  1. They're not shacking up. They just got married.
  2. it's a self contained suite with a separate entrance & its own kitchen and supposedly they're on their own with food. That's just it, isn't it - they're nowhere near being even remotely established. I believe his plan was to pursue a psych degree & go into counselling but here that requires at least a Master's & yeah, at 6 courses a year it will take ages just to do the BA. Not sure about grades. I don't know why neither of them seems to be working - most post-sec students here work in fast food or retail or temp in offices or unskilled construction labor etc, if not during the school year, then for sure in the summer. Most schools here have 4 months break so if you're frugal, you can save up a fair bit to carry you through the following school year.
  3. Nice....but NOT the Olympics. That was at the Hopman Cup I think. Last January.
  4. This is sort of a s/o from the college board thread about kids living together & how much parents will support.... I heard about a situation recently. I'm not sharing it as gossip but because dh & I were both curious how people would handle it if it were your child. A 20 yo young woman, sheltered, no real previous boyfriend, kind of a unsettled upbringing (no solid academics in their homeschool, tried going to high school, couldn't handle it, quit, came back, some mental health issues, dropped out again etc etc.) I think some p/t retail job experience but currently no job. Going part time to a community college, taking a couple courses each semester. Nowhere near finishing any certificate or an associate's yet. One year ago met a man at this college. This man is 32 and a recovering alcoholic. He's had a series of no real jobs, travelled a fair bit (did the hippy travelling thing in Asia), no completed post-sec education or trade or training, currently doesn't work. A few years ago became very religious and 'turned his life around'. Last year started attending college, also taking 3 courses/semester. Has no job (not even in the summer), no savings, and is carrying student loans. He courts this girl, she converts to his faith, he proposes and she agrees to marry him a year after meeting him. <---- edited to add: There was a wedding. They're married. Woman's parents do not support the marriage. They feel the woman hasn't had a chance to live her life & get to know her own ideas yet and she's not finished her education. They also do not share the faith (a conservative faith which it seems likely eschews family planning). But her parents are letting them live rent free in a self contained suite in their home (now that they're married). Keeping in mind that having adult kids living with family is pretty normal here because real estate prices are SO out of control..... but if you really thought this entire marriage was a bad idea, would you let them live there? Because I'm thinking I'd say no. But the parents worry that then they'd lose her completely..... What would you do?
  5. Yeah, I'm an atheist & I'm judgemental. Since you asked, I'd tell her this is weighing on you & you cannot continue the friendship until something changes. Fwiw, I was once entrusted with information about a relationship. I lasted about 5h before I called the person and told them they had to tell their s/o or I would. It was wrong, it was immoral & I wanted nothing to do with it. I wouldn't have looked for this info, I wasn't snooping; they chose to tell me. Once I became aware of it, I couldn't NOT act. It wouldn't have been fair to the other person. I agree that it is enabling & it is enabling something that is wrong & that hurts people.
  6. It's real now. It's not abstract people who are being hurt. It's the way we are programmed - no matter how much we try, I think we have very powerful programming to care more about kith & kin, our village, our tribe, our community. Are you asking us for input on what you should do?
  7. My dogs clean up spills but then they slobber and drool and lick the floor and leave collossal dog spit stains all the time. One of mine is also absolutely incapable of actually drinking without spilling. He also walks away with 1/4 cup of water in his flews & then drips in a big stream. No matter how many mats and towels and splatter guards around the water bowls, there's a perpetual water feature in that part of the house. Needless to say our laminate is buckling from water damage in many places LOL I want luxury vinyl plank next.
  8. I have laminate & no small kids but lots of very hairy dirty pets. I either vacuum or use a flat head dry mop every day. Every few days I wash it. If I stretch it to a week it's really bad... FWIW, while I'm glad we ripped up the carpets, carpets hide a lot more dirt. I pretty much vacuumed daily when I had the carpet but if I skipped, it didn't show. My floors look dirty except for about 30 min right after I clean them. The darker the floor, the harder it is to keep it looking clean so if possible go for as light a stain as possible.
  9. CBC Spark (a radio program about technology) did a very interesting segment on reading & what modern technology is doing to our ability to deep read.... It's an audio clip of 15 min. http://www.cbc.ca/radio/spark/spark-251-1.2848260/scanning-and-skimming-1.2848263
  10. Oh now I think it's a replay because I've seen some of these clips before. I so want a bear cub.
  11. I think it is live? The sign in the bottom left toggles back & forth from Live to Highlights. Live is in bold now. I think it goes to highlights at night. If you look directly at the youtube channel it's got the live 'red dot' recording button on it too.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtUucAcQoaE
  12. If you're getting bored of the Olympics, the bears at the Katmail National Park are frolicking. It's breakfast time. http://explore.org/live-cams/player/brown-bear-salmon-cam-brooks-falls The cubs are SO SO SO adorable.
  13. I suggest you look for a brand that contains chelated ferrous bisglycinate This is much gentler on the stomach, causes way fewer side effects & this study demonstrates that a lower dose was as effective in pregnant women. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24152889 I like SISU but I don't know if you have that in Canada. However, I know they get their iron from Albion Ferrochel, one of the leading manufacturers of chelated ferrous bisglycinate & that ingredient is avail in the US in a bunch of retail brands. There's a list here: http://www.albionferrochel.com/index.php/where-to-buy/retail-brands you can also read about their product there and why it's a superior form of supplemental iron.
  14. I would search the Happy Cow app for a vegan restaurant or cafe you haven't tried yet within a couple hour driving distance and head on out to try it and maybe do some sightseeing.
  15. I use google flights. It lets you mess around with dates & will often suggest different routes for best deals.
  16. In baking & cooking, swap it in for honey or molasses.
  17. Both my kids were just over 6,000 each. (crowding + class 2 malocclusion) I've just been quoted the same for my own teeth + a small family discount.
  18. I loved seeing the Brazilian Judoka winning Brazil's first gold.
  19. I know. I've dragged out these stats before & it's like nobody wants to believe The Wonder Years left a trail of dead bodies.
  20. I've memorized the # because I visit Nate Silver's 538 website all the time to get the latest projections :)
  21. I highly prioritize this expense. It's super duper important in our family & anyone who has a fitness related expense is encouraged to pursue it. It's right up there behind shelter food & insurance. Well, I guess my kids' tuition and the pets are above but pretty much everything else is below. I'd cut all sorts of stuff before I cut someone's fitness & activity expenses. And my adult dd is often my accountability buddy so I pay for many of her classes though she does pay for some..... But for a long time I was paying for both of us, 3-5 classes/week & most of our classes run $9-13. I'm in perimenopause & am trying hard to lose the remaining bit of belly flab now (my bmi is low & I'm fit but I have belly rolls & I think my body fat % is still too high). I really think I only have a small window because it gets so much harder when you're on the other side. So I'm actually considering adding a few things....
  22. You're veering from the point which was: The stats indicate children were abused at higher rates when there was more laissez faire parenting & less supervision. I suspect part of the reason is that it was peers & just slightly older children who were responsible for the abuse but I also suspect it's complicated. That data though is not. You can't say children are being abused at the same rate because they're not. The fact that many abusers are trusted inner circle people doesn't change the fact that abuse rates are down at a time when supervision and parental involvement are up.
  23. I'd try the math. Hire a tutor. The math required for a liberal arts associates may be within reach. It's usually just algebra & doesn't require calculus. She doesn't need a great grade, just whatever the pass is. Or I'd consider early childhood education or the certificates in community care (for looking after people with disabilities etc)
