  1. In your opinion. Others might have just as strong opinions about what defines a proper religion. For instance someone could say the only legitimate religions are ones that don't proselytize and don't judge others.
  2. They're weekly. I think the point is that low income families usually rely on a patchwork of after school childcare options and this might end up being one of them even if it's not their first choice to have their children in a missionary program.
  3. They're not. That's the point . This is literally what is happening. Good News sets up club in a school. Satanic Temple tries to set up club . They are a legitimate religious group regardless of what anyone else thinks of their beliefs. They have been blocked by one school district already.
  4. ps, my dogs are well trained. They don't chase bikes or joggers. But I don't expect that of everyone & I don't expect a dog to not react to something suddenly coming up behind them. When they're startled, they react very quickly, which I for one appreciate. If an attacker came running up behind me & tried to touch me or tackle me, my Daisy girl would have been at his throat in a blink.
  5. I suggest leaving a space the length of a standard leash which is about 6 feet. However with the darned flexi leashes now, the dog might need a bigger radius. Generally, I would leave a car's length. Just like when you cycle past someone, it's courtesy to call out & say for ex "on your left" .... letting the person know so they can move to the right a bit & give you a bit of room. I thought these were common sense but people seem to have this weird Lassie cartoon vision of dogs....or veer completely to the other side and think all dogs are murderous hellions intent on killing everything. Do not startle dogs. Let sleeping dogs lie. Do not interfere with a dog that's eating. Do not approach dogs you don't know - wait for them to approach you if you want to be social. Don't shove your hand in front of a dog's nose. Don't go 'pat pat pat' on top of a dog's head.
  6. dry food is horrible for them. It's directly linked to the explosion in feline diabetes & also implicated in renal failure, bladder stones etc. "The three key negative issues associated with dry food are: 1) water content is too low 2) carbohydrate load is too high 3) type of protein - too high in plant-based versus animal-based proteins" http://www.catinfo.org/
  7. But it is happening. These clubs are arising DIRECTLY in response to the Good News clubs. In fact, the Satanic Church applies to offer a club only in schools which have allowed the Good News Evangelical clubs. Good News apparently is in >4000 schools in the US. Someone wrote a book about this https://www.amazon.ca/Good-News-Club-Christian-Americas/dp/1586488430 (haven't read the book so can't comment on it..)
  8. most likely moths. They can make big holes if left undisturbed. I'd bag all the clothes and throw in the garbage. Vacuum the closet thoroughly, all the walls, ceiling, nooks and crannies. If it has carpet, pull it up. Seal any crevices with caulk.
  9. Hallucinations are really not that rare & not only associated with severe psychiatric conditions.
  10. We have severe GAD in our family. CBT and meditation help tremendously. Meds if needed. Explore if she has actual panic disorder because the treatment for that is a bit different than GAD. But definitely I'd be looking for someone who does CBT with kids - it's a 12-15 week program and the skills they teach really work.
  11. & yet James Randi's million dollar paranormal challenge was never claimed
  12. Not only that - some atheists proselytize. & some might steal the marketing tactics of other organizations to further their own ends.
  13. I ditto that ANY canned or pouched food is better than dry. I actually think many of the Fancy Feast canned & pouch recipes are good. The key is to look for one with as little grains/veg/fruit as possible. Cats really just need meat & organs. Many of the FF recipes include wheat & corn but the amounts seem fairly low as they're down in the ingredients list.
  14. Let's say there is: so what? Why can't they be provocative with their name? I find in many social movements, a variety of approaches and groups work better than just one approach. You'll get the polite letter writers, the silent witnesses, the ones who never talk about it but will answer questions, the ones who initiate conversations, the ones who challenge others' views, the ones who leaflet, the ones who have t-shirts & bumper stickers, the ones who have rude t-shirts & bumper stickers, the ones who protest, the ones who protest disruptively (& block roads!), the ones who stage sit-ins, the ones who make a huge whole media spectacle... It takes many voices in many approaches to get people's attention, to get issues on the social change agenda, to get people thinking. It's what makes modern participatory democracies vibrant & healthy - the freedom of expression in all its many varied ways - including provoking & being rude.
  15. Also you don't get to define what 'real' atheist is.
  16. there are evangelical religious groups that seek to convert & keep all their people, that seek to inject their faith into all things. Many are militant & offensive. I don't see why atheists cannot be evangelical & missionary as well.
  17. I rent the big wide track machine from the store. I also use the cleaning solutions they recommend + the hottest water from the tap & sometimes add Nature's Miracle or Pure Ayre to the solution.
  18. I think you are expecting too much. The activity was done and the craft completed. They're going to replace a piece. If you're not happy with the value/quality of their kits, I think you could leave a review and/or stop purchasing from there; it's very much a personal judgement whether something is 'worth' it but I think that's up to the buyer to ascertain ahead of time. The whole returns/refunds thing is killing small businesses btw.....
  19. Some of us find the dominant Christian ideology to be disrespectful, as well the constant obvious religious pandering. When an American politician can end a speech without invoking ________ (geeee, I'm debating whether to use what I consider an accurate term but most would consider 'disrespectful' ... but I don't want to get suspended off the board & mostly I actually am a nice person.....) when they can end without saying that thing that everyone feels they have to say..... then I might feel like we've arrived at a place that we can mutually communicate with respect. The fact that "Americans like atheists less than they like members of most major religious groups." makes us a pretty disrespected group.
  20. My Daisy (malamute x gsd) is not well. Current contenders are a mini stroke or a splenic bleed. Xray non conclusive other than "that's kinda weird". Bloods won't be back till tomorrow. :( Girly is not well at all :(

thx everyone. She's still with us but pretty flat. It's possible this is just fatigue from the hemorrhage and she might still bounce back a bit but also possible that she won't.... We're snuggling & will be making popcorn to share while watching the olympic opening ceremony. One of her favourite things is snuggling and watching tv together.

  21. It would be really nice if people could refrain from calling people who support this or the FSM as 'immature' and 'childish' It wouldn't fly to call any other beliefs or believers that.
  22. It seems to me groups can call themselves what they want. I don't think many people would support a move to start arguing with the tenets of one group or another or picking apart which has 'real' beliefs. From their FAQ "We do not believe in symbolic “evil.†We embrace blasphemy as a legitimate expression of personal independence from counter-productive traditional norms."
  23. I don't understand why being polite has become the end all and be all. Being polite is not what wins rights and changes society. When fighting for separation of church and state, and at a time when people in the US are all shouting about religious freedom but what they really mean is Christian religious freedom. groups like this are vital.
  24. IMO the only time leasing makes sense is if you can write it off as a business expense. Then the pro is that it's a write off & you don't have to worry about caring for/repairing a depreciating asset. Otherwise, it's all con in my books, with the main one being : you don't own the car. Making loan payments at least goes towards an asset you will own clear at the end.
  25. I think the best thing would be to give the puppy back. I don't think things will get better for you & it's possible they might get worse. Allergens seem quite frequently to trigger increasingly bigger reactions & given that it's not just one person, odds are against all of you improving and getting to a tolerable base level. Your children might outgrow their allergy but you're unlikely to. The amount that a certain dog triggers you does vary but I wouldn't count on being ok with any dog. This article suggests you can build up a tolerance - which probably happened with your previous dog but I gather the problem sometimes is that an abscence from the trigger can cause a much bigger reaction when you're exposed to it again. http://www.familyallergy.com/Blog/0/Any-Category/5/Allergy-Shots-Help-with-Pet-Allergies If you're determined to have dogs, I'd give this guy back, do allergy shots and after some time try fostering.
