  1. They do recommend that you go through TWSS when using Bible Heroes. So if you have it, yes, watch it! I'm sure it will help. I only got the overview dvd (which I haven't watched yet!) because BH is our first foray into IEW. I didn't want to fork over the $$ until I had a better feel for IEW. If I could borrow TWSS from someone, I would!
  2. For years as a child I believed there was a mini-Frankenstein with a pet alligator living under my bed. I would take flying leaps from my bedroom door onto my bed each night so that the alligator wouldn't bite my toes!
  3. Ok, so I just went and tried a bunch of my comb-bound books and some of them lie nearly flat, others don't. I can see how the size of the comb affects it. But how do you easily zip it open to add a page? I find that a huge pain. I have a planner with multiple sections, I need to add pages to it in several of the sections and haven't done it because it is such a pain with the comb binding. That's why I am wondering if yours is somehow different, but it looks like a regular comb binder from the link.
  4. You can buy the FLL 3 wkbk as a pdf and print. I know the number of pages is intimidating, but then you'd only have to buy it once and just print. Depending on your printer it could be cheaper (though a bit of a pain) to print than buying a wkbk for each child. Just an option to consider. Or if you have a tablet dc could complete on the tablet instead, no printing at all!
  5. One thing that held me up with SOTW 1was feeling like I needed to read all the extras in the right chapter. So if something hadn't come from the library yet, or we just hadn't gotten to the extra read-alouds (some chapters we had so many!) I would delay moving on in SOTW. Big mistake in terms of getting through history! No more of that. I'm just putting them all in a pile now and we read the next thing regardless of whether we've already moved on in SOTW. I can just preface it with 'Remember when we learned about X?' and it's been fine. So my advice is don't worry about fitting it in perfectly, pull it out when it seems like it fits and if you don't get to it just keep plugging along. :)
  6. You are going to have to link for us. All the comb binders I've seen do not fold over to lay flat, nor do they have the ability to open to any spot to add pages. That's the major thing for me, it is such a pain to add pages to my comb-bound books, it's the whole reason I want a proclick. But I also don't get how it can fold back on itself and still lie flat? If the spine is wide enough to put a label on it seems the spine would be too thick for this. Maybe we need pics too! ;)
  7. Before I had a scanner I did this at a local mom and pop copy store, but it was pricey. Now I have a printer with a scanner and feeder, I can just put a stack in the feeder (duplex even) and let it go while I'm doing other things. But thousands of pages? That would take forever. Hope you can find something that is reasonably priced. Maybe you could pay your dc to do it for you? ;)
  8. Ok, besides the whole folder thing, you've got me wondering why I haven't done this woth our SOTW pages before! I just print what we need and keep them in a folder to pull out when we need them. Having it already to go like this would make it so much easier!
  9. Hmmm...our crate is in our main living area. Often our dog will go crazy whining or barking at the back door because he knows someone is here but can't see them. If I put him in his crate he will happily, quietly observe and even nap (after the initial crazy-must-say-hello-to-everyone phase!). So he isn't isolated, he's a part of things. That doesn't help in your allergy situation, though.
  10. You can do it! I've gone cold turkey a couple of times and day three was the worst! I don't know what you are allowed with the anti candida diet...Are you allowed nuts? Raw cashews have a sweet taste to me. And peanut butter (with no added sugar, just nuts) with sliced apples really helped, but apples can be really sweet so it helped me over the hump. Is pb considered processed?
  11. Love having a FL and will never go back to a TL. I loved the Samsung one we had in the US, it had this great feature that you could add something to the wash for a minute or so after you'd started the cycle. I so miss that! It seems I constantly find a dropped sock or something that should have gone into the load. I leave the door open between uses but haven't really noticed a smell. As long as you get one that has a cleaning cycle or sanitary cycle you shouldn't have a problem with odor. Depending on your height, I also really like having it sit on one of those platform drawers so you don't have to bend down so far to reach into the tub. Little ones can still easily reach with a small stool. I actually have a drawer and the dryer stacked on top, the dryer would be out of reach for many. (But old Aussie houses are not made to accomodate both side by side, in fact I've only got one plug and am constantly unplugging one to use the other!)
  12. I love watching the bats in our town every night at dusk flying off in search of food. Or if we happen to be at the lake, seeing them dip down in the water mid-flight for a drink. We have quite the bat colony here in one of our big local parks. I probably would have locked up the room and called animal control. I'm too scared of the rabies factor after a child in Qld died from it earlier this year, he'd gotten it from a scratch from a bat but they didn't know until it was too late. It is interesting that our attitudes are different towards 'icky' animals (as Mergath said above!). I feel bad for the mice we've caught in traps, but not bad enough to do live traps and relocate them or something. I wonder why. I guess the thought of them in my pantry is just so gross, I want them out. I heard one get caught recently, heard it squeal, but it wasn't long before it was dead from what I could tell. I admit to vacuuming spiders on a regular basis. Does that mean they are dying a painful, prolonged death? (I'm asking seriously, I've always wondered.) I tell myself they are smothered instantly by all the dirt in my vacuum. :leaving:
  13. Have you seen Looledo? Videos to watch to make crafty things. http://www.looledo.com/index.php I just have a couple of tubs of crafty junk supplies that are unorganised, throw-it-in-a-tub stuff. Then I have a plastic cart with drawers that contains other supplies, more organised with small tubs inside it to keep like items together. The big tub sits under the school table, the drawers sit right next to it so the kids can sit at the school table and have it all accessible and put it away after they are done (with nagging reminders!).
  14. This. Shrug. Discuss and move on. I'm sure OP that you'll come across things that make you uncomfortable in many things you read to your kids. I mean, ancient Romans thought gladiators fighting to the death or being killed by animals was great entertainment. I'm guessing you'll be reading about that with your kids at some point. :D And I concur that I like Curious George much better than Babar! But for some reason the kids love Babar too...
  15. Grapevine has both an OT and NT overview, but it doesn't cover absolutely everything if that's what you are looking for. Easy to use, the kids like it. You didn't say what age? (Okay now I see your siggy in your second post but not your first. How in the world does that happen???) Grapevine would be good for those ages. Picturesmart Bible is another I've looked at but don't own, I think it would be good for my oldest but I'd like to wait until my next one can do it also, he seems a bit young for it at 5yo.
  16. Looking at their website where you sign up for the newsletter it looks like they have made it into something that can be used seperately. I'm guessing that it covers the same material as in Level 3. I know I'm signed up for their newsletter but for some reason I don't have that download. You could always try it with dc but if they are not interested you don't have to worry since you know it will be covered later.
  17. What they said! :) A printed copy comes in the Level 3 materials.

Recently I was reading a thread that I thought was about Classical Conversations. I got pretty far into it before I realised it was about community colleges. The thread made much more sense after I figured that out! But most of the time it's easy to figure out what the thread is referring to.
  19. And...going firward don't buy a book without the ISBN number listed! Unless it's pretty old of course, older than this one. If you've got the ISBN you can at least google it to find out what it should look like.
  20. We've been very happy with our old Volvo station wagon. There's even room for the dog in the back! It's been our sole car for about four years now. We like it so much that when it was time for a seven-seater (we will soon be a family of six!) we went with another Volvo, an SUV this time. Technically the station wagon is a seven-seater, it has two rear-facing seats that can fold down when not in use. Very convenient but not for permanent seating.
  21. Aimed at preschoolers...Picture Book Activities by Trish Kuffner. http://www.amazon.com/Picture-Book-Activities-Preschoolers-Childrens/dp/0881663921/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372777529&sr=8-1&keywords=picture+book+activities May be too young but could be a good jumping off point depending on what you are looking for. I agree with the FIAR suggestions as well, maybe google for a craft or extra activity to go with each book. Delightful Learning is my favourite FIAR blog, she is very thorough with her blog posts for each book.
  22. I don't know. Maybe someone from the group told her that they were being asked to report her? I'm sure you are correct that fb wouldn't have released that.
