  1. The only book I can think of that I've read more than once is Candide. Some of my favorites: Jane Eyre Pride and Prejudice The Source Pillars of the Earth and World Without End Rebecca The Murder of Roger Ackroyd The Stand Handmaid's Tale
  2. We just sort into colors and whites. I'd combine the reds with denim.
  3. I had this Rival and hated it. It cooked too hot, and the lid handle broke. Even the warm setting burned the food. Now I have this Hamilton Beach and am very happy with it.
  4. Freeze them! Super easy. Just wash them, pat dry, put them on a cookie sheet and pop them in the freezer for a few hours. When they're frozen put them in a freezer bag. I love this: Once they're frozen, they're great in soups and sauces. I wouldn't eat them raw though, as they're kind of mushy.
  5. While I agree with other posters that it's a good idea to tell her you think she's beautiful, I wouldn't "praise" her for it. I don't praise my kids for things over which they have no control. They have to earn praise. I don't want my kids to feel proud of their appearance or intelligence. They should be proud of effort and achievement, because those things depend on choices they make. I have no problems telling them they look pretty. I just don't see it as praise.
  6. Dd's phone battery isn't holding a charge, so we stopped by the Verizon store to pick up a new one. It was going to be $49, but they were out. Instead of placing an order, I decided to order one myself online. It took about 5 seconds to realize I've been getting ripped off horribly by buying them through Verizon. I found one at Amazon for $3.77, free shipping. Now I feel like an idiot, having bought several at that ridiculous price in the past.
  7. I like to look at mine, so I hung hooks on the wall. I have a few expensive things that I never wear, and they are hidden.
  8. People get very nervous about compromising airways. If you had had epiglottitis, you really wouldn't want anyone messing around in your throat unless they were prepared to intubate. They did it that way for your safety.
  9. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause lip and tongue sores and burning.
  10. Is Stephens flooded? We have dance competitions there every year. It's a beautiful auditorium. Hope it's okay.
  11. I didn't get that impression at all. I wish my kids adopted all the values that we've modeled and that they've been taught. Unfortunately it hasn't worked out that way.
  12. The doctor's office should call you with abnormal results. However, it is EXTREMELY common for things to fall through the cracks. I've seen some studies where up to 30% of abnormal results were never communicated to the patient. Always, always, always call for test results. It shouldn't be that way, but it's not worth taking the chance of missing something important.
  13. Go to the ER. They have the necessary equipment to look in there safely, or they might have you seen by an ENT person . Or you could call an ENT and see if you can get in today. :grouphug:
  14. :iagree: I'd definitely want to have him seen. And--I'd ask them to test for flu. There are some influenza outbreaks around. My kids have had hallucinations and acted really bizarre when they've had flu in the past.
  15. By the time the kid is diagnosed, they've had lice -on average- for a month. Sending them home at that point isn't going to do much good. Lice are a big nuisance, but they really don't pose much of a health problem. Overreaction, leading to over-treatment and unnecessary treatment with toxic shampoos can cause health problems. I like this school nurse's information:
  16. American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement:
  17. I need some art for my living room. I'd like to start buying originals but I have no idea where to look. Do you have a favorite artist? I looked at Etsy but am overwhelmed. I like: Neutral colors, earth tones Nature inspired Don't like: Bold bright colors Abstract Oils
  18. I don't have any religious/moral/philosophical objections, but I do have concerns about whether or not it does any good. I'm all about the evidence. Has the curriculum been field tested and intended and unintended results measured? So many of these types of curricula turn out to be useless, at best, and sometimes they actually cause damage. Years ago, there was a very extensive and expensive intervention for pregnant high school girls, designed to decrease rates of future pregnancy. When they actually looked at the impact, it turned out that the enrolled girls were getting pregnant again at higher rates than those not in the curriculum. Turns out putting a bunch of pregnant teenagers in a room together made them compete for having more babies. Schools love to implement new curricula (think whole language and cr*ppy reform math) without bothering to find out whether it's actually effective. Unless it has actually been shown to be beneficial, I'd really rather they stick to actual teaching. If it really decreases rates of sexual activity, stds, and pregnancy, then I'm fine with it.
  19. :iagree: This is why I don't like so many of the math curricula used in ps (Everyday Math, Investigations, etc). They spend way too much time on the why, and too little time on the how and practice.
  20. This is typical of new home construction at that price. ~3500 sq ft, 4 br, 2 1/2 baths
  21. I just rebooted and it came back. Have you tried that?
