  3. This morning, my DD asked me to look at the Raise.Me web site. https://www.raise.me/ I clicked around and read most or all of the legalese. I find it troubling that they do not show their actual street address and phone number. The only way I saw to contact them is via an email address. And then, on the URL above, among the Icons for some of the universities they say participate, is Tech (Texas Tech University). If they are one of the "College Partners" then I will assume Raise.Me is reputable. I suggested to DD she contact someone at TTU K12 (formerly TTUISD) to see if they can confirm that Tech participates with Raise.Me If anyone has experience with Raise.Me please share, positive or negative. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!
  4. Trying to narrow down our colleges we plan to apply, but having a bit of a hard time and really it will come down to money! Was wondering if anyone has had good experience with certain colleges that give good scholarships based on merit scholars, SAT scores, GPA, etc. (NOT based on a financial need doubt we would apply here but can't afford to give him much for college. :( Thanks for any advice! I am drowning over here! :willy_nilly:
  5. Recently I discovered a new site, Raise.me. At present there are about 200 colleges on the site with more being added all the time. The way it works is that students create a profile and follow schools they are interested in. The schools who are on Raise.me offer money for different things the students have done eg being part of clubs, community service, having a job, their ACT / SAT scores etc. My daughter sat down over the break and entered all her info and discovered that one of the schools she is interested in - University of Denver - will give her $14 000 per year just because of the things she has done! I think it is a great way for colleges to connect with students who are interested in them, instead of all the "junk mail" high schoolers get. I am hoping more colleges get on board soon but there are a lot of well known ones already participating. Students also get money if they get others to sign up, so my daughter would love it if your kids used her link if they sign up: https://www.raise.me/i/amyvan2 It is for all high schoolers - the earlier they start the better, and homeschoolers can definitely do it
  6. I am in my second semester at college, currently with a 4.0 GPA. Because of my stupidity 20 years ago (I stopped going to school in 1995 without dropping the classes and ruined my transfer GPA), I wasn't able to apply for any scholarships when I started school in the fall. So now I am preparing for next fall to get as many scholarships as possible to not only cover those classes but also pay back the little loan I had to take out for this school year. I am applying to all the ones available at my school and I have even applied for a United Autoworkers for one they are giving away since my mom worked in that industry for 20 years. But I am looking for some legitimate scholarships that you may know about without digging through 10,000 on these "scholarship" sites on the web. I figure all real scholarship opportunities are worth applying for, even the little ones so any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. If it is helpful, my situation is... 40 years old Single Mom 5 Kids One in college full time as well.
  7. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2012/07/08/education/edlife/8edlife_chart.html Colleges and Universities That Award Merit Aid (interactive table) http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/22/education/edlife/a-rise-in-students-receiving-merit-awards.html Help for the Not So Needy By CHRISTOPHER DREW July 17, 2012 ... Consider this run-through of the federal financial-aid form: a family making $75,000 a year might have to pay about $10,000 a year toward the cost of college before qualifying for need-based aid. With income of $150,000, the expected family contribution is $35,000 to $40,000. Student loans loom. “We certainly have found that with the recession in recent years, many middle-income families and even some higher-income families are looking for more aid,†says Earl D. Retif, vice president for enrollment management at Tulane University in New Orleans. Rather than lose bright students to less-expensive public colleges, universities like Tulane offer sizable amounts of aid based mainly on academic promise. While there are no national statistics post-recession, an Education Department study released last fall showed that the percentage of students receiving merit aid grew so rapidly from 1995 to 2008 that it rivaled the number of students receiving need-based aid. Recent College Board data from more than 600 nonprofit colleges and universities show that some are giving fewer students more money or stretching their dollars by handing smaller amounts to more students. But others are expanding the number of recipients as well as the amount of their awards. “Merit aid is one of the few bright lights in college financing now,†says Bonnie Kerrigan Snyder, a college counselor in Lancaster, Pa., whose new book is titled “The New College Reality: Make College Work for Your Career.†She describes how students are allowed to fall in love with a campus, and only later do parents figure out how they will pay for it, if they can. She advises putting financials in the forefront, sprinkling schools that offer generous merit aid on your college wish list. “Consider the schools that will want you,†she says. “That’s how you will uncover the best deals.†...
  8. dd13 plays piano, and wants to add an instrument next year. which ones are more likely to lead to a scholarship? I'm talking about a partial scholarship to play in the orchestra at a 'regular' school or department; she isn't aiming for a degree in music. She did have some group lessons in viola a few years back, and did very well for the time she was there. She's open to ideas!
  9. Based on a thread below. Feel free to add--there are places where I know someone who attended, visited, worked out or have heard of by reputation etc. These are merit scholarships, which range in the 1200-1400 range and corresponding GPAs. All awards are at least half tuition or more. Eastern University, PA Templeton Honors College Union University, TN Scholars of Excellence Howard Payne University, TX Academy of Freedom Honors Program Azuza Pacific University, CA Westmont College, CA Mount Vernon Nazarene University, OH Honors Program Malone College, OH Georgetown College, KY (Not a CCCU school, not sure how Christian it is)
  10. I'm about to go bookmark happy on scholarships for kids from K-12 age. Is there any interest in looking at these? I'd be glad to post on a running thread if there is. Just askin'. August is generally open season on this stuff.
  11. Something hit me today. My son applied for some local scholarships where I thought he had a sporting chance. Recipients are being announced and I see that the winners in two cases were valedictorians at their respective high schools. In both cases, applicants were graded on several criteria which included academic achievement. GPA, ACT/SAT, and class rank were requested. Perhaps my charming and brilliant son ;) could not compete or maybe he was a close second. I don't know. Colleges do not seem to be concerned about class rank. Do local philanthropic organizations still consider it to be important?
  12. We have all heard the old saw that thousands or millions of dollars in scholarship moneys go unclaimed each year. True? You got me. I figured this is a good time to discuss what I'll call Plan B. We have seen a recurring theme in recent threads: higher EFCs than parents have anticipated so that the gap between merit aid/financial aid offered and the total bill for tuition/room and board is more than expected. So let's talk about scholarships outside of those offered by the schools to which our kids are applying. The obvious scholarships are those offered by employers, professional organizations to which parents belong, and some churches. My son has applied for a 4-H scholarship--maybe other organizations to which our children belong have scholarships? Our local utilities have scholarships. One requires an essay; the other is based primarily on financial need. Some of the local service organizations provide scholarships, as does a large state credit union, but these seem to be for students at the public schools. Read the fine print, folks. There are many corporate scholarships from Coca Cola to Toyota. Corporate scholarships are not necessarily for employees' children. Some corporate scholarships are handled through National Merit. One thing that I noticed only quite recently when I was perusing scholarship lists is that some scholarship applications are due in the fall when our students are in the throws of applying to colleges. How much more can we put on their plates? Any insight on corporate scholarship opportunities might be appreciated by parents of 10th and 11th graders. Rotary (the service organization) traditionally funds study opportunities abroad. This is one to keep in mind for the future. One other thing that I have noted about local scholarships: often the amounts are small ($500) with disproportionate amounts of work involved in the application. No wonder some agencies have few if any applicants! I wonder if some of these organizations realize that, while few students would turn down $500, given the limited amounts of time many have, it is wiser to go after scholarships with larger payouts or fewer hoops. Any one else want to chime in? Jane
  13. First of all I want to personally thank SWB and JW for taking the time to write WTM. I had already been homeschooling for several years when I read it. My oldest two did not really reap the benefits from the shift in my homeschooling paradigm, but the oldest of my younger four is now a high school senior. She was in the grammar stage when I began making changes in the tone and intensity of my educational plan. We were never able to implement everything that I wanted to. Latin fell away because I was overwhelmed. We never really made it very far in logic. WTM made the gaps in my education even more obvious than they already were. But I did not let this discourage me and I soldiered on and we did the best we could do to live out the ideals in WTM. These forums, esp the high school board and the curriculum board, were a huge help to me; a very real and tangible support in keeping the rigor and keeping it real. This afternoon Sarah received a personal phone call from the director of the honors program at the college she has chosen. She was accepted into the University Scholars program, an elite group that only accepts 15 freshmen per year. We know from the competition weekend that she was on the low end of competitors as far as ACT and GPA, just a little higher than what it took to be invited to compete. It was her ability to hold her own in group discussions on diverse topics, to stand up to the interview process, to keep it together during the timed essays. The competitors were watched every minute of the competition weekend to see if they would be a good fit for the program. I knew she would be a good fit and now her chosen college has seen her for what she is; a bright, well read, well rounded, thoughtful young woman who knows who she is, what she stands for and how to defend that stance. Thank you Susan. Thank you Jessie. The time you invested in pouring yourselves out into the pages of WTM is a large part of the reason that we are where we are today. Thank you for the roadmap.
  14. When I wrote my letter recommending Sarah for the program I attached a scope and sequence of her high school years detailing her chronological study of history intertwined with her literature. I also gave credit to WTM in my letter. Well, Sarah just now told me that when the director of the honors program called her, and after she stopped screaming in his ear, he mentioned how excited he was to see a homeschooler get in because not many do. AND he said that Sarah's performance made him feel even better about the decisions that he and his wife are making for their children because they base their childrens home education on......drum roll please......WTM!!! How about that?
