We got an ipad through our charter school last week and have already put some cool apps on there but does anyone have any great app finds or suggestions? So far we have Google Earth (I want Google Sky but I don't think we can since we don't have GPS with the ipad) Free Books Math drills (although I don't know the exact name) and a few more that I can't remember but that's about it. We are on a tight budget so they can't be expensive. :bigear:

need iPad whiteboard app through FaceTime
zimom posted a topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'm looking for some type of WhiteBoard app that I can use at the same time as I FaceTime on my iPad2. A couple of friends and I will frequently FaceTime each other to help out the other's kids with math or other subjects but realize if we had a whiteboard application it would really be the icing on the cake. Is anyone familiar with something that would provide this function for us? Reg????? -
are there any you recommend? Thanks!

I want an iPhone/iPad app that I can use to keep track of my books. I've never used Library Thing (I don't even know if they have an app or if it's just a computer program), but I've heard about it on these forums, and I'm wondering how it works. Heres what I'm looking for in an app: A barcode scanner for ISBNs Automatically linked up to Amaon (or where ever) so that I can see the current price of books A way to see the total value of my library for insurance purposes A wish list feature so I can have my list of books with me if I'm at a library sale or used book store I'm willing to use multiple apps/ computer programs to get all these features, but it'd be really nice if I could have all these features on my iPod, which goes with me everywhere.

I tried to search the forums but couldn't find what I was looking for, specifically. We are getting an ipad for the family for x-mas and I would like to incorporate it into our homeschooling curriculum. I'm envisioning being able to focus on one while while the other works on the ipad. I am looking for suggestions for the best apps. Free ones are great, of course, but not necessary if it is a good one. I have an almost 9 year old son and a 5.5 year old daughter. For my 9 year old, I'd like an app or two to reinforce his math and spelling (i.e. not teach him these things but let him practice them in a fun way). I'd also like a geography app and any cool science apps (I have The Elements and SkyWalk in my wish list already.) Logic and mind-puzzles would be good too. For my 5 year old, I'd like basic, introductory math (i.e. simple addition, numbers greater than 10, etc.) and phonics or early reading apps. And, again, logic or mind-puzzles. Any suggestions for us? Any other "must have" apps for kids and family? Thanks very much! Heather

Delicious Library This is the most awesome application ever. $40 is a steal for it. You hold your books, videos, and whatnot up to your iSight (built-in) camera and the program reads the bar code. It's a terrific inventory program and as a homeschooler I can't live without it. And now it has an accompanying free iPhone app so you can transfer your library DIRECTLY to your iPhone. (I used to have to export my library to Excel and then bring it in through another app.) I'm not connected with this company and I make not a red cent for talking about them, but this company makes my life so much easier and they really know how to write well for the Mac/iPhone operating systems.

abc pocket phonics. It has a lite version you can try for free. My 4 year old loves it. It's helping his writing and letter sounds. He still hasn't figured out the blending, but he's getting a lot of repetition in! My 7 year old doesn't love it, but it's an easier way to practice cursive than normal writing, she generally doesn't like any writing practice. Writing with your finger is less painful than with a pencil when you're learning, that's been good for them both. It has a few minor phonics errors (it uses the short o when teaching old, for some reason) but is great for repetition overall.

Please share your favorite educational iPad Apps for toddlers and preschoolers. Also, does anyone know of any website that does a good job reviewing children apps? There are so many new ones every day and some websites I have found are pretty dated.

Forget educational... What iPad/iTouch apps do your kids actually enjoy the most? We're about to be on a many, many houred plane trip so I want to load up the devices with some new distractions. To just chip in, my 7 yos really enjoy... Myst (yes, the old computer game) Pizza Boy (it's sort of like Super Mario with pizza delivery) Doodle Jump Scribblenauts Remix Rocket Math (see, educational is okay too ;)) Any suggestions? The app store is so darn overwhelming.

I am not sure if I should even admit this, but I have so much curricula sitting on my computer in PDF form because I didn't want to keep another binder around or pay to have it printed up and spiral bound. Good stuff: Lively Latin, Trail Guide to World Geography, Miquon Math, Basic Not Boring workbooks. Last night I did the first few pages of Lively Latin in Notability and felt the whole homeschool revolve. Thank you thank you thank you Bill!

Ok, so here I am testing the new iPad out and trying to get what I feel dd8 will need for school, and some super cool apps to play with Christmas morning. I have so far....dropbox and notability. What do you feel are your must haves. This is to be primarily dd8's iPad, as her sisters dominate the net books. I will only be using it in relation to getting her work on it. We want educational as well as pure entertainment value. Maximize it's use and potential. ( did I mention how cool this is??? It's going on my b'day wishlist!!!)

Does anyone use this app as a way to filter content on an Ipod Touch? If it does a good job, I'd like dd to have it on her ipod.

I've synced it, updated its software, downloaded the Kindle app and the wonderful "Star Walk" app, sent a couple of texts to Aunt M-mv's iPhone, and, yes, installed "Angry Birds." There must be more to this than that. Educate me. What apps do autodidacts need? What is this thing really for? Why do the photos I've taken with it seem fuzzy? Can I text someone who doesn't have an iPhone? How? Why is "Angry Birds" so durned popular? Why is my Kindle crying? As always, many thanks in advance for your replies. I appreciate your help.

I have been dreaming of using things like the MEP student workbooks on the iPad rather than printing them for a long time, but have not found a good tool for doing so (if someone has found the perfect tool let me know). I'm sure many Math Mammoth and CSMP users wish for the same thing. Well the other day I downloaded the Notability app for $0.99. It is almost perfect. There is one flaw. One can not "pinch-to-zoom" if you want to write in a very small space. Otherwise it is very easy to use ones finger to "write" answers onto the PDF (in a variety of colors, and thicknesses). It even has a "highlight" option that is semi-transparent that came in very handy for some of the MEP problems where we had to "color" objects but did not want to obliterate them with opaque. The lack of "pinch-to-zoom" does make this app imperfect. But for 99 cents some of you want to grab it (it is 80% off at this moment). The app has many other features including voice recording (that I have not explored). I have been in contact with the developer and they have been surprisingly responsive to improving the zoom functionality. Anyway, some of you may want to grab it and see if it works for you. Oh. The easiest way I have found thus far to deal with the PDFs is to use the free app "Dropbox" on my main computer, drop the PDF files into Dropbox, and in a short time they show up in the Dropbox menu in Notability. Pretty slick! There are also Cloud based options I have not delved into yet. Maybe some of you iPad users will like this app. Bill

So we just got an iPad and are trying to load it with educational things. We got stack the states yesterday and my kids are loving it. While watching them, I realized how great it would be to have a game like that but where I could load my own questions to ask. I'm still trying to figure out how to find apps and I'm not having much luck unless I search for a specific name. I thought I'd ask here if anyone has something like this to recommend. So is there any drill kind of games where I can customize the questions/answers? Thanks

We got our littles, ages 4,6 & 8, 8gb iPod touches for Christmas. I would like to load some fun games from the app store. The games do not need to be educational and I don't mind paying for the games. What are your favorites for those ages? :bigear:

I searched first but didn't find anything. I am looking for recommendations for easy to use meal planning apps for the iPad. I have used menu mailer from http://www.savingdinner.com in the past and like the format but if there was a similiar app I would prefer that to just using the pdf menu mailers. What I like about the menu mailer Mis that the grocery list is put together for you, the week is planned out, it's affordable and healthy and the recipes taste good but aren't overly complicated. Is there anything like this for the iPad? For those of you who are using a meal planner I would love to know what you like and dislike about the one your using.

If you like SimplePhysics, you will probably like the new free game by Andrew Garrison called Santa's Engineer. It is the same as SimplePhysics except the puzzles are Santa-themed.

DS7 is massively struggling with long division because he simply does NOT know his multiplication tables. Our children have always used Quarter Mile Math on the PC for drill, but it doesn't seem to be cutting it for this one. If you have an iPad app that your child LOVES that has really helped them to learn their multiplication facts by heart, please post it here. Even paid apps! We need something now! Thanks in advance!
