your parents who I feel so terribly bad for. I wish you had been able to actually visit longer with your brother........ I haven’t gotten much reading done this week as the great clean out continues. Dh has made many trips to the tip, which is a giant council ran recycling center. We also finally had some sunny days and have been out enjoying them. Today was Whitby..... everyone went and we were able to go on a short boat tour. I loved looking at one of my favorite book location from the water......reminded me of Dracula. 😉 The Rumor https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43168384-the-rumor was a the type of book that after you are hooked reads very easily. It’s been on some summer beach reading type lists.......the rumor starts that someone in their very small town is the notorious murderer x who committed a horrible murder as a child and only served time as a juvenile. The town goes a bit crazy a that point trying to figure out who is the murderer. My other finished book is the latest in a favorite Seanan McGuire series, The Incriptids. That Ain’t Witchcraft wasn’t my favorite in the series but I did enjoy it. There was a novella on the end that I loved that is also part of the series. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39077187-that-ain-t-witchcraft My Ds loved that book at about 13. I want to add I somehow missed the fact that you have Lyme so sending hugs your way. The well dressings are actually displayed quite awhile, the ones in Bakewell went on display last Friday and are scheduled to be there until next Sunday I believe. Who knows how long they took to create. They are done on trays of damp clay so things stay moist. I imagine they mist the display daily if the weather is warm. Dd and I were on the flower arranging team for the village church for several years and proper care meant we could keep arrangements going for close to a month if the weather cooperated. I took a short class with the kids years ago where we worked on a pretend well dressing and I remember it as fun, reminded me of cross stitch in terms of type of detail work and the filling in. One thing to remember is the majority of these displays are done by village experts.....their families have been doing these for centuries. I suspect their gardens are planted so they have the perfect purple in bloom when they will want it for the well dressing etc Each village has it’s own traditional week end and it is possible to go around viewing many well dressings over the summer.
  4. Thanks for the review. I know I saw the cover go by this week and didn’t look at Magic for Liars because it didn’t look like a book I would like but I think my Overdrive has it. I will request it next time I go to the library site. Let me know what you think of River of Teeth......saw this somewhere but perhaps just a review. I don’t think I want anything to do with it if the hippos are scary. I LIKE hippos....... a bit off subject, We went to visit my favorite otters recently and all their chatter now worries me, especially since they liked something we had on(we think it was dh’s hat) and seemed to hang out and “ talk “with us as we walked by their area. We know they do tricks for people wearing visi vests.......they apparently look like giant fish (the zoo staff wear lime green). 😂
  5. Since this week’s thread is almost over I am going to add a bit of Brit Tripping type info to it. This is the time of the year when villages in Derbyshire’s Peak District celebrate with Well Dressings. https://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/whats-on/well-dressings. We used to go to the church service and exhibition in a friend’s village when the kids were little. We took a drive to Bakewell today and discovered the Well Dressings and a Morris Dance Festival. Here are a couple of favorites...... Eta......the blue and grey work around the exterior is part of the picture so clay with flower petals, moss etc.. all natural elements.
  6. In my part of England libraries are spread throughout the borough with a very small disjointed part of the collection in a small library, hopefully close to you. Many of the libraries are ran by volunteers so we now have strange hours of operation, some I have heard are down to 2 hours a week. Fees are paid to move books within the collection unless you are under 16 or an OAP.....can’t remember the age, it could be anywhere from 55 to 68, the computer does it. So putting a paper book on hold costs 25p. I have cards in three boroughs. Needed them because one can only check out 10 books per card and we used libraries extensively while home ending. I decided to give up my volunteer roles a couple of years ago partly in prep for spending more time in the States and partly because I still believe Librarians should be paid for their work.....at least one person in each branch should be paid! One of my cards still has paid librarians system wide and I go there now. Libraries are free in England but the reality was I probably spend £3 to £5 a month when I am actively using them. I also use a free to me library in the States. I love theOverdrive and when I am there I love accumulating a good stack of books and not paying fees.
  7. Sorry, I know the feeling. The friend in my life has been doing this weird you are our dearest friends one minute then can’t be bothered the next. I think we finally are done. I am sad but it’s been exhausting. For the record I have watched that friend do it with many before me and suspected I was nearing my no longer useful date.
  8. Raised my kids in a slightly larger village in the U.K with the stores being on our side of the street and the library the other. Starting at about that age I would send them on emergency grocery runs.....bring home 1 item. They were told to go the long way which meant they were watched by people most of the way. The short way involves cutting through an area without houses. I normally sent one at a time on errands just because I thought my kids would be less distractible on their own and not streets to cross with any traffic. Because of the streets I think the older two could go together now but I wouldn’t add the younger to the mix. That would add confusion and responsibility that the first trips don’t need.
  9. A few series that I have enjoyed that should be library friendly are CS Harris’s St. Cyr https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39149.What_Angels_Fear, Julia Spencer Fleming https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/113002.In_the_Bleak_Midwinter?ac=1&from_search=true and Linda Castillo https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6115138-sworn-to-silence?ac=1&from_search=true. I am also a fan of many of the other books already mentioned particularly Mrs Pollifax and China Bayles by Susan Wittig Albert. I also love The Cat Who mysteries by Lillian Jackson Braun.
  10. I also want to encourage you to read the Well Trained Mind and some of the other books listed by a pp. Planning and using many curriculum providers was one of my favorite parts of Home Ed. That said I think an argument can be made for using a curriculum with a good schedule for your first year. You are fortunate that your girls are close in age and can do the majority of their school together. There are so many good literature based curriculums available now and the schedule will help you figure out what a typical day for your family needs to look like to get through the material in a year.
  11. I remember when you were reading them. I was very late to this author.😉 Just an FYI, I believe there are a couple of interesting events that take place in Soulwood but in the Yellowrock portion of the series. I just tried to google to figure out which books and wasn’t successful. They are briefly recapped in the Soulwood books ( at least the event that mattered in the latest book was) so I am not sure I would bother with the Yellowrock books but wanted you to know in case you feel like you have missed something.
  12. I love the Soulwood series! I ❤️ Nell. Have you read the latest one.....only asking because I like how the story is evolving especially in regards the group she grew up in. Have to admit this is one of the series I want to reread......think I will do it all by itself and skip the Jane Yellowrock books that sometimes intersect with these characters. I know a couple other BaWers read these too.....think Robin just reread actually.
  13. I finished By Cook or by Crook last night and would be happy to read another in the series but haven’t looked yet.......gave it a 3*. Today I started another new to me cozy series by Ellery Adams. The Secret Book and Scone Society has interesting characters but what has me really intrigued is the main character lives in a train car/ tiny house. I googled some pictures for an idea of what it might look like and I am amazed at how fun and nice these can be..........take a look at the variety.https://www.bobvila.com/slideshow/all-aboard-9-railroad-cars-converted-into-homes-47634#western-train-car.
  14. The Newfy would be highly appropriate as my best friend always has one and a few chihuahua’s. I made her a chihuahua quilt for her birthday this year so I need to do newf’s for this Christmas. Still looking for a pattern I like. Glad you are enjoying China Bayles...I haven’t read the most recent ones. Maybe I will read one as part of next month’s spelling challenge. I’ve been reading a new to me cozy today called By Cook or by Crook by Maya Corrigan which is quite good, as in I still don’t know who did it. 😉
  15. @JennW in SoCal I hope you start feeling better soon! I haven’t read the Bear and the Nightingale but @Æthelthryth the Texan, @Penguin@Matryoshka All rated it highly on Goodreads if that helps. Senlin Ascends was great on audio if you wand something different. That website is so great! So Newt, Nautilus, and night crawlers are now possibilities. This quilt is a long term project.........finishing it too quickly will make my kids nervous. 😉 I have collected several fun animal patterns that I want to try and this is a good way to put an alligator on the same quilt as a pink pig. I have patterns for about 90%of the animals already. Thanks for the James Veley idea......I saw them the other night while hunting for V’s for next month’s Rabbi David Small. I am going to just read what is due for a few days I think........
  16. Agreeing with ‘I’, ‘E’, and ‘V’.......which I am already working on for next month. Lately ‘N’ and ‘R’ are hard..........Totally going sideways but I am planning an ‘animal alphabet’ quilt and have came to a ‘surprising to me’ discovery.......not many animals have names that start with ‘n’. I think I am going with narwhale. These letter exercises have me thinking that ‘N’ is a little used letter.🤔 I started reading Crazy Rich Asians today. So far it’s fun and follows the movie well.......I loved the movie. I already have the second book......I put all three on hold at the same time and have waited for a really long time.
  17. I feel so of bad saying this but I am glad someone else I “know” is experiencing this. 😀. I missed the tv show! 😂 I never tried the fingerprint recognition on my iPad because I knew it wouldn’t go well.....almost two years later and I get reminded about it occasionally by my iPad!
  18. I was reminded of another aging problem I am having.....my fingerprints seem to be disappearing. I suspect it is a combination of my hobbies, hand quilting and knitting, and dry aging skin. Today I had a really hard time getting registered for a security screening. I panicked when I found out they needed fingerprints......they ended up accepting my pinky prints because they still show, barely. Btw, Disney is a royal pain for me too!
  19. The Bride Test just arrived in my stack and I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet. Glad you enjoyed it.......I just went to put it in the Goodreads stack and discovered it is second in a series. Not sure what I want to do about it now other than put the first book in the series on hold. Have you read The Kiss Quotient? I finished my spelling challenge. I love doing these because sometimes they force😉 me to read books that I might abandon easily. They also give me an excuse to read my comfort reads......... G.......Past Due For Murder by Victoria Gilbert U.......Unspeakable by Laura Griffin I.........When a Duchess Says I Do by Grace Burrowes I was hard this month 😉 D........Death in a Strange Country by Donna Leon O.......My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwai ........ this book was quite good, different and quick...adult content B.......The Forgotten by David Balducci R......Persepolis Rising by James Corey U ......A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White N.......Upon a Winter’s Night by Karen Harper E........Why Did’t they ask Evans? By Agatha Christie T.........Twisted by Laura Griffin T........No Exit by Taylor Adams I.........Magic Breaks by Ilona Adams...enjoyed the ending and am going to finish the series. Magic Tests, an enjoyable novella, was included.
  20. I am sure you have looked at the latest Lyme maps but have to say it’s spreading rapidly to places it’s never been before. Just saying this because it might not be from your home...... A good friend’s dog contracted it four years ago and had never been walked in a known Lyme area in the UK. It’s confirmed in our area now and I am a bit nervous about it. My family has been warned and are wearing trousers for hiking etc. My laundry volume has increased. 😉 Not sure how quickly health care will react to the unfamiliar......and I don’t want to learn the hard way. Other than brambles and nettles we have never really had to worry about being careful of the outdoors. No poison ivy, bugs, or snakes to be really vigilant about......I grew up partly in Florida where creepy crawlies were part of life. Totally spoiled.....
  21. Great list! I really enjoyed The Moonstone a couple of years ago. Still plugging away at my I. I don’t think Ds has read the book but certainly is well informed on Tesla. Out of curiosity........Do you see many(any) Tesla’s on the road where you are? Ds and Dh actively search for them and have only seen one since returning to the UK. The were not that unusual in the US....as in maybe 1 in an hour of driving if we were someplace moderately traffic heavy. I remember when Fellowship was first released and my friend's hubby was obsessed by the movie. I hadn’t seen the movie but knew one needed The Hobbit first for maximum enjoyment and no way could a 3 hour movie tell the story............I turned the guy into a reader. He gave me the dvd. 🤣........he was also pretty happy that he could read ahead! @Negin Sending Prayers for a safe and easy journey today. Hugs.....
  22. That Sonlight timeline book was something we never enjoyed. I have our’s somewhere and it really doesn’t have that much in it.......Maybe when this major tidy coughs up the timeline I will take it over for my books, the only problem is I rarely read books from before the 1970’s. I definitely would need to do settings not publishing dates...........It was odd because we were very prolific on the rolled white paper spread the length of the living room timeline that we pulled out and updated most weeks. My family didn’t do the formal well. I enjoyed The Uncommon Reader............Hitchcock movie books was one of my contemplated 10 x10 categories this year. Re. The Karen Harper books......she has written several set in Amish country and I have enjoyed all of the ones I have read. Don’t worry if you can’t find a particular book. Remember I am one the series in order people. Dark Road Home is a favorite that I have reread a few times (not recently) and should be in a box someplace https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/373455.Dark_Road_Home?from_search=true. Hugs, I hope things are shall I say stabilizing........... CoP’s (giggle) are the people in the congregation I always wonder about the most............such effort,. why bother? Can’t resist pointing out that Goodreads now allows you to list your rereads......😉🤣 btw, Dd is reading the Martian currently per your recommendation.
