  1. Sorry, that's a long title. DS is 10. We've been homeschooling for 14mos now. He is finally on grade level in math and gaining ground every day in reading. (He's gone from a 1.6 to a 3.6 in 14mos!) Teaching Textbooks 4 and lots of reading/remediation. By fall of 2012, he will be on 5th grade level in all subjects (I anticipate) except writing. My plan for spring of 2012 is to work on writing, narration, and dictation - in addition to reading and math. Apologia Zoology 3 and Easy Grammar 3/4 round out our current curriculum. We've been playing with SOTW vol 1, but I have read that ancient history is begun again in 5th grade according to WTM. So I'm considering doing something else - maybe geography - next semester so as not to burn him out on ancients. For spring I'm also considering Winning with Writing 3 (as he has had no writing instruction at all) and Soaring with Spelling (we finished AAS 1 and 2 and burned out). DS is under-motivated, largely an auditory learner, hates writing/using a pencil, and likes for me to be right beside him at all times during lessons. We need some independence and a gentle approach. So what curriculum would you choose for a child in this situation?
  2. Mine means I didn't have a signature for a while and felt left out, so when I found a quote that spoke to me, I knew just the place for it. The lack of a curriculum list means I'm still insecure enough not to want to share that info with more seasoned parents.
  3. I have a Lego Advent Calendar in my cart. For the last two weeks, price has fluctuated by $5-7 almost daily - drop then back up; lather; rinse; repeat. Hang in there. I bet it comes back down next week.
  4. NM - send a letter of intent to homeschool by April 1st for the approaching school year and be ready to prove you schooled 180 days, if asked. No other regulations; no benefits. (I don't want benefits! The govt did a p!ss-poor job of educating my son when they had the chance. I don't need their help now.)
  5. I've been registered at Be the Match since 2007 when a a friend's daughter needed a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, neither of her two transplants were successful, and we lost her in 2008. Another friend has a 6yo son who is currently in need of a transplant. Databases *world wide* have been searched and there is no suitable match for this boy. None. In the whole world. Latinos are statistically under-matched because of low registration. My sister won't register because "harvesting the marrow will hurt." Yeah, that's nothing compared to the pain of losing a child. I called her selfish to her face.
  6. I get tons of information from this forum, but my main homeschooling support comes from an informal group of local homeschoolers who have become dear friends. We meet once a week for PE and lunch, we plan fieldtrips and parties, and bounce ideas off one another. In addition to PE, there are splinter groups that have started a small science co-op and an art co-op. To think that 10mos ago, I didn't know a single person who homeschooled here. We've come a long way, baby!
  7. DS is using TT4, doing a lesson per day, 4 days per week. He also does addition drill (still slow there) and multiplication drill each day.
  8. Thanks, G! Kalanamak, I'll check out that webcast as well. Thanks!
  9. But a new ring won't have been worn by mom. The mom thing trumps value/newness. I hope you can get it back. (((hugs))) I would totally feel the same way. I treasure the things I have that were also my mom's.
  10. At least I'm in good company! :D If I ever find out when this program is, I'll be sure to let y'all know.
  11. Lexile is a similar site. It took me a while to figure out lexile scores v. accelerated reader scores, but I do find it useful.
  12. I sent 40 pages of a timeline to Office Max last month. It cost me $20 plus tax. The color was far superior to what my 10yo color printer could produce.
  13. Absolutely agree He doesn't wish he'd done more; he wishes his name hadn't been dragged thru the (well-deserved) mud. That is a statement of self-protection, not true regret.
  14. That's what I found too, Dawn. Thanks though! Hope you are having a lovely Wednesday.
  15. I'm weeks late getting back to this, but I'm so glad I did. I didn't know that, Kristen! I will certainly pass it on. Thank you!
  16. I started DS10 on coloring while I read aloud this week. Can't hurt the fine motor skills and if it helps handwriting, then yippee! I agree that large spaces are problematic, so I found THESE geometric color pages. Lots of small spaces that require controlled coloring.
  17. That's the note I wrote for myself back in September, referring to a program I read about in the A&E magazine. Apparently I thought I'd be able to search the History Channel website to find this program. I was wrong. My search skills are stinky today. Does "real thanksgiving on history channel" ring any bells with anyone?
  18. Oh, hun. So many things to adjust to right now.... I'd take at least one and maybe two if I was able (we live in NM). All I can do suggest looking for a rescue group nearby and bumping this to page one. (((hugs)))
  19. Just one of the reasons I enjoy this board: the give and take, the discussion of how and why. So now I know to make sure DS is solid in understanding long multiplication before introducing lattice as a fun trick. Thanks, y'all!
  20. I picked up Toontastic yesterday. Looks fun! Enjoy your new toy! I love mine!
