  1. DD needs more audiobooks. What are your Librivox favourites? She has listened to/read all of Narnia (not that it's available on Librivox, just an example of what she likes). :bigear:
  2. We have a long car trip (12 hours of driving one way) coming up and enjoy listening to audio books during trips. We've enjoyed The Hobbit, Narnia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Hotel for Dogs, Because of Winn-Dixie, Mouse and the Motorcycle, and Ralph S Mouse, and some of us have enjoyed Cat of Bubastes and Black Beauty. They've listened to lots of Librivox books, I can't even name them all. Any suggestions? My kiddos are 6, 7, and almost-9. They tend to be easily scared. I'm not opposed to purchasing something really good and classic but Librivox is good too.
  3. Have any of these been published yet? Was there a delay? Any news?
  4. My dd7 just finished listening to all of the Chronicles of Narnia series (in less than one week) and she is dying to listen to something similar. We recently finished the Hobbit and her brother (11) is listening to all of the LOTR (the unabridged audio version). She is keenly interested in listening to it, but I think that it is "too much" for her--I just feel it is a more mature story. She has requested something else along the lines of Narnia (what is there, after Narnia?) Since LOTR and Narnia are the only real fantasy books that I enjoy, I don't have a clue about what she might like. Any suggestions? TIA
  5. with free audio book downloads at http://kids.learnoutloud.com there are 341 free entries in the KID STUFF area and i have been downloading books last night and today -- i am so excited. my boys are getting into audio book in the car. so much stuff is there -- i am in love i tell you
  6. We're going on vacation next week, which involves a 12 hour road trip. I need some goodies!
  7. My son is 7 and listens to audiobooks on his ipod all the time. I am running out of ideas and the search is massive! He is finishing up Aesop's fables and I have Beautiful Stories up next I also finally figured out that the child's homer is: the adventures of odyseuss and the tale of troy :tongue_smilie: He also recently finished Pinocchio and the secret garden. Feel free to add so others can find some good books too!
  8. My son will be starting first grade at the local public school. He is in a classical Christian school this school year. I have plan as far as read alouds, but I have used read along audiobooks. I would guess ds is reading at a 3rd grade level. 1. Can you send me some suggestions for audiobook/ book companions? I am going to look for them at the library. 2. What level book should I start with ds? Should I go up a level or two? 3. Should I get high interest books? Classics? Or a combination? 4. How much time a day should I have him use read along audiobooks ( on top of mom reading aloud and kid read aloud)? 5. Any advice from the literacy enthusiasts at hive mind? 6. What is your routine with audiobook/book combo? Ideas?
  9. It was for a site that had a lengthy list of free audio downloads. They were all classic stories taken off old LP's. They were voiced by famous actors from years ago and were quite well-done, if you didn't mind the sound quality. We downloaded tons of them and my boys listen to them all the time. Unfortunately, we didn't save the link and I can't find them again! Anyone know what I'm talking about?
  10. Our library just got a copy of T.H. White's "The Sword in the Stone" book on audio cd. Just curious, would this be ok for my almost 7 and almost 5 year olds to listen to? Too dark/scary/violent, etc.?
  11. I love Audio books, but too often homeschooling parents use these in place of reading. I've written a blog post about this: http://www.knittedthoughts.com/2011/11/reading-versus-audio-books.html because as a writing teacher who regularly tutors and works with homeschoolers in Writing Enrichment classes, I see this as a trend that can have some unfortunate consequences (especially when it comes to grammar, mechanics and spelling). A good balance between eye-on-the-page reading and audio books is what works best!
  12. We spend a lot of time in the car driving my oldest to dance. Twice a week she goes early enough that I have to bring the two youngest along on what is a 45 minute to 1 hour round trip. I've been thinking about playing Audio books for the little guys but I want something that's going to last most of the trip, not be too annoying for me or oldest DD and will hopefully keep their attention. Any suggestion?
  13. Not sure if anyone has posted this before, but a friend just sent me the link for Books Should be Free.
  14. What are your best finds on Librivox (or other sites that have audio book recordings)?
  15. Can you suggest a place where I can download audio books as a mp3 file? Dramatized would be great!
  16. Audible.com has a zillion versions of Treasure Island, which we are studying in co-op. I'm overwhelmed with the choices, so I'm looking for suggestions. (Librivox might do, also, if it's good.) If you've listened to this story on audio, I need recommendations for two things: 1. An unabridged version with a good reader - any suggestions? 2. Possibly a dramatized version. There are several - has anyone listened to any of them? I'm inclined to go with the BBC version, but I'd like to hear suggestions. Thanks!
  17. We're going on a long (3 month) trip and I want to keep up some schooling, but without the weight of school books--except for the absolutely necessary. In another post someone suggested doing audiobooks while in the car/plane, etc. So, What are your favorite audiobooks? Science (nature study), history (we're doing the 50 states and landmarks, US geography), or just great younger kids literature. If they were free that would be even better, :D but I know some resources are worth the expense. So shoot away with the ideas! Thanks!
  18. Can anyone tell me their favorite classics to listen to with their children and where to find them for free or cheap? Thanks Susan
  19. I found this site and thought others might be interested. It has the Burgess animal and bird books, 50 Great Stories, Our Island Story, and many more. ;)
  20. I am trying to make a list of audio books to check out from the library.. what is your favorite?? thanks!!
  21. After reading the thread on favorite audio books, I began to wonder where the best place to get audio books would be. Our library has a fairly good selection, but where are your other favorite places to find them?
  22. We always get Hank the Cow Dog and Ramona Cleary when we travel but I really needs something new. Any suggestions?
  23. I need some help with this. Have you had good experience with this free service? If so, what are the favorite books your dc have listened to? I don't even know where to begin searching for books - I am so unaware of the classics I don't know what to even ask for on their search. Sad but true!
  24. Hi, I own and will use all the SOTW and also A Little History of the World. Also have the IEW Poetry Memorization program I am looking for all of your favorites in all subject areas. We will be on the road for months and my dc LOVE to learn in the car. Please share your favorite math, science, geography, poetry, history, literature, etc., recordings - they can be pure memory work stuff, songs, stories, whatever. Thanks.
