  1. Anyone have any success with using an ipad mini for sites like Fascinating Education? I've subscribed to their chemistry course, but it would be lovely if I weren't tied to a computer to use it!
  2. Does this app allow for multiple users? If I buy it I would want all my kids to be able to use it. I'm brand new to the iPad. Any advice on how to find the best educational apps would be appreciated. I did get Dragonbox 12 per Bill's recommendation and it is addictive. Azalea
  3. We got an ipad through our charter school last week and have already put some cool apps on there but does anyone have any great app finds or suggestions? So far we have Google Earth (I want Google Sky but I don't think we can since we don't have GPS with the ipad) Free Books Math drills (although I don't know the exact name) and a few more that I can't remember but that's about it. We are on a tight budget so they can't be expensive. :bigear:
  4. My girls just got ipads today. Due to a special grant they each got an ipad 2 with heavy duty case. I am looking for free or cheap apps---but will pay for some REALLY good ones they will use. 15dd is still working on multiplication/division facts and is at about a 5th grade level overall. 16dd is the one I would like the most apps for. She is learning basic addition and subtraction facts but can count money quite well. A telling time one would be great (using analog clock). She can win at stack the states and likes games like that. She is at about a 2nd grade level for some things but reads at a 4th grade level. Her speech therapist uses some apps for therapy so we will bring her ipad with us and see which ones might be useful for home use. I would love some fun but not timed games that are at a 2nd-5th grade level--spelling, cross word puzzles, word searches, reading, math, even just fun---that don't look too babyish for a teenager to be seen playing. They both have their email and facebook set up:001_smile:
  5. I just downloaded Dragonbox for the boys and they love it almost as much as their mother does. I happen to enjoy basic algebra, but it sure is fun to see the 5 yo doing so well with the concepts in the game. We are headed on a long road trip later this week, and I was thinking we needed a few more games to cycle through. Any favorites?
  6. Please share your favorite educational iPad Apps for toddlers and preschoolers. Also, does anyone know of any website that does a good job reviewing children apps? There are so many new ones every day and some websites I have found are pretty dated.
  7. I decided to splurge and get an ipad with my tax refund. :D What are some of you or your kids favorite apps? And I'm looking for educational ones too? :bigear:
  8. So, yesterday my husband's ancient computer finally bit the dust, and we're in the market for a new Mac. His thought is that as long as we're spending a small fortune at the Apple store anyway ;) we might as well go for broke (semi-literally, lol) and get an iPad as well. He says we could make good use of it for school, but...I don't know. We already have a MacBook and two iPhones, and will be purchasing a new desktop. Would you recommend an iPad for homeschooling purposes? If you have one, what do you use it for? Was it worth the money? I'm off to take the kids to swimming but will check back later for the verdict of the Hive. :tongue_smilie: Help me out! I'm really tempted but don't want to spend the money if it's not worth it. Thanks!
  9. What's new?? What's awesome? Especially formtheover grade 3 crew? I see tons of apps for little kids, learning to read etc. How about some for older kids? I just saw: Bob Bones....name the bones in the skeleton A Chem app....where you can mix formulas A Zombie Pirate Grammar app:D And some science videos.... We also have Mango...from the library, which is a foreign language app....very cool. Please share your favorites!
  10. I am not sure if I should even admit this, but I have so much curricula sitting on my computer in PDF form because I didn't want to keep another binder around or pay to have it printed up and spiral bound. Good stuff: Lively Latin, Trail Guide to World Geography, Miquon Math, Basic Not Boring workbooks. Last night I did the first few pages of Lively Latin in Notability and felt the whole homeschool revolve. Thank you thank you thank you Bill!
  11. Here's a chance to pick up a few last-minute Christmas presents! EA has over one hundred iPad and iPhone titles for sale today for $0.99. Here are some titles: Scrabble Scrabble for iPad (Normally $9.99) Monopoly Monopoly for iPad (Normally $9.99) The Game of Life The Game of Life for iPad (Normally $6.99) Battleship Battleship for iPad (Normally $4.99) Risk: The Official Game for iPad (Normally $6.99) Yahtzee HD (Normally $4.99) Trivial Pursuit Master Edition for iPad (Normally $4.99) Tetris for iPad (Normally $7.99) FIFA Soccer 12 Madden NFL 12 NBA Jam Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 From a different vendor: A Charlie Brown Christmas for $0.99 (Normally $6.99)
  12. Ok, so here I am testing the new iPad out and trying to get what I feel dd8 will need for school, and some super cool apps to play with Christmas morning. I have so far....dropbox and notability. What do you feel are your must haves. This is to be primarily dd8's iPad, as her sisters dominate the net books. I will only be using it in relation to getting her work on it. We want educational as well as pure entertainment value. Maximize it's use and potential. ( did I mention how cool this is??? It's going on my b'day wishlist!!!)
  13. I've synced it, updated its software, downloaded the Kindle app and the wonderful "Star Walk" app, sent a couple of texts to Aunt M-mv's iPhone, and, yes, installed "Angry Birds." There must be more to this than that. Educate me. What apps do autodidacts need? What is this thing really for? Why do the photos I've taken with it seem fuzzy? Can I text someone who doesn't have an iPhone? How? Why is "Angry Birds" so durned popular? Why is my Kindle crying? As always, many thanks in advance for your replies. I appreciate your help.
  14. I have been dreaming of using things like the MEP student workbooks on the iPad rather than printing them for a long time, but have not found a good tool for doing so (if someone has found the perfect tool let me know). I'm sure many Math Mammoth and CSMP users wish for the same thing. Well the other day I downloaded the Notability app for $0.99. It is almost perfect. There is one flaw. One can not "pinch-to-zoom" if you want to write in a very small space. Otherwise it is very easy to use ones finger to "write" answers onto the PDF (in a variety of colors, and thicknesses). It even has a "highlight" option that is semi-transparent that came in very handy for some of the MEP problems where we had to "color" objects but did not want to obliterate them with opaque. The lack of "pinch-to-zoom" does make this app imperfect. But for 99 cents some of you want to grab it (it is 80% off at this moment). The app has many other features including voice recording (that I have not explored). I have been in contact with the developer and they have been surprisingly responsive to improving the zoom functionality. Anyway, some of you may want to grab it and see if it works for you. Oh. The easiest way I have found thus far to deal with the PDFs is to use the free app "Dropbox" on my main computer, drop the PDF files into Dropbox, and in a short time they show up in the Dropbox menu in Notability. Pretty slick! There are also Cloud based options I have not delved into yet. Maybe some of you iPad users will like this app. Bill
  15. There are twelve of them. http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/mcgraw-hill-school-education/id413312889
  16. I couldn't find anything by searching ... is anyone using an app to plan and track their homeschooling? I mostly need a calendar to keep track of deadlines, daily to-do list, and some way to note what got done (either by completing an assigned task or adding to to the calendar). Whichever I choose I will also want to use for work as well. I am looking at these two: LifeNotes :) To Do $4 (app store) Todo Task Manager $5 (app store) I'm very visual, and I like to see at-a-glance how things are organized. Clicking through multiple menus to find things won't work for me. Both of these look like they are well laid out ... which would you choose? Or would you choose a different one altogether?
  17. So we just got an iPad and are trying to load it with educational things. We got stack the states yesterday and my kids are loving it. While watching them, I realized how great it would be to have a game like that but where I could load my own questions to ask. I'm still trying to figure out how to find apps and I'm not having much luck unless I search for a specific name. I thought I'd ask here if anyone has something like this to recommend. So is there any drill kind of games where I can customize the questions/answers? Thanks
  18. I searched first but didn't find anything. I am looking for recommendations for easy to use meal planning apps for the iPad. I have used menu mailer from http://www.savingdinner.com in the past and like the format but if there was a similiar app I would prefer that to just using the pdf menu mailers. What I like about the menu mailer Mis that the grocery list is put together for you, the week is planned out, it's affordable and healthy and the recipes taste good but aren't overly complicated. Is there anything like this for the iPad? For those of you who are using a meal planner I would love to know what you like and dislike about the one your using.
  19. If you like SimplePhysics, you will probably like the new free game by Andrew Garrison called Santa's Engineer. It is the same as SimplePhysics except the puzzles are Santa-themed.
  20. My kids are absolutely smitten with our iPad and we may be getting another one for Christmas. I really want to maximize its use for our homeschool. What are you favorites that you use constantly?
  21. DS7 is massively struggling with long division because he simply does NOT know his multiplication tables. Our children have always used Quarter Mile Math on the PC for drill, but it doesn't seem to be cutting it for this one. If you have an iPad app that your child LOVES that has really helped them to learn their multiplication facts by heart, please post it here. Even paid apps! We need something now! Thanks in advance!
  22. Toontastic is free right now. ETA I got an iPad for my bday yesterday:party::party:
  23. The notability iPad app is 99 cents today. I am happy with noterize or paper port notes as it's now called but this app has auto sync with Dropbox so it's worth a try for 99 cents.
