  1. Butternut? Acorn? I thought this IS the season for winter squash . . . just not summer squash (yellow squash, zucchini). Or what about making a different side dish that will be less expensive.
  2. Cutlets Romano 1/2 c. plain or Italian bread crumbs 1/3 c. grated fresh Parmesan cheese (or the green can stuff, for pete's sake) 1/4 t. salt 1/4 t. pepper 1 egg 4 small boneless skinless chicken breasts, pounded to 1/4" thickness 1 T. olive oil optional: your favorite spaghetti sauce Combine bread crumbs, cheese, salt and pepper in shallow bowl. In another shallow bowl, beat egg well. Heat oil in large pan on medium heat. Dip chicken pieces one at a time into the egg and then the crumb mixture, and place in pan. Cook until done, turning once, about 4 mins. per side, depending on how flat you really pounded the chicken. Serve with a bowl of spaghetti sauce, so people can spoon some on top of their chicken.
  3. If it's not illegal, it's dangerously close. See IRS rules; for more info, click on the Revenue Ruling 2007-41 in para. 4.
  4. I'm doing Alton Brown's Make Ahead Gravy, fresh cranberry sauce (which, as others have said, needs to chill overnight), and stuffing (I can make parts of it ahead of time, bread, sausage, vegetables). I'll be checking out the link to PW mashed potatoes too, as I'd like to *successfully* make those ahead of time. I'm also making jello pretzel salad, but I might not make that until Thurs. morning.
  5. I am glad to know that it has changed (in 2002, according to a pp).I've been wondering for several years why ANY study/prep is required for the GED. But I took it back 30 years ago in high school as a way to cover my bases. Even at the time, I thought it was ridiculously simple. That must be the test to which Mary is referring.
  6. :iagree: I am loathe to spend money on something I already have (1st ed., which is GREAT). I checked 2nd ed. out from the library years ago, and it seemed that the only differences were curriculum suggestions mostly to include Story of the World (which we were already using). But when I checked the 3rd ed. out from the library, I ordered a new copy for myself. It's THAT much more from the 1st ed., and I appreciate having updated info too.
  7. Professional photos? They should easily remove any facial blemishes from your photo. I would expect that they can lighten your hair or put artificial highlights in them, whatever you prefer. (Heck, anyone can do that for a very small fee using Picasa's Piknik software.) I wouldn't wear a Christmas sweater. Somehow, somewhere, there may be a truly nice one, but I'm sure I've never seen it. ;) Think about what you have that you like, and if it will complement your dd's outfit. Silver? Gold? Green? Darker blue? A red that is softer on you but doesn't clash with dd? The nice thing is that you can then choose your dh's clothing based on yours, or based on yours AND dd's, and he can pull both of your outfits together. I would also be the one trying at the last minute to change my hair, Nair my moustache, overpluck my eyebrows, stab myself in the eye trying new makeup, etc. You poor thing!! :grouphug: Have FUN and enjoy yourselves!!
  8. Either. Both. It depends. I used to use an electric, then switched many years to a regular. I got sick of buying shaving lotion, so I pulled out the electric. But sometimes I hate to use it when dh is still sleeping, so I'll use the regular razor in the shower. I have a giant bottle of hair conditioner, so I'm using that in place of shaving lotion.
  9. Not so bad that I hate it, but I do all I can to avoid it. When ds was 9, he asked me, "Mom, what's the difference between ironing and sewing?":D
  10. My kids also had no curiosity. When my dd was in preschool, "Daddy gives Mommy a special hug and the baby begins to grow" was good for her. We told both of our kids when we began to have concerns they might hear things elsewhere. They didn't have exposure to other kids en masse that most public schooled kids do. I knew I had to give them info out of a book. I spent an hour or so at B&N--by myself--looking through all of their kids book on s3x. The two I chose were the first two in the God's Design for Sex series. (I'm mentioning this specifically to you as I see that you use CLE as part of your curriculum.) I felt the same as you. My kids were very unimpressed by the whole thing, which made me a lot less apprehensive.:)
  11. :grouphug: If serving our country is not everyone's definition of a successful conclusion to hsing, it should be. :patriot: My daughter is also hearing that call. It can be a little unsettling at times for me. I'm so encouraged by this thread.
  12. I was going to suggest the same thing. I've heard of this before, I assumed it was here on the boards. It's a great letter, Nance.
  13. Our camp filled up and did not have enough room for all of the kids to sleep there. Some commuted in from home to the Capitol. TP encouraged those kids (and parents) to join in the activities at the camp each evening (they must have brought their own food or came after dinner). Dd said she felt sorry for the kids who did not sleep there, that they missed out. Even coming in the evening did not give them what she felt was the full benefit. After the evening activities (worship and encouragement?), a TP (teen) staffer would come to each cabin to pray with the girls. Dd also thought the carpool was another time of bonding with that group and actually enjoyed the driving back and forth. It was especially surprising hearing this from dd, because she's happily unsocial (understatement).
  14. My dd is taking Apologia Chemistry as an outside class this year. The teacher offers extra credit questions at the end of each test. Because science/math is not dd's thing, I allow open book tests (well, I would if she were doing chemistry at home). Another possibility might be to give her a second chance to correct her mistakes, and then give her half credit if she answers correctly this time.
  15. Bob Jones biology? Or are you looking for something secular? I'm not familiar enough with the other curriculum suggested here.
  16. Her girls are in public high school this year. I don't know how math turned out, but I heard from Love2Smile a month or so ago that school so far was going well. I'm sure she's no longer on the boards.
  17.:lol: I'm sorry for laughing. *I* am your dh, except I usually figure out a bit earlier to stop talking and pretend I knew all along. Some people feign ignorance. I feign intelligence.
  18. I chose None, it's not our thing. But my real answer is: I will consider motherhood a success if I never step foot on Disney property. My sil/bil offered to treat us to a Florida/Disney/Epcot vacation a few years ago. We turned it down. Waaaaay too overwhelming.
  19. He sounds like a sweetheart who knows your quirks. You want to keep it that way. Maybe if you agree to let him decorate for Christmas, you can do what you want the other eleven months of the year.:D
