  1. It might be true for overall groups of children, but it will still depend on each individual child. I had a late birthday, yet I went to a classroom two grades up for reading, and the school wanted to put me a grade ahead. For social reasons, though, I've always been thankful my parents didn't agree to that. I have told my ds that he will have to work harder, because he will be applying to colleges with kids who are more than a year older than he. Life is never "even."
  2. Cold whole wheat pasta was surprisingly good! Onion, chopped chicken, black or green olives, black beans and corn!, nuts, avocado, canned beets. I wouldn't do all of those together though . . . :tongue_smilie:
  3. Pay your kids a penny a page? $.10 a page? If they're too young, can you give it to an older sibling from co-op, and offer to pay $5?
  4. Little Bear books by Elsie Minarik are similar to Frog and Toad. I'd also suggest Margaret Hillert's books, and the Horrible Harry series. The earlier Magic Tree House books are also about this easy (they're also the most poorly written of the MTH series, so be forewarned). I remember American Girl books being a little more advanced. You might find the Accelerated Reader site helpful in finding approximate reading levels. When you pull up a title, their grade level rating is listed under "BL." (I'm not an AR fan and don't always agree with the ratings, but for this purpose, it's a fair guide.)
  5. LOL! I LOVED Colorado, and even though the snows were always awesome (melted fast, gorgeous with the blue skies within a day or two), I don't miss that part of it one bit!
  6. We bought dd a Betta fish when she was 4 or 5, but it wasn't with any purpose in mind, other than to have a pet . . . If I thought about it, I'd say it may be too much responsibility to put onto a 4 year old. Fish die pretty easily, and I'd hate for my child to have any guilt over it when it's nothing she can control. My dd loved her fish. He lived forever (a couple of years), and she insisted we put him in the freezer when he died. The ground was too cold to bury him that week. He ended up staying in our freezer for a few more years, and he was often the first thing she showed new friends who came to play. We finally tossed him when his tail broke off.:tongue_smilie:
  7. I was reluctant to replace my original WTM book. It was great then, and I didn't want to spend more money. But I checked out the new edition from the library and quickly ordered a new copy for myself. It was that different, and that much more helpful than even the first wonderful book. :)
  8. I chose 7-10, but that's because we have the same family friends over. Other than that, not at all. It's always been something I've wanted to work on . . .
  9. My dd was almost 4 when my ds was born. They have always been very close, and it continues to this day. They spend a lot of time together and truly enjoy each other's company. It's been a huge blessing to our family. She's loving and protective towards him; he admires her and practically lives to entertain her.:001_smile:
  10. Totally Jamestown. I was very disappointed in Williamsburg; it was incredibly boring. We went to Jamestown the following year during homeschool days. It was 90+ degrees out, raining, and we still had a much better time. It's more manageable timewise, and there is a lot more to do. We also liked the mix of outdoor exhibits and the indoor museum. If it makes any difference, my kids were between 9 and 15 when we went to both places. (Oh, and if you plan to eat at Williamsburg, bring an armored truck. It cost a small fortune even for just four of us.) And congratulations to your dd!! It's a great town, and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful trip!
  11. :grouphug::grouphug: Ah, you're just focused! (And "everywhere" was not a response on the vomit poll that has been here for the past two days.) I understand. I like my 5 day schedule and don't like smooshing it into 4 days (or 3, gulp!). Have a good day, your kids can hang out a bit and watch something educational on tv, read, or be read to, listen to classical music, etc. I hope your ds feels better SOON. :grouphug:
  12. We used to use K-9. It's free. We could block specific sites, OR we could allow ONLY certain sites. I've been thinking about adding it again on ds's computer.:glare:
  13. If my mom (or other relative) invited me but then "didn't care" if I came, I would assume they might appreciate me being there during the drive to and from the hospital as a nice distraction. At the hospital, you can easily fade into the background yet still be available to support anyone who needs it--driving for a food run, running to the cafeteria for coffee, etc. I'd go. Better to be there and not be needed than the other way around.:grouphug:
  14. Me too. I probably wouldn't respond if someone actually had the nerve to say that to me.
  15. At this point, not much. I figure there was a person who did something, and Hollywood takes off with the rest . . .
  16. Games for Math has many activities/games that would be suitable. You can likely find the book at your library (or ILL it). And if you go to that link I provided, you can look inside the book and see some of the suggestions. :001_smile:
  17. I've had this tab open for a week, thinking dd might be interested in the link. I'm personally still stuck on "fun" and "geometry" together though, lol. :D Thanks for posting!
