  1. yes, the West changed the liturgical new year to Advent sometime in the middle ages after the Schism. today is the Liturgical New Year for New Calendar people...13 more days for those on the Old Calendar. :001_smile:
  2. Yeah, you figured it out alright. I'm sure I can trust everyone to keep them quiet. ;);)
  3. LOL. This reminds me of the time my husband was convinced that a new couple at our old church were spies (for the US). They were in our small group so we were getting to know them better and I remember there were some indications he might be right. He's not type to go all conspiracy theory on me either, but I kept brushing him off reminding him to mind his own business. Unfortunately, my husband isn't exactly known for being tactful  and I guess I couldn't stand it anymore so he asked them after church one Sunday :svengo: Surprisingly, we never saw them again.
  4. After 19yrs of homeschooling I retired last year. My youngest two are in private school.
  5. I take Airborne at the first sign of illness or if someone in the family is sick. It usually helps.
  6. I remember BlueStocking Press... for some reason I didn't discover Rainbow Resource for a few more years (I don't know how I missed it!). Anyway, I often wonder what happened to those early homeschool sellers. The thing I remember is that the Elijah Company would sell you everything in their catalog for something like $1500! LOL. I remember laughing the first time I saw that. The other book/audio lecture that changed my life was Susan Schaeffer MacCauley's "For the Children's Sake." I still have the cassettes of her lecture. I just can't bring myself to get rid of them. My dh tried to transfer them to CD but the sound quality is terrible. :(
  7. great reflection! I reminds me of much of my journey (also went to a Greg Harris conference and only knew a few other hsers). My oldest homeschool grad is now a Ph.D candidate at John's Hopkins (genetics) and happily married. I'm no longer homeschooling but I do cherish those early exciting years. And..I agree -I love seeing all the diversity and changes within the homeschooling community.
  8. I do feel bad for the original poster. She was angry and venting her frustration about her SIL and cupcakes but it turned pretty quickly. That's one of the downsides of the internet...sometimes you can't take back what you said.
  9. Yes, that's the one... but then it got goofy and everyone was talking about being pro-cupcake (and kilts!) as a way to calm the situation. It was pretty fun to read, but it was a LOOONG thread full of silly fun and it was eventually locked.
  10. This is what I was afraid of, but I figured if anyone know it would be the Hive. :001_smile:
  11. We have very squeaky wood floors in our kitchen and ceramic tile in our master bath. There is no way to get to the floor joists from underneath (finished basement and then main floor). Is there any other way to fix it without tearing out the wood or tiles? Or am I doomed to listen to the squeak until we re-do the bathroom?
  12. Agreeing with Juniper. That first week or two is hard! That's why Atkins has the 2week induction (very low carbs): to rid your body of them. Have lots of lc snacky things around for your go-to when you have cravings.
  13. Wow, sounds like fun. I'm trying to plan an overnighter for our anniversary in Oct. Let us know how you like the place and I may pm you for the name.
  14. I think it should be your son's call since it is something for him.
  15. Yes, there is baggage. His mom is the Kennedy who committed suicide a few months ago.
  16. Yes, I think it seems a bit off -not because he's young, but because he's still in high school. There's a lot of differences between being in high school and being a 22yr old adult.
  17. I'm so sorry it wasn't happy news. Take care of yourself.
