  1. Woooooo! Very exciting!! I love hearing these stories, as my dd will be in 12th grade next year!
  2. I want casual. I don't want, how Ellie so perfectly put it, throw your clothes in the air and run under them. I can't get past the baseball cap though. I'm too busy wondering if he at least took it off to pray . . .
  3. We don't have company plates. We have Christmas dishes that we use in December. Thanksgiving. We eat in the dining room, and that's something we only do for company or holidays. This year, we might use paper plates, because we'll have ten for dinner. But they'll be Chinet or something otherwise heavy duty. I'm sure dh will pull out the crystal wine and water goblets, because if we don't use them for holidays, then we would never use them at all . . .
  4. During Grand Jury proceedings? I believe the proper term for this is "criminal act." Seriously.
  5. :grouphug:This is exactly why you are practicing, right? So you can spot potential misunderstandings before he takes the test? Do you have enough time to continue to practice, emphasizing that he is to read the sentences correctly in order to determine the answer? I don't know your math issues, but it sounds like he's doing GREAT. You WANT him to read and understand material without nitpicking. He sounds bright, he's understanding the context, he's reading quickly, comprehending as he reads. That's all good. The problem is that, in this instance, he's supposed to be nitpicking. That's just one more issue I have with standardized testing. (Yes, I understand it's a tool to test the masses.) Praise your ds; HE's doing great, and so are you. For now, he'll have to adjust his thinking "to the test." Perhaps he can see it as a game and be challenged to "find" the mistake. He'll need to slow down and see the sentence in a different context, if possible. It's the testing that is lacking. You don't say why you have to test or why this is important. I would encourage you to see the bigger picture though. Your son is demonstrating the long term benefits of hsing. Ultimately, it will be far better for him to read quickly, to understand context, and to auto-correct than to get hung up on a typographical or grammatical error while reading something much larger.
  6. Could you post a link to the group? Is it the Chemistry-specific group, Apologia as a whole, or?? Thank you!
  7. Dd is using Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? along with the workbook. We're also watching the John Stossel DVDs. I took a friend's advice (Lee Binz, The Homescholar) that not all classes have to be rigorous and am applying it to Economics this year. Dd will receive 0.5 credit total. (Can't find the link to Lee's specific article though.)
  8. "This is so awkward for me, Instructor. I did not realize any of the instructors would see the registration forms, because I was told they wouldn't. We have really enjoyed having you as a teacher (list all good points). I just feel, right now, at this time, that dd really to be pushed harder (to get her past this ______________ she's been in [if applicable]). I'm hoping that won't always be the case for her, because we'd love to have you as a teacher again. You're such a sweetheart, and the last thing I'd want to do is hurt your feelings." But I talk too much, so maybe it's a better idea to just get her a nice little gift to thank her for teaching your dd.:D
  9. I'd throw in Liberty's Kids DVDs and a couple of the Schoolhouse Rock videos. If I were covering that with my kids at that time, I'd probably throw in memorization of the Bill of Rights (not entire wording, just what each one represents).
  10. Are you on Firefox? There is some horrid little "google redirect" that can affect Firefox users. It affected me for months, and what I could find to get rid of it seemed too complicated. Running my anti-vir and anti-mal had not fixed it . . . . UNTIL this week. Finally it's fixed, and I believe that my FREE anti-malware got it, http://www.iobit.com/malware-fighter.html I've run this for many months in conjunction with whatever my Windows firewall is, and MalwareBytes, with no conflict. (And I use Avira as my anti-virus.) HTH. It was VERY frustrating, and occasionally that redirect would send me somewhere that would try to attack my computer. :glare:
  11. Mine either. Hugging people around you has nothing whatsoever to do with how much you may or may not love God. Ugh.
  12. I googled and found they are illegal in parts of Michigan . . . Apparently, there is no restriction when used on private property here in VA, with the permission of the property owner. Interesting thread, I'd never given the legality of it any thought.
  13. Oh crud back. Not another famous person on WTM boards that we'll have to speculate and go crazy?????? Nooooooooooo! :D:D
  14. :bigear:I'm curious what you find out, even though my state laws are likely different. Ds has air soft stuff, even went to an air soft bday party yesterday. But I can't imagine them playing in a "public place," that would be disturbing!
  15. When I heard this on the news yesterday, part of the report said it was due to death threats against him. I'm not saying that's an accurate report, but that's what is being put out there. Oh, wouldn't that just be another layer of ugliness and sadness at the possibility he grew up next to Sandusky . . .
