  1. I have been in the just pertinent category but an experienced friend with several already in college has her dc's record everything. With one of her sons she was able to put together a really interesting course because of this list which had never occurred to her. When she looked at his list she discovered a really obvious interest in running a small business. He is actually doing this now. I don't think she sends the full list with applications.
  2. You have to be able to back in to pass your driving test here. I spent several lessons politely explaining my why back in theories -- my favorite was why not just drive through. I still don't back in often because I generally seem to end up driving places where I have to park on the street. The reality is you can get into super tight spots from odd angles in one go. Dh does it all the time. The only problem is we may be parked but can't get out of the car, 2 inches each side. It isn't so hard after you figure out the "formula" for your car. Lots of online directions. In very basic terms you pull up to the spot, three parking lines up, adjust side view mirrors so you can see markings, start with one a half turns to the wheel, watch mirrors for the lines and go. My instructor had pieces of electrical tape strategically placed on his car that needed to be alligned too.
  3. Out of curiosity do most students prep for both of these exams? This is all new to me.
  4. My kids want to know where the donut cheeseburgers are being sold. I do too! We have Krispy Kreme but just a small one where they don't make the donuts onsite. Different special flavors then US normally.
  5. Hunter-- when you have a chance take a look at Ms Effie's AP literature website. It says it has 25 items for teacher's and is a gold mine imo. There is a great list of essay prompts. Book lists. Good to analysis directions. I just found it and love it.
  6. If you like RC Sproul take a look at the Ligonier Ministries website. They suppot Reformation Bible College. Some great deals can be found on Fridays. They have a $5 sale every Friday. His dvd courses are wonderful!
  7. My kids would say thats because your dh is American, those were the cake parties. ;) Several of their friends have an American parent. It happened several times so I will admit I put it down to cultural. Frequently toppings(sprinkles, m&m's, etc) came out with the ice cream. So fun but not what they expected. I do know what happens to the cakes, they get put in a tin and eaten over the next week by the family. Very different from my philosophy of get the cake out of the house right away. I feel like a bit of a failure if I have leftover bday cake.
  8. I think the jelly beans are crunchy because they aren't fruit gums which are gummy bears but soft. Also jelly in the UK (at least my part) is jello. Picture the look on the dc's faces when they were served a HUGE bowl of vanilla ice cream and jello at their first birthday party here. They still want to know what happens to all the cakes....candles get blown out and the cake disappears.
  9. Get some chocolate covered digestives and make Smores. They are the best Smores ever! Even dd loves them and she is not a marshmallow fan. Normally just feeds them to her brother.
  10. Your mom takes you to a day out with a big home ed group held at a church with a kitchen. We all brought food to share for lunch. I always bring a main like mini pizzas and a treat item so my kids(both picky to began with) normally just eat their own food but look social. They are allowed to eat whatever they want when at these lunches but normally stick to things they know. Dd was in the kitchen some of the time so she saw the jars. Ds was running around with the guys and missed where the hot dogs came from. The kid likes hot dogs a lot so when handed one in a bun happily ate it and asked for more. I didn't see what he was eating until all the hot dogs were gone so I just asked him about them on the way home.;) He now points them out when in Aldi. Dd cringes big time.
  11. My peanut butter comes from COSTCO so American. The one time I tried Aldi peanut butter...we did not finish the jar. Odd grainy texture. Hot dogs in a jar. Well, ds accidentally ate some(yes, that is plural) and really liked them. He had not had hot dogs in a long time but still....the look on his face after! He keeps telling me we need to buy them. ;)
  12. I would not worry as long as his comprehension is good. The main thing with a young reader who is capable of much harder books is providing a bit of a mix level wise. A mix is better. Imo. Also I did not want them to miss the stories a five yr old normally reads(or has read to them) and finds funny. Plus it slowed them down a bit even if it meant frequent library trips. The biggest problem for me was finding appropriate books.
  13. This is me in so many ways. I used to keep a list of authors but that was abandoned and lost when the dc's arrived. I am really enjoying the list aspect of this. Even Goodreads is new to me. Dd and I have really enjoyed our lists there. :) The ideas for books here have been great. Those combined with finally being brave enough to try e library books have expanded my choices hugely. Big stacks, lovely but they do mean I am not meeting my original 5/5/5 goals and probably won't unless I get busy on those. I would be willing to an Anna Karenina read along as long as I get to do it on my kindle. That does meet one of those original goals! Anyway I have read over 100 books so far and have loved reading everyones reviews and ideas. So thank you Robin for doing this thread.
  14. Thank you for the link. Course descriptions are something I have been avoiding which must be done soon! That thread will be a huge help.
  15. I am going to give you a bump. If you search Stobaugh here you will probably find not many have used it successfully. I bought one of his older versions and never used it. I am not sure what the number of writing assignments are for his courses. The IEW Lit courses which we are now using require 2 essays with revisions per unit with 9 units per book. I hope this helps you decide.
  16. Just finished John Grisham's "Theodore Boone The Accused". This is a great series for young teens. Dd really likes them. It is about a thirteen year old boy who spends far too much time in his parents law office and uses his legal knowledge to solve crimes. In this one he is accused of a crime himself. In my village library these are in the adult section (????) but they are written for the younger market. I also finished "The Art Forger" by BA Shapiro. I found it very interesting but disturbing. I did like it.
  17. I think PCUSA might be a great fit for you. That being said I want to share my recent journey with you. We recently changed churches for a huge variety of reasons but the main one is the fact that we learned that the church in our village actually match our reformed beliefs pretty much exactly. We had never given that church serious consideration although we did attend on Sundays when our former 2 hour drive was impractical. We started attending frequently last year because a friend's terminal illness meant I wanted to spend some Sunday afternoon's with her. The distance to our other church made that impossible. During those weeks we all learned to navigate the assorted prayer books etc. and started to really enjoy the services. After that comfort level was achieved it became very hard to attend the church where we were members. The parts that we did not agree with became highlighted. Also after my friend died I reflected upon her deep faith and wondered if my journey with her had not been partly finding a new church -- hers. Now that I am comfortable I love the more formal services. Even the repetitive parts are very comforting. It feels very right. Look hard at your choices. Give churches that you might be crossing off the list for superficial reasons an extra look. Good luck on your journey.
  18. I can't believe I am saying this but I love, absolutely love ebooks! They are even better now that I can get a better variety from my library. I can read in the middle of the night in bed without disturbing dh. Wonderful! Oddly enough when I go to bed with a charged kindle on my bedside I sleep really well. Enjoy your new toy!
  19. Congratulations!!!!
  20. I posted on the way out the door in order to find this thread again.:) I have not used educationportal.com for history just economics and chemistry. The video clips are good and reasonably short. A quiz is available after. I think you can earn a certificate. Anyway AP world history is a choice. Thank you for your link!
  21. Mayonnaise and anything made with it. I hate mustard too.
