  1. My son is going to self-study AP Biology this year and take the AP test in May. I would like to set out a schedule with Campbell and Reece, but I would like something that gives him feedback. For anyone who has followed a similar route, what did you use? I don't have a big budget, and was hoping to rent the textbook on amazon because it's so much cheaper than buying! Thanks so much!
  2. Does anyone have, or know where I could find, an approved AP Bio syllabus that uses the Concepts & Connections text? Three of the 4 samples on the AP page use the "big" Campbell and the other uses Raven. I know that the Concepts & Connections book has been used for AP; I can find schedules but I can't find an approved syllabus.
  3. My dd is taking AP biology her sophomore year and wants to do some preparation this summer. She hasn't had high school biology, but she did take AP chemistry her freshman year (this year) and is doing well. Is there anything particularly difficult in AP biology that she could get a handle on now? Memorize the Kreb's cycle? Learn how a kidney works? Study the difference between transcription and translation?
  4. How is AP biology going this year? I'd love to hear from PA Homeschoolers or Thinkwell folks or anyone else taking AP bio online. How's the quality of the coursework? Are the students feeling prepared for the exam? How is the work load? Thanks!
  5. This is the season for ordering AP test review books, and I finally found a good one for the AP biology exam! The exam was redesigned 3 years ago, and the "big names" in test prep books simply haven't gotten the memo. It's called "Pearson Education Test Prep Series for AP Biology: To Accompany Pearson'sCampbell Biology Program". Here is the amazon link. I just submitted a review for it, so I thought I'd go ahead and paste it here too, in case anyone was interested. "I teach AP biology for our homeschool co-op, and I have been looking for a good AP biology review book since the test wa
  6. I know we are going to use Campbells Biology when Ds self studies AP Bio. Pearson also sells a Study Guide that goes along with Campbell's Biology textbook. Such Study Guides can be so touch and go as useful or just a total waste of twenty bucks. Anyone with experience? Is it useful? ETA: One of the ways our family is able to homeschool is for me to search out used curriculum in advance that I know we are going to use. When I catch it cheap, I buy it. I am not considering using this text with my 5th/6th grader. I am looking ahead to 8th/9th grade.
  7. Could someone offer advice on preparing for the AP Biology test independently? What books did you use and how did you study? (I realize that an AP Biology course would not be placed on the transcript for a self-study class.) Thank you for your help.
  8. Apparently, the combination of Apologia Biology and Advanced Biology add up to adequate preparation for the AP exam. My dd is taking a co-op A+P course using the Apologia Advanced Bio text. She's considering going through the other material at home, with tutoring from family so though she wouldn't have an "AP Bio" course to transcript, she might have an AP exam score. However, she doesn't like the Apologia materials, and would prefer something like the Campbell, at least for working through at home. I have downloaded several syllabi for AP Bio courses, including using Campbell's. But I'd
  9. After our meeting with the school counselor yesterday, I got to wondering just what the difference was between regular bio and AP (counselor couldn't tell us :cursing: ). She said the AP could be taken after regular bio, but then I wondered just how different it'd be and why not just take the AP. In my experience, you don't take chem before AP Chemistry, or Physics before AP. Is the AP class something a 9th grader with strong science sense could handle?
  10. If you had a child who took the new, redesigned AP biology exam this May, or if your child is going to take it next year, or even if your child is going to take the new, redesigned AP chemistry exam this coming May, then you may be interested in the score summary that the College Board released for this year's test. (They won't release the actual individual scores until July, however.) I had 4 students, including my son, who took it. They didn't think it was as bad as they had expected. I figured the CB would probably have an easy curve, since it was the first year of a brand new test, an
  11. I really hesitate to invest in more biology books so I'm wondering if it is possible to just eliminate chapters from the older Campbells? Does anyone have a list of what they stopped covering? But maybe there is new material or a completely different way of looking at biology now so newer books are needed? Thanks for any help or suggestions about AP Bio preparation! Joan
  12. I taught this class unofficially this past year, and my 4 students (all boys) took the exam on Monday. I just got my syllabus approved a few days before the exam, so (now that I have some extra time, LOL) I have been reading the teachers forum for AP biology over on the College Board website. I also have kept up with the big thread for this year over on College Confidential. I thought I would jot down a few notes from those places, as well as from my students, in case people were wondering about the new exam. The College Board redesigned the exam this year, based on a new curriculum fra
  13. We spent the weekend at U Roc with middle son, so I have more answers about what his college prof feels is "wrong" with high school Bio... ;) Essentially, U Rochester is a research school and all profs do research. When one is doing research, there isn't a book in the world that can keep up with the latest "correct" info that is out there and many books are "dumbed down" so the average person (non-researcher) can understand them. This prof hasn't seen an intro Bio book he likes because they are all outdated and/or dumbed down. He feels ALL intro Bio books aimed at the college fresh
  14. Would taking BJU Biology and doing the AP Biology prep books and flashcards prepare a student for the AP Biology exam? Our current plan is to do Miller-Levine this year, Chemistry next year, and Campbell's Biology in 11th grade, Physics in 12th. But, she really wants to take a tough Biology this year, because we both feel that this year she will have more "free" time than she will in future years to devote to a memory-laden course such as AP Biology. Is BJU enough prep? We prefer its layout to the Campbells. She has had Physical Science with Chemistry prep. I am so tire
  15. Ds is starting 7th grade this fall. Science instruction was (intentionally) unstructured until now. He just recently started doing workshops with the local STEM university. He is signed up for a year long math class starting in September, in that same institution. He is working his way through AoPS Pre-Algebra now, and is signed up for an Algebra online-class in the fall (using Jacobs). I, myself, followed the typical European track of Biology/Chemistry/Physics from 5th to 10th every year, and, while not passionate about these subjects, was a successful student. The last two years
  16. Have you found a good way to complete the labs? I was looking at the labs required for the AP test. It looks as though some can be accomplished virtually online. Is it possible to order kits? The labs I looked at don't seems to have hard to get materials. Just wondered what others' experiences were. Thanks, Kristine in VA
  17. I think I may be suffering from delusions of grandeur, but I think I would like to try AP biology next year for 9th grade. However, I am terribly ignorant about the whole process. I have gone to the collegeboard site, which made things clear as mud. Are any of you kind hearted individuals willing to help straighten a novice out on the subject? I have a fairly strong background in biology, having previously been a massage therapist and a marine biologist. Biology doesn't scare me! Labs don't scare me! (I may be an idiot in complete denial:tongue_smilie:.) So...are there any specific
  18. 2. Can my DS prepare for SAT subject test and AP after using apologia biology or does he need to do anything else? 2. Would it be enough to use a prep book after a year of biology? If it helps he has done gen science and physical science so far and would be starting 9th grade in the fall. He has completed singapore discovering math 1a-2b. Thanks for helping me sort this out. I'll like him to do the tests close to when he completes the course if possible.
  19. plan to take this route, her reason being that the regular Bio is still fresh in her mind and she won't have to relearn the basics if she took the Ap Bio say in 11th or 12th grade, what are your opinions Andrea
