  1. DD1 Just did the same thing. She says it's long not because of running off on tangents like Les Mis, or Moby Dick, but because there's about five plotlines running at the same time. It's kind of like a soap opera, she says.
  2. While that's true, at least in FL it's not unusual to have Phy Sci on the hs transcript so I put it on ours (esp since we did the labs.) Granted, my dd both had DE sciences on their transcripts so it wasn't an issue, but the PS did help prep them for the upper levels.
  3. I'll add my bit: Dd#1 decided to run x-country her 1st semester @ U. She'd been a full load cc student, under dual-enrollment, for 3 yrs. She finished her AA when her age-mates were finishing hs. The only quirk w/NCAA was having all the correct classes for them to check off. Ex--dd didn't take Am. History at the cc, but had taken it at home in what would have been 8th grade (age wise) & so was not on her hs transcript. They needed to see that class (& that it was a hs level class) in order to check that box. Also, both #1 & 2 were considered "freshman with credit" when they applied to schools (in-state privates & publics.) They were eligible for all the freshman scholarships, even though they were way ahead on the credit counts. Every school is different. Some don't care how many you have as long as they're DE/AP/etc, some do. Check the prospective schools for their policy--which is subject to change.
  4. Plus Apologia's Phy Sci does have labs so you'll get another lab science in just in case you're dc don't go though Physics.
  5. I have this book for sale right here on the boards. :D Mcgraw/Hill Marine Biology (Castro/Huber) 8th ed, International—College text $50 Same as US, but paperback
  6. Plus, when I went though, the girls are in the dorm a week earlier than everyone else.
  7. I think much has to do w/how your state view homeschoolers. Yes, our transcripts said "Official Homeschool Transcript," but that is not a big deal here in FL. If you go to any un-accredited school (which many private schools will fall into) the rules are the same regarding SATII or some type of outside confirmation on certain classes to U-FL as per below: Non-Accredited and Home Schools The University of Florida welcomes applications from all prospective students. Every freshman applicant is required to submit scores from either the SAT or ACT with Writing along with an official transcript of courses attempted, a measure of performance (traditionally course grades) and a validation of mastery or learning outcomes (usually expressed as “credit earned”). Students pursuing secondary preparation through a non-accredited or in a non-traditional manner where courses, grades and credits are not specified or monitored by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the University of Florida are asked to provide evidence of mastery or learning outcomes through means other than, or in addition to, a transcript. Such means may include SAT Subject tests, courses completed and graded through Florida Virtual School, or coursework from a regionally accredited community college or university. Non-traditionally prepared students should be able to validate secondary learning outcomes in English, mathematics, science, social studies and a foreign language. Validation in English is accomplished with SAT Writing or ACT with Writing. Students planning to use SAT Subject Tests should present results from the Math Level 2 test.
  8. I just sold a box of it & here's what was in it: TEXT Shearer: Greenleaf Guide the Famous Men of the Middle Ages c. 1992, TM & SM David Macaulay: Cathedral and Castle Gies: Life in a Medieval City Daugherty: The Magna Charta Rockwell: Glass, Stones & Crown-The Abbe Suger and the building of St. Denis Teacher Created Materials: Medieval Times LITERATURE Hodges: St George and the Dragon Morris: The Princess, the Crone, and the Dung-Cart Knight de Angeli: Black Fox of Lorne de Angeli: Door in the Wall Eliot: Murder in the Cathedral Wordsworth: Tales from King Arthur (ed. Lang) Chaucer: Canterbury Tales (modern English prose translation by Lumiansky) Kelly: Trumpeter of Krakow Gray: Adam of the Road
  9. Before you buy, check the housing web site to see what they allow. Also, has dd contacted roomie? With both my dd, the U only allowed 1 refrig./room so roomies need to know who's bringing what.
  10. Yep, what they said. Esp. since the cc grades are letters I did letters on everything to be consistent. I didn't weigh grades either. We were told at one campus tour that they re-figure GPA anyway to be sure all apps are equal.
  11. While our cc only req. Freshman comp I for Bio classes (I don't understand it, but there it is), both dd took it after having Apologia Bio. Yes, it counts as an advanced class on the transcript. As an aside, it doesn't hurt to look at what is required for entrance to your flagship state U. Ours are now req. 3-4 yrs science (with 2 labs) so any additional doesn't hurt. Plus if your dc are going to be Humanities majors, they'll be ahead of the curve in checking off the Core Curriculum classes.
  12. I would think where you live is a big factor. Dh is an a/c contractor. He never looks at tech school grads because they so often are un-teachable. They know the lingo & the basics, but it takes YEARS to be proficient. It's rare for contractors to be union in FL, so I don't know anything about that part of things. Dh & every contractor we know started at the bottom and worked their way up. They may have college, but the deciding factor is getting the state licenses which require experience.
  13. We did all the art stuff under dual-enrollment. We never could have afforded the lab fees for all the Ceramics classes both dd took, but they got great instruction and it was all FREE! FYI: We also counted hours for PE (sailing, swimming, 5k running, etc), along with private music lessons for credit there too.
  14. JMO: She's still young so of course lots can change in the next few years. She'll be more employable with an AA, than just a hs diploma. If she decides later to go for a bach. degree, she's that much further down that path, too. Here, as we only have a cc w/in 3hrs drive--many of our offices (gvmt & private) are staffed by AA holders. As long as she can type and knows the basic Office Suite programs, she shouldn't have a problem.
  15. At the UF site, they want to see SATII for FE unless it's taken from an accredited source. We killed two birds with one stone in having our dd take 2 semesters under DE at the cc. Counts for 1yr college & 2 yr hs. DD#1 had 1 yr through FLVS, but dd#2 hadn't taken any Spanish before the cc.
  16. It will be interesting to see what the perps Tox-screen reveals. UGH! The poor victim!!
  17. I investigated them, but all the reviews on Amazon were that it didn't work. (The old "too good to be true" story!) :glare:
  18. I'd add viola. There are tons of violinist, but since you have to read alto clef w/viola there are not as many players.
  19. Agreed. However for Humanities degrees & even the BS-Nursing programs (at least in FL) 2 maths are all that's required--College Alg and Intro to Statistics fill the bill. Plus if a potential STEM student needed the lower levels, it would be better to get them under DE than mess up the sequence later (IMO.)
  20. Even if you just get the usual pre-reqs out of the way, you'll be doing great. So Freshman English I & II, math through College Algebra, basic computer, & foreign language (check how many semesters will be needed for the prospective major) would be the first to look at, IMO. FYI: Here they can start DE after 9th grade if they have the scores. With our girls, 1st semester they took a fun class (an art usually) and an academic. By the 2nd semester, they were taking full loads so both graduated hs w/60+ hrs (#1 finished her AA, #2 was shy 2 classes.)
  21. Have you tried drinking Tonic Water? The Quinine in it is said to help w/leg cramping.
  22. Ditto. The only one I was unsure of was the Maimonides question.
  23. My sister did something like that. She went for 1st year, but then came home & worked for about 3. When she decided to go back, she paid for it herself (while living at home) and worked full time too. FYI: She'd originally thought she wanted to be a dental hygienist (as per ACT career suggestions), but ended up with a Marketing degree.
