  1. Me: "You're a good reader, [builder Boy.] You know a lot of words." Builder Boy: "Yeah, I learned them from my Mama." :001_wub::001_wub::001_wub: (That would be me.)
  2.:glare: Private schools can be just as bad (and sometimes worse) than public schools. Yes, even Christian schools.
  3. I'm using OPG with letter tiles and occasionally stamps. I'm planning on getting AAS in a few months. What really helped for ds was having the words on a white board, watching them being spelled, rather than reading out of the book. That and getting the letter tiles go him over his block. He works out of the book now when he wants to.
  4. You could move the pencil grip down to the bottom of the pencil, right where it starts to narrow. That should keep him from going lower and away from the grip.
  5. LeapFrog Talking Words factory. I cannot recommend this video enough. I would stop with the lessons for a few weeks and just let him watch the video as many times as he wants. If he still doesn't get it, then his brain might not be ready to "click."
  6. :bigear: I've seen some cool books on Amazon about teaching kids to sew, but those were all current, and not free.
  7. :iagree: Same here. OP, that is not too much food. That is healthy, and I would worry your friend has an eating disorder, or at least an unhealthy relationship with food. Or maybe she's just not a good cook.
  8. I haven never considered SpongeBob Squarepants (which is banned in my house) to be educational. I think they need to be more accurate in their study. :glare: Blue's Clues, on the other hand, has all of the characters being nice. If a small conflict arises they address it immediately. I can not think of any Sid the Science kid with the kids being mean or making snide comments either (all though I have not seen them all.) On Go, Diego, Go the worst that happens is animals being afraid of their natural predators, or the Bobo brothers, who always say they are sorry. And in Super Why they start with a conflict, but the whole issue is devoted to solving it. I consider all those shows to educational, and not causing aggression. ETA: these are the only tv shows that I let the kids watch. They are 5.5 and 3. ETA: also, Little Einsteins is awesome.
  9. :grouphug::grouphug: I'm so sorry. I watched the first season of Mad Men and saw the pregnant friend drinking and smoking and it made me wonder how a whole generation of babies survived and grew up okay! :glare:
  10. I don't know what KGB you are referring to, but I thought this was funny when I thought it was THE KGB. :D
  11. I don't know if it's a homeschooling thing but until recently ds5.5 had no idea what "favorite " meant. He didn't have favorites, he ether liked something or he didn't. He didn't compare things that way, and I kind of liked that.
  12. Everything in the back patio became "Egyptian." Egyptian broom, Egyptian shovel, even the water table became the Nile. At Builder Boy's request we're going to put the pool out tomorrow to swim in the Nile like Tarak. Builder Boy requested a "feast by the Nile." So I'm thinking about getting dates and making some kind of unleavened bread.
  13. Today the kids dressed up as ancient Egyptians as part of our history going through SOTW. On Monday I found instructions to make an Egyptian wig! Yesterday we made sparkly collars. Today we put it all together! :D
  14. Do what every takes the least amount of time so you have that "success" under your belt to make you feel good.
  15. If you google my name you get a lot of links about a pop-culture/cult-like following of a 90's tv show. I was born first. :glare: :toetap05:
  16. Thank you for posting this! I was just thinking the same thoughts yesterday!
  17. I use a frozen veggies mix with corn, peas, green beans, and carrots. I also add onion and potato. I have never had it with celery or mushrooms. It is okay to make it without it. :001_smile:
  18. I hate that. There is only one book in my entire life I have underlined. I use sticky notes. You can fit so much more info on the sticky note without ruining the book. And I color code the sticky notes.
  19. jenbrdsly's (member on here) Teaching My Baby to Read blog is great and has ideas exactly for that age range/early readers.
  20. Neat idea for a blog :001_smile: His post was very creative.
