Hi everyone! A little background info...I've been homeschooling my 2 kids for 4 years now (they are 7 and 9) and absolutely love it. We've recently become foster parents and are in the process of adopting a 15 yr old girl. She also wants to be homeschooled but I'm clueless when it comes to high school curriculum :) Not only that, but I really don't know what kind of schooling and learning she does best with. She's done decent her freshmen year at the public school, but says she has a hard time focusing and has failed a couple classes. What I'm most worried about is grading her work. Not so much that I won't know how, but that there will be arguing if she isn't doing her work correctly or failing. I'd really like something that I don't have to grade and keep track of. At least for the first year, until I can see how self motivated she is (or isn't) and how well she does with homeschooling. Does anyone have any suggestions on what we can use? In summary, I'm looking for something that will keep her on track, that I don't have to grade myself, and would prefer it to be Christian based. Thanks so much!!!

We also have a senior dog who knows how to eat around the pill, no matter what we hide it in. And when we try cramming it down her throat, she pukes it up. The only thing that works is a pill crusher and a little water in her food. We crush the pill up into dust and sprinkle it in her food, then add a little water (and she loves when her food is softer) Hopefully this will work better for you :001_smile:

Can I use AAS 1 with just teacher's guide and tiles?
Shawndrese replied to kdownie's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I'd say it could be done. My son now is in AAS1 and usually does better when I just write the letters on a cheap dry erase board (it helps keeps his attention) So I usually don't even use the cards with him. It may be helpful though to keep a list (or just know in your head) of which sounds and rules he's having a hard time with...so you can remember to review those more with him.- 17 replies

Anyone live in a yurt?
Shawndrese replied to BlueTaelon's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I had never heard of a yurt before....but now I want one! We are trying to sell our house to move, and have been wanting to downsize and live simple. I only ask for plumbing and electricity :D -
"It's a small world"- your experiences

Last week I was at the dentist, and the girl cleaning my teeth told me she was also originally from California. Turns out she was born in the same town as me, grew up in the same neighborhood as me (and we both use to visit the same cow farm. haha), and then we both moved to Illinois at the age of 10. :D -
Yay! Thanks for sharing this! :001_smile:

I'm so glad to hear about this Bonine! I get horribly sick and Dramamine hasn't been working lately for me. I can't even swing on the swings with my kids. Definitely going to have to buy some! :tongue_smilie: -
That is great! :lol::lol:

working the overnight shift and homeschooling
Shawndrese replied to silliness7's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I work night shifts too, but cram them in over the weekend (12 hr shifts) and then school during the week. It makes for a long crazy week, but it's doable! Is your hubby able to help? -
I now am officially grossed out.
Shawndrese replied to Coffeetime's topic in General Education Discussion Board
This reminded me of the Americas Funniest Home Video of the little girl who had a used pregnancy test in her mouth because she thought she had a fever and that the stick was a thermometer. Anyone else see that one? -
I like to knit, crochet, and read. I do one of those just about every night after the boys are in bed. Which is usually why I'm also tired in the mornings ...I stay up too late! :D

I forgot to pick my son up from preschool when he was younger...his teacher called me to see if I was okay.

What do I absolutely need for All About Spelling?
Shawndrese replied to cherylterese's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I bought the basic kit and just bought a cheap index card box from an office supply store. The only thing I never used was the CD-ROM. I haven't checked prices in a while, but I suppose you could just order the letter tiles and the card dividers. (along with the TM and student pack) -

This is totally what I thought this thread was going to be about! And yes, I do that too! -
Starting solids at 4 months? (Formula fed baby)
Shawndrese replied to Perogi's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My kids pediatrician told us to wait out on the fruits/veggies until 6 months because they are more likely to develop a food allergy if started earlier. I've never really looked into how true that is though. But I did rice cereal for a couple of months to until they were old enough for the good stuff :tongue_smilie: (BUT they were up to drinking 8oz already....) -
Olympic Women's gymnast is homeschooled
Shawndrese replied to Elfknitter.#'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
I loved it when she was asked about her nerves and how she is dealing with them, and her response was that she has been meditating on scripture and just giving it to God. :001_smile: -
That's a cute idea! There is another thread similar to this one, and someone mentioned they decorate their room with balloons and streamers. I can't rememeber who it was, but I thought I might try that this year. And of course, I'll be getting all new supplies for them (which I cannot wait to buy! lol) and I'll wrap them up for them to open :D ETA: There was also this mentioned in that other thread...such a cute idea!
