  1. My oldest worked a little more than halfway through Apologia General. I was determined to try and complete it. I emailed with Apologia a few times for help before I finally gave up on making it work for us. It was not a good fit and ds was losing the love for science. 😞 He used ABeka video Earth Science for 8th and enjoyed Mr. Enders' class, but there were tons of quizzes and tests. Next time around I think I would like to try The Rainbow for middle school by Beginnings Publishing. I think the lab based science would be very engaging.
  2. If you want to take a vitamin to help with depression, I suggest niacin (B3). Not the "no flush" kind. It will make you flush and maybe a little itchy at first until you get used to taking it. I take vitamin D3 with K2 and multivitamins. If you were already taking an antidepressant, you should talk to your doctor about stopping and moving toward a more natural remedy first. Some antidepressants need to have the doses tapered down until weaned, or they can cause untoward side effects. Meditation and exercise can also help. Here are a couple links about niacin and depression. http://www.doctoryourself.com/niacinreviews.html https://www.foodmatters.com/article/how-to-take-niacin-vitamin-b3-for-depression-and-anxiety
  3. I just received ours last week. There should be a "Teacher's Guide". I don't know how often you'll need it because I've not sat down to read through it yet.
  4. I loved that CLE math was very independent and routine in the 200's and on. So long as he can read and follow directions, he could be independent with it. You'll just need to keep up with grading quizzes and tests to make sure he's not missing anything before moving on. Maybe, give him the placement test to see if he is where he needs to be or if he could be placed further along.
  5. My oldest will be a senior next year. 😯 This is what we have planned so far: Pre-calc MUS Physics (Apologia?) Anatomy & Physiology (maybe) Clearwater Press Byline Speech Civics Economics Japanese Cultural Philosophy and Literature: Worldviews in Conflict
  6. Yes, I have all those thoughts. My oldest ds will be a senior next year and my dd is right behind him in 11th next year. The college brochures and emails keep coming, too, so I feel like I have to plan next school year and explore college at the same time. In the past, I would have everything planned by now, but I'm a little overwhelmed by it all. I spent time considering whether to send ds to community college for a few classes or to just keep going on our own, so I haven't figured out what he'll be using for school yet. I keep meaning to post on 12th grade thread. I can't believe how fast these years have gone by.
  7. My dd is interested in a career in animation, so I am doing my best to add art into her science to encourage her end goals. We will be learning A&P from various resources, but then she'll also have to draw the body from different angles/positions, and sketch parts of the body and label them. Her style is more cartoon like right now which she prefers, but if she goes on to art school, she may need more life like drawings. This is all new to me since we are more of a math and science family than art. It used to be the first thing to be dropped, but I'm trying to make it more of a priority for her now.
  8. This is DD's tentative plan: Math: MUS Geometry Science: Anatomy and Physiology (for Artists) English: Clear Water Press Byline for English History of Western Liberties (1 semester) Japanese 2, PE, SAT Prep course Art: Art Class & Art Projects DVDs (maybe), Storyboarding
  9. RightStart B CLE Math 1 Phonics Road to Spelling and Reading (since I have it already) & VIE 1 MFW Adventures and finish Evan Moor Beginning Geography Home Art Studio 1 Chess club and swimming
  10. We are using VT algebra and just started Module D recently. We finished lesson 5 and haven't had any hiccups yet. I do watch the videos with them and once in a while we'll watch it twice. Not sure which lesson you're on, but wanted to let you know we're using it, too.
  11. You have it covered. You've added your math and LA. We also used CLE math for elementary and the only change I would make is to add in more story problem practice which you already did with CWP. Remember to check the book list in the back of the TM and enjoy your trips to the library. The second half of Adventures didn't seem as busy as the first since we got into a routine with the state study, so that would be a good time to reconsider adding in something new like a foreign language if you didn't already begin one. We really enjoyed the bird study. We attached a clear, suction cup bird feeder outside our window where we do school and kept a pocket bird guide handy. My children would observe and identify them. They taught me a lot about birds. 😄 They're in high school now and they still remember a lot of it.
  12. Dovrar, The order of topics throughout the three volumes of algebra (volumes 3, 5, and 6) are not in a typical order. I wouldn’t recommend using just the one book from LMF for algebra 2.
  13. I've noticed that there are homeschoolers that have YT videos in support of MB. One of them may even be affiliated in some way and has lots of subscribers. I took a look at the LA, but it just didn't seem like a good fit for us. I have teens and I'm starting again with a K'er.
  14. The Learn Math Fast books helped my teens gain confidence in algebra. My middle child has always felt anxious about math, but this was a good step for her. I like that it is written in a conversational way to the student, the worksheets are just the right amount of problems, and you can email the author and she will answer right away. She even offered to call and talk with my child and work through some of the problems in the algebra 2 book. These books may be fine on their own, but since we have time, we went on to Video Text Algebra that I purchased used on ebay. There are no videos for LMF. The books are non-consumable since you will receive a code to go online and print the worksheets out. We've tried out too many algebra programs before we found a good fit. 😞 Oh, I see you've already found a plan while I was typing. Good luck to you!
  15. It's been a long time since we've used SL I've looked at other cores occasionally, but haven't gone back. If you liked In Grandma's Attic, there are three more books in that series. We also read the next two books that follow My Father's Dragon. You can always use the books that SL lists as a suggestion for books at your library. As far as sticking with SL, does the style suit you? Do you like the schedule and IG and the way history is presented? You may consider picking up "Honey for a Child's Heart" by Gladys Hunt to help you pick books. Your library might have it.
  16. I believe I have TGATB history 1 and language arts sets packed away. The LA is brand new. I bought ahead. The history was used for a short while and looks like new. Are you still searching for these items? If so, I will look for them.
  17. I used to work as an ICU nurse before becoming a sahm. If your daughter doesn't mind bodily fluids and surgery, but struggles with emotional patients then she might consider being an RNFA. Personally, if I were to go back and get more training and re-enter the work-force, I would become a Nurse Anesthetist and work locum tenems so I could travel around. An RN first assistant, or RNFA, works alongside the surgeon in the operating room providing direct patient care. Nurses need extensive surgical experience and additional training to qualify as first assistants, and many nurses get certification in perioperative nursing or obtain credentials as advanced practice nurses.
  18. I saw this article on Mercola and came back to share since I really didn't know much about vaping although my kids have joking mentioned it a couple times. Aparently, you can get vaping devices that look like juice boxes! 😡 My ds says that the e-cigs burn hotter and he's seen pics on the net of some people who've suffered some really bad burns and someone who had a device that malfunctioned and injured the person's face, so I don't suspect my kids would want to try it, but we are still gonna have that discussion. https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2018/06/27/e-cig-flavoring-harms-blood-vessels.aspx?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=facebookmercola_ranart&utm_campaign=ranart_e-cig-flavoring-harms-blood-vessels&fbclid=IwAR3NatH1HdYt2KuGQx9O9afnDWRZxogSBBzyvemJlH5zAvwZ7jBoqNGlYXg
  19. DH says to file a police report so you can take action later. You don't want to call police but you have to in this case because the report will be invaluable later when you need to sue for medical fees and such. 😞 Hope all turns out well.
  20. My dd15 loves to draw digitally. This is her response. Software: FireAlpaca and Medibang Paint pro are free and made by the same person. FireAlpaca allows you to animate using frame by frame. The Adobe software is $$$, so dd recommends starting with the free software first. They are similar to PhotoShop, but more user friendly. My dd is currently using Clip Studio EX bought on sale. She's worked on many different tablets, but the Cintiq 13 HD is her favorite. She uses the Samsung Galaxy Tab using Medibang when we're traveling in the car. It's wireless. Tablets: There's Surface Pro, IPad Pro, Cintiq, and Samsung Galaxy Tab allow you see your art on the screen while you draw/paint. If you have anymore questions about the software, interface, and getting started, feel free to ask. She'll be happy to help.
  21. We used CLE Math for many years in elementary. As long as you grade the quizzes and tests, you will be fine. If you are doing a lesson a day then there would be a quiz a week and a test the 3rd week. The quizzes will allow you to see if your son comprehends the information he's been learning before he gets to the LU test. You can take that opportunity to review anything missed. My son loved that he could move along at his own pace. My daughter needed more help with math, and I sat with her for the new material of each lesson to get her started. If he works well independently then yeah, it's that easy. Also, I didn't do any timed drills with my son. He did the drills, but I just didn't time him. Also, we didn't skip problems. If you were to continue with CLE after this year, I would suggest adding some sort of more challenging story problem practice. They only offer 2-4 per lesson, and we could have used more practice.
  22. Here's another source to add to your list to create extra word problem practice.
  23. RS A, Phonics Road level 1, BF Around the World with Picture books, EM Beginning Geography, Artistic Pursuits
  24. I recently rejoined. I had a personal account for a while (about five years ago) and it was easy to cancel, but recently signed back up because I like their vitamins and Renew lotion. I can get different brands of dish soap or laundry detergent, but will probably buy from Melaleuca if I'm making an order anyway. I used their prenatal vitamins with my last child and they didn't make me gag or feel sick. He was born very healthy, too. I've been having some thyroid problems for a couple years and didn't want to do anything drastic and tried to fix it with diet, but without success. I started taking Melaleuca vitamins again and had some blood tests done about 5-6 weeks later and my thyroid is suddenly okay. ???? I don't know if it was the vitamins, but it is the only thing I can think of that I was doing differently, so I signed back up to start getting them regularly. We shall see if this continues well. Also, winter always brings on dry skin, and I like their lotion. I've given it to friends who suffer from chapped hands with good results.
  25. Take a look at Learn Math Fast Vol. 5 http://learnmathfastbooks.com/index.html
